Hello, Barbara ~

If your generous offer is still open, I have relatives who may be listed in this book.

My G2GF - Joseph R FRANTZ, born abt 1805 per census, probably Wawarsing, Ulster. Married Doritha/Dorothea/Dorothy _?_.

My G3GF? - Probably the father of the above: Joseph FRANTZ, born 1780-9 per census, probably in Ulster & possibly in Wawarsing.

QUESTIONs:

* Is there a record of Joseph R's birth or baptism?

* Is there a record of Joseph R's marriage & what is the woman's name?

* Are there any children of the couple listed?

* Is Joseph (the elder) listed as born in the area?

* Is Joseph (the elder) listed as married & what is the woman's name?

* If this couple is identified, are any children listed?

The name is frequently spelled: FRANTZ, FRANZ, FRANTS, FRANCE, and perhaps other similar-sounding ways.

Thank you so much. What can I do for you?

In my Ulster County History book it mentions this one page 257 - it lists all the Justice of Peace for the town Wawarsing and in 1839 it was Joseph R. France.

Justice of the Peace.
1839 Joseph R. France and Samuel Reynolds

Thank you for the information from February. Especially for going beyond your mandate to check other resources.

I looked for TRAP in the Censuses and to my surprize, there are very few. In NY: 2 families in Montgomery, NY and 1 T/Mamakating, Ulster: William (probably Ruth TRAP's daddy). I thought it might be a Dutch name, but it seems not to be. There were many TRIP/Ps, though.

So, I was wondering if the Shawangunk RDC book had any other TRAPs listed?

Thank you for your valuable time, Jay

By the way, http://labs.familysearch.org/ has the original images for NYS Censuses 1865 and 1892, though they're not searchable, but they ARE divided into counties, then townships. So, you have to look at each page until you find your target. I'm looking through Dutchess Co right now for a confusing Johnson family.

Regarding the 1865 NYS Census, there can be 2-8 pages listing info on a family depending on the questions asked:

* military service
* death that year
* manufacturers
* churches
* whether a farmer - the most pages, listing all the crops and livestock grown - a real mother-load of info on farmers

The images and citations are are downloadable and completely free.

Haven't gotten to the 1892 Census yet---can't wait!

Trap is generally germanic, Swiss, Austria, and Germany, some Amsterdam, Belgium (Belgie) and Holland.

Look for the name with appendages, like "Von Trapp", Van Trappen.(Holland) and even spelled with a D, Drap, Draper, Drop etc.

People don't move, borders move.

By the way, Joseph R France is Joseph R Frantz. FRANCE is one of the variations for this name.

Does your Johnson family have siblings Aaron and Elizabeth living in Shawangunk in 1850?

Hello, DarleenLegault ~

I know my G2GF' wedding date, wife, kids, occupation, where he lived, etc. But all I know of his past is that he's named John Johnson, born ~1809-10 per census, perhaps in Duchess County per NYS census.

I don't know who his parents are or if he even had siblings, so I can't answer your question.

I think that people traveled between Ulster & Duchess even the Hudson was a formidable boundary. As a matter of fact, Duchess used to be governed by Ulster County until there were enough residents to govern them selves.

Thanks for asking, though. Are Aaron and Elizabeth Johnson connected to Duchess Co?
