Would anyone know how to locate birth or baptism records for Ulster County for 1827-1830 other than guessing at a church affiliation and looking for records that way?

Specifically, I'm trying to find the birth of a Sidney W. Wood who was b. abt. 1829 in Kingston, Ulster County, NY and the child of Isreal Wood and Julia Watkins. I have tons of information on this family after they moved to Galen, Wayne County, NY in the 1830's but would like to find Sidney's actual birth or baptism record.

Thanks for your help, Petey

When visiting in Ulster County and doing research I was told that members of the SAME family used both spellings of MENTZ and MANCE. They lived on a mountain and one member camer down on one side of the mountain, another member came down on the other side of the mountain and each used a different spelling. Of course, way back then many people could not read or write so census takers did the best they could with the pronounciation provided to them. This could have had a lot to do with the different spellings.

When I first started my research I used the spelling of my Mother's family: MANCE. No success until I found another researcher who provided the spelling of MENTZ and then I was successfull in tracing the family.

Rhoda Moree
ARMOREE@aol.com

Well, looks like we're cousins!
My line is Christopher/John/Jacob/Joseph/Joseph Smith (known just as Smith)/George/Robert/Willard/Jane (my mom).

I still live in Ulster County and have been to the old Manceville cemetery, or at least what was left of it in the early 1990's. Mostly hand carved slate stones. Christoffel had a wooden cross which I think has since disappeared.

Timmerman or Simmerman in Wawarsing/Rochester area, late 1700s to early 1800s?

I have found a few bits of information on a Henry and Nicholas Timmerman ( often spelled Simmerman) in Rochester Township, Ulster County. They were both signers of the Articles of Association and there are two records of births to Nicholas Timmerman and Margaret Sax in the Wawarsing Reformed Dutch church records, Jacob, b 20 Oct 1771, bap 8 Nov 1771, and Petrus, bap 14 Aug 1774. The Wawarsing church also has a birth of John Timmerman, bap 9 Mar 1777, father, Henry Timmerman, mother Elizabeth Schultz. And another Wawarsing church record has the birth of Catrina Timmerman, b 27 Dec 1801, father, Hendrick Timmerman, mother Elizabeth Kettle. A Henrick Timmerman (Ancestry.com has Simmerman) can be found in the 1800 Rochester Township census, apparently Nicholas and family had moved to Greene Co. by then. Both spellings, Simmerman and Timmerman, were used in the various records. Does anyone believe they are related to this family or have more information on them.

Thanks, Richard

Hi, yes, males tended to hand down their surname as well as their Y-DNA. So unless you had reason to believe the name had changed (adoption and the like) you would want to find a male descendant of the name you are trying to trace.

Thanks for the note about th Sullivan post What is now Sullivan County was in Ulster County until 1809. I'll try to make it sound more relevant.

Richard

I suppose this means that the name I'm trying to trace in Ulster County, FRANTZ, would have to be the name of the male donor? I only have a vague notion of how the various DNA tests work.

By the way, your duplicate message to the Sullivan board was deleted. I'm guessing because it was off topic - too bad as my FRANTZ relatives spanned the border of Ulster & Sullivan Counties in the little settlement of Frantzdale, now known as Spring Glen. Sullivan was subdivided from Ulster Co in 1809; before that, it was all Ulster Co.

All of it is true and so much more I never saw Paul again in all my 70 years. I heard tell of his fathers death in NYC also his mothers. We all had very little contact with them. My family and Pauls family are the only descendents of the six Bishop brothers. Paul and Tina and My and my 3 siblings. June Bishop is deceased many years ago.Send me your address and I will mail you some photos.Apriljacki2@aol.com

Not personally interested in this person, but am sharing info on him as he turns up attesting to a marriage that needed to be documented for a Civil War pension file of the survivors of Joshua J. Hopkins of Greenwich, Ohio. M. F. Liebenau officiated at the marriage in Lloyd, Ulster County, as Pastor of the Lloyd Presbyterian Church on 15 Sept 1850. His affadavit is dated 9 Aug 1878 and he gives his address as Creek Locks, Ulster Co., NY.

85 Wurts St was the rectory for what is now the AME Zionist Church, across the street at 72 Wurts. I believe it was formerly Baptist. There was also an Episcpal Church at 20 or 30-something Wurts --- it closed down about 6 or 7 years ago. The St Peter's Catholic Church at 93 Wurts is still running.

Hope that helps!

I don't think you can rule out that Wilhelmus wasn't the one baptized in 1761. I'm no expert, but I think infants were usually baptized soon after birth, but not always.

Also, the 1754 DoB may be wrong. If illiterate, would he have known exactly his DoB or exact age? My 1890s Germans were supposedly literate and got these kinds of details wrong all the time.

On the other hand, Wilhelmus was NOT an uncommon name.

If only we could use a crystal ball to see into the past!

Does anyone know if it's possible that these people are related to Joseph FRANTZ?

He was b ~ 8 May 1779 (don't know where, don't know his parents), married Ruth TRAP/P at the RDC Shawangunk, T/Shawangunk, Ulster Co, 11 Feb 1800, d 2 Dec 1856 & buried in the Old Ellenville Cemetery with Ruth.

He lived in the current Spring Glen, (staddles the T/Mamakating & T/Wawarsing), (straddles Sullivan & Ulster Counties), NY - called Frantzdale by at least 1838 through 1850-ish.

This FRANTZ line apparently doesn't come from PA according to the rootsweb FRANTZ mailing list members. Is it possible the thread family and mine descend from Johannes FRANCK / FRANTZ and wife Magdalena _?_, wid/o Ludwig STREIT (married 10 Jul 1711 at West Camp in Ulster Co)? If so, how do I connect the gaps?

Johannes and Magdalena were Palatines arriving ~ 1710. [see 'The Palatine Families of New York', vol 1, page 244] Just a supposition, no info leading back that far. I believe that FRANZ is German for France, the country. The Palatine and Alsace-Lorraine were areas that passed back and forth between Germany and France during various wars.

Alternate spellings for my family line include:

FRANTS
FRANZ
FRANS
FRANCE
FRANSE
FRANCK
FRANCIS
and my favorites:
FRANCI
FRANYSYE

There certainly could have been different immigrant families coming to the Hudson Valley with some of these names, but I suspect that many are related after trying to track the various western Ulster County members.

Thanks for your time.

My impression was that you ruling him out on the basis of his baptismal date alone.

Jacobus = Jacob. The Dominies back then didn't enter records in their English equivalents.

One last thing, although I'm sure you're correct regarding the headstones, the Poucher books aren't immune from mistakes - errors and omissions crop up. And even if Poucher is correct, there are many instances where the headstone is wrong, illegible, or missing. It's always best to find other sources to back up the info, if possible.

We should both got to bed; it's getting late!

FAIRCHILD researchers Rochester, Ulster, NY

I am looking for people researching the family name FAIRCHILD in and around Rochester, Ulster, NY. On the 1800 Federal Census there are a number of FAIRCHILD people. Listed are Stephen born probably abt 1775 ... Oliver over the age of 45 years, Levi between 26 and 44 years old, Isaac also between the ages of 26 and 44 years old.

Also listed on this same page is a Abraham GILLETT who may be the same Abraham GILLETT [1745-1808] that married a Betty FAIRCHILD [1763-1845] on 27 JUN 1784.

I am looking for information [such as any records of marriages, land, taxes, burials, bible, etc.] to prove this is the "correct" Abraham GILLETT and that his wife, Betty, was related to one or more of these FAIRCHILD families.

Any help is deeply appreciated.

Dear Paintmaryhill,

The birth or baptismal record for your Wilhelmus France does not appear in the records that are available to me.

He may be the son of Jacobus France and Catharina Freet, who appeared as witnesses at the baptism of Jacobus France, the (first) son of Wilhelmus France and Annatje Brink at the Katsbaan Church in Saugerties, Ulster, NY:

Jacobus #1399; Bapt. Date: 15 May 1785; Parents: Wilhelmus France, Annatie Brink; Sponsors: Jacobus France, Catharina Freet
Source:	Katsbaan Church Records

Since he was age 29 at marriage (and therefore certainly born in 1754), the record that "Saare" suggested would not be correct, for that Wilhelmus Franz was baptized in 1761.

It is possible that your Wilhelmus France was a Palatine, so you may want to access the book "The Palatine Families of New York. A Study of the German Immigrants Who Arrived in Colonial New York in 1710" published in 1985 by Henry Z. Jones. He also published "More Palatine Families" and "Even More Palatine Families" (a 3 volume work) which is even more complete.

Annatjen (Hannah) Brink was also baptized at Katsbaan:

Annatien #584; Bapt. Date: Jun 1765; Parents: Cornelis Brinck, Annatien Winnen; Sponsors: Petrus Brinck, Annatien Brinck
Source:	Katsbaan Church Records

Best regards,
Pam Sears
Excuse me, but yes you certainly can rule out the baptismal record of 6 November 1761.

1) The 1761 baptismal record was for Wilhelmus, the son of Jacob Frantz and his wife Catharina (surname not given).

Wilhelmus #2307; Birth Date: 6 Nov 1761; Bapt. Date: 1762 / 1st ADVNT / [*]; Parents: Jacob Frans, Catharina; Sponsors: Wilhelmus Emmerich, Margaretha
Source:	Baptism Record of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Athens

Wilhelmus France and wife Annetje Brink named their eldest son Jacobus (not Jacob) and the witnesses at the baptism were Jacobus (not Jacob) France and Catharina Freet.

Jacobus #1399; Bapt. Date: 15 May 1785; Parents: Wilhelmus France, Annatie Brink; Sponsors: Jacobus France, Catharina Freet
Source:	Katsbaan Church Records

2) The gravestone records for Wilhelmus France and his wife Hannah (Annatje Brink) France also confirm his date of birth in 1754, as follows:

Poucher, J. Wilson, Old gravestones of Ulster County, New York : (1931,) p 248
Finger Burying Ground, copied by Byron J. Terwilliger, June 1925
#54. France, Wilhelmus, July 12, 1848, aged 93-9-26
#52. France, Hannah, May 5, 1852, aged 86-11-13

His age at death calculates out to a birth date of 16 September 1754.

Therefore, his memory was neither faulty when he married (at age 29) nor when he died (at age 93).

Best regards,
Pam Sears
Dear Dave,

The records of the Reformed Church of Shawangunk, as published, only begin in 1750. The church itself was built between 1751 and 1755 and the first formal congregation was assembled in 1753. See:

http://www.shawangunkreformed.org/aboutus.htm

I believe the Lena Decker you are asking about was baptized at Rochester (recorded at Kingston) and the record reads as follows:

[Hoes B#2729] 10 Jan 1720; Willem Dekker, Rachel Van Aaken, Lena, "Bp'd in Raysester," [Rochester], Ysaak Van Aaken, Leentjen Zuyland

Her brother Abraham was also baptized at Kingston:

[Hoes B#2957] 14 Jan 1722; Willem Dekker, Rachel Van Aaken; Abrhaham; Wit: Willem West, and his wife.

Dorothy Koenig was kind enough to post the following on John Andrew and his wife Lena [Decker] back in 2008:

Dorothy wrote:

On 12 July 1761 John and Lena Andrew were witnesses (godparents) at the baptism of little "John", the son of Thomas Andrew and Rachel Oostrander.

Two years earlier on 21 Nov 1759 in the same church John Andrew and Lena Decker were witnesses at the baptism of little "Moses", the son of Abraham Smeedes and Geertie Swart.

On pages 587 and 588 of the compiled "Ostrander, a genealogical record..." published in 1999, it says that the Thomas Andrew who married Rachel Ostrander was the son of John Andrew and Lena ____. Thomas Andrew and Rachel Ostrander were married in Shawangunk Church on 10 February 1760. Rachel's older brother, Jacobus Ostrander,
married Elizabeth Andrew, sister of Thomas.

The Ostrander book also says, "...Elizabeth Andrew came from a family noted for its Loyalist activities. Elizabeth's father, John Andrew, had been driven from his home in Half Moon by harassment from a pack of Super-Patriots who considered him a dangerous man. He lost his home and possessions and was age 72, but he managed to struggle through the wilderness for and entire year before reaching safe haven in Canada...Others of the Andrew surname who preferred British Canada to Revolutionary New York included Abraham, George, Joseph, Michael, and Robert Andrew."

Dorothy Koenig in an email to NYUlster dated 19 Sep 2008

Best regards,
Pam Sears
