Regarding Tompkins Co., New York, I am searching for further information on JAMES GIBBS and GEORGE GIBBS, the son of JAMES GIBBS.
Per oral tradtion, JAMES GIBBS came to America (likely from Dalkeith, Scotland) shortly after the arrival of two brothers (names not known). [It is presumed that he may have settled near his brothers and that they, therefore, lived in the vicinity of Ithaca, NY.] JAMES GIBBS likely came to America between 1790 and 1820. He settled in the vicinity of Ithaca, NY. Per oral tradition, he had the following children: Thomas, John (died in Weedsport, NY), George (more below), J. Liza (married Hilson), Charlotte (married Smith), and Jane (married Bowers).
I have found a will (Liber C:63) for a James Gibbs (died 1833, age 77), with five of six children matching and wife listed as Jennet Anderson Gibbs.
GEORGE GIBBS, son of JAMES GIBBS, came to America with his father's family at the age of 19. He may have been named GEORGE WILLIAM or WILLIAM GEORGE Gibbs. He married PRICELLA DAVIDSON, daughter of ARCHIBALD DAVIDSON, who also had four sons: Albert, James, Joseph, and Archibald Davidson. George and Pricella Davidson Gibbs lived in Ithaca, NY, and had two known children: Jane (married Wilbur F. Hamilton) and Wesley Davidson Gibbs (more below). George Gibbs married a second time to Electra Jarvis; they had one daughter: Etta Gibbs (married Albert Winner).
WESLEY DAVIDSON GIBBS was born on July 13, 1842, in Ithaca, NY. He married NETTIE LEARN (raised by Struble) and moved to California in late 1870s. Wesley and Nettie Learn Gibbs are my great great grandparents.
