I'm in search for any infomation on a marriage for Mary Emma Murdoch to Edwin (Edmond) A. (Amos) Barnes on 11 March 1866. Their separtion or divorce happened around 1870.Edwin no longer appears on census or other records to my knowledge. Mary Emma's parents are Alexander Anderson Murdoch and Eliza Murdoch. I did find Alexander and Eliza on the First Presbytterian church rolls 1858. Edwin has been a brick wall for me for many years. I keep thinking theres got to be something somewhere.

Hi,
I have little on Sally Goodwin. She appears in the 1850 Dryden, 1855 Dryden, 1860 Harford, 1865 Harford, 1870 Dryden and 1875 Harford censuses, and the New York, Town Clerks' Registers (Harford) of Men Who Served in the Civil War, ca 1865–1867, as mother of Theodore F. Thomas. Her birth year is pretty consistent from the censuses, abt. 1801. From the 1865 NY Census, Sally is listed as born in Onondaga county, N.Y. That could mean she was from what is Onondaga county today (Syracuse), but I think it not likely. Cortland county was formed from Onondaga in 1808, and Harford, Cortland county is adjacent to Dryden, Tompkins county. There was a lot of new settlement in this part of upstate N.Y. around the turn of the century, so records can be scarce. I haven't found anything else up.

Interestingly, there is a Goodwin family in Dryden in the 1850 census headed by William, born abt. 1775 in New Jersey. Just a thought.

I don't know if you have this or not, but it may be helpful to you -

Goodrich, Geo. B., compiler. The Centenial History of the Town of Dryden. 1797-1897 (Dryden, New York: The Dryden Herald Steam Printing House. 1898) 75, 77, 85-86, 89-90.

It has a little information for Joseph, but quite a bit of information for his brother Michael's family and emigration from N.J. I have a copy, but it can be found online.

Happy hunting.

Hi,

I appreciate your response and candidness,if it isnt there it isnt there.I also have family that claims descendency from Michael and Sally Goodwin Thomas.Michael is the son of Joseph if you are not aware, many believe Michael to be the son of Michael born 1769 however I would point out taht early census suggests not also the 1850 census denotes a Michael Thomas born circa 1811 and also denotes him as JR,Michael 1769 was probably married at least twice, secondly to a Sarah Howe in Sussex NJ 1809.Joseph was wed to Hopsey(?sp)Watkins in 1796 at Sussex NJ. It would have been very helpful had the grave been there as a close by county in NJ lends a birth for a Joseph Thomas in 1765 though none for Michael this is explicity from online sources so the birth may be in physical records but it would be nice for the cross reference if both were available.Have you any theory as to Sally Goodwins origins?

Hi,
I found your posting today and wanted to let you know that I'm pretty sure there is no gravestone in Green Hills Cemetery for Joseph and Hopa (Hapsey, etc.) Thomas. It's not a small cemetery, but in 1990 and 1991 I searched the entire cemetery very carefully. At that time even most of the marble stones were legible. I found many other relatives, including many members of the Thomas family (I am a descendant of Samantha dau. of Michael and Sally Goodwin Thomas). I did not find any stone for Joseph and Hopa. I did find his brother Michael's stone -

Michael Thomas	d – 4/26/1858	age 90y
inscript. – “In the 91st Year of his age”.

According to the Green Hills Cemetery records, Joseph and Hopa were buried in 1-42 and Michael was buried in 1-44, so they should have been near each other. It's just not there.

Thanks for your message and offer of assistance. I hadn't realized you were in Newfield. I might just take you up on your offer sometime. I'm from Ithaca and had paternal relatives with links to Danby, Caroline,Enfield, etc. I know where they're buried, but I've never visited their graves, unless as a child. Wishing you the best of luck in your research.

p.s. I'd tried the Find A Grave website, which is great resource, but nothing there either. Will check with the local libraries, History Center, etc. once again (it's been a few years), I'd contacted the local town historian who is also a Chaffee, and then finally, I've contacted some people in the area with the surname of McDaniels just to see if they might have a line on Lucy & Seth. I'm hoping somewhere/somehow there might be a clue.

Thanks, once again.

Thanks for your ideas. I do live in Newfield, and have actually visited all the graveyards known to Newfield, and surrounding towns. Though the Chaffee Genealogy by William H. Chaffee, pub. 1909 says both Seth Chaffee & Lucy (McDaniels)Chaffee ,died and were buried in Newfield, NY, I just can't verify where. I've also checked obits from the papers available during that era. It may be that they didn't have an engraved stone, as the finances of those times weren't easy.
Though I've come from the Chaffee side in research, I thought that researching Lucy's family history from her side might give me more clues than the Chaffee line has.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my query. If you have any questions for your family from this area, let me know.
Will still keep on looking. Thanks.
Have you tried looking on the Find-a-Grave.com website? Also, I just looked at the U.S. Board of Geographic Names website at http"//geonames.usgs.gov/ and found some other populated area maps listed for Newfield, such as West Danby and Alpine. A couple of cemeteries mentioned were the Old Newfield Village Cemetery and the West Danby Methodist Cemetery. You also might want to check out Schuyler County as Alpine and Mecklenburg are no longer in Tompkins County but in Schuyler County. The USBGN site lists more than 30 cemeteries in Schuyler County. I know there is/was a small cemetery in the Alpine area as I had relatives who used to live across the road from it and I used to play over there. I revisited it years later and it had been all cleaned up and restored. If it has a name, I don't know it, but it should be on that list. USBGN gives coordinates for each feature. Do you have a Newfield map? That should give you an idea of nearby communities. Dates would probably help too, especially with Find-a-Grave.

I hope some the above helps.

Saw Jennifer's old post on Seth Chaffee/Lucy McDaniels Chaffee. My mom's a Chaffee, and am tracing back the Chaffee line. In researching Seth/Lucy, I can't find record of where Seth & Lucy are buried in Newfield, NY. Any ideas? Everything written speaks of Newfield as their burial place, but can't find a stone for them anywhere in that town.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have been searching for nearly a year for the history of my 3X Great Grandfather born in 1834 in Tompkins Couty/Township. I cannot find any history of him prior to the 1850 census. His obituary notes Tompkins County/Township as his birth place.

The 1850 census has him living with the Dunning Family as a farm hand in the County of Livingston New York.

His name is Nathan Shadrach Dennis. His obit also reads that he has 1 sister and 1 1/2 brother. I have unconfirmed information that his father died at an early age (Father -born 1812 died 1850????)

Any help or suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.
I am looking for information on Ruth Smith, the wife of J.C. Cooper. They lived in Dryden in the 1800s. Their daughter Clarissa married Caleb Tichenor, the younger brother of Isaac. The little family information that still exists says that Ruth's family might have come from Scipio. There are a few women, possibly widows, by the last name of Smith, living near her in the mid to late 1800s. I would appreciate any information you might have on her or her parents. Thank you!

I have recently learned that my third great grandmother's death records lists her place of birth as Dryden, New York. Her name was Phebe McFall and she was born about 1813.

Previously I believed she was from Livingston County. She married a Lewis Luce (also from New York). They lived for some time in Mercer County, Pennsylvania before moving to Huron County, Ohio.

Does anyone have a line with Luce and/or McFall originating from Dryden?

Thanks for the help.

John White

Hi Joe,
I noticed your Cook family moved to the Deerfield area of Michigan (from another thread about Philo). Do you have any info on a William Cook? My ggg grandmother was Elizabeth "Libbie" R. Cook and was born in 1840 in New York. Her father, I believe was William, given that this William (and a possible brother Henry, b. 1852) was living with her and her husband George W. Ennis in Michigan in 1870. According to that census, William Cook was born about 1808 in New Jersey. They lived in Ida, MI but Libbie & her family moved to Deerfield by 1880 (where she died in 1881).

Thanks!
Mike

I am looking for the Parents of Frank W. Reilly. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1883. I have NOT been able to find his parents. The first record I find of him is 1900 Census and he was a boarder. I wonder if Michael was his father and he was a boarder because his parents moved away. In one of the censuses it says his parents were born in PA. I am at a loss. I saw his death record when I was visiting Wilkes-Barre recently. It didn't mention his parents. Wish I could help. Please let me know if you think this may be his father. Thanks ! Lisa Reilly Thorpe
