See if the towns have your grandfather's death on record. It may list the father's name. The towns are really small and I have found the clerks to be very helpful if you give them time to look things up. Also, if you can get to Albany, you can look up the date of his death and then order the record.

I haven't been there in quite some time, but it is very small. I found some records there, like marriage certificates. Remember, the Sullivan County Courthouse burnt in the 1850s, so most of the records prior to that are gone unless the towns kept records.

Sarah Moira Bowers was the half sister of my great grandfather, Alfred Bowers. She was born in 1848 in Sullivan County and married William Cristle. I don't know what happened to him. They had children, Henry, Louis, Rose May, and Emma Jane. Later Sarah married James McCulley and moved to Grand Traverse County, Michigan. If anyone believes this information is wrong, please let me know. Does anyone know what became of William Cristle. I think he was a businessman, and Sarah spent some time living in Boston.

I am looking for the best resources for research for Sullivan County in the 1825-1840 time frame, outside of the US census. Any ideas?

I am searching for the Robert and Rachel Coventry family who I think were in Liberty at this time. They moved there from Columbia County sometime before 1830, as Robert Coventry was found in Liberty in the 1830 census. But I'm not 100% certain it's my Robert and Rachel. I believe they had at least 2 children in Liberty, but that they moved out before 1840.

Thanks,
Janell

One odd thing - I am finding a few Probate notices for 'Cornelia Terwilliger' - died March 8, 1936.

Cornelia Terwilliger of 145 Villa Avenue, Yonkers; died March 8 at (G)oshen (first letter cut off).

The executrix is a niece - Marjory Tice. Monies are left to nieces/nephews John, Arthur, Grant Terwilliger, Edna De Gomvo and Jessie Harris.

NOWHERE are the children of John and Cornelia Romer mentioned - not even grandchildren (if any).

Could this be an entirely different Cornelia Terwilliger than the one that married John Romer?

The probate notices were all found on fultonhistory.com using the search phrase: cornelia terwilliger.

Hmmm?
I found this on Fultonhistory.com using 'john o romer' as the search phrase.

Republican Watchman - Monticello, NY - October 5, 1895.

The date itself is not on the top of the newspaper page but in checking four pages before - October 5 1895 was the date of the Death Notice on page 4. The paper was printed on Friday and the notice states Monday *so* counting back he could have died on Monday September 30, 1895.

The image is attached - here is the text which shows the children you have listed. Chauncey is NOT listed as a survivor (Neither is wife Cornelia).

----------------

OBITUARY,
John O. Romer died of heart disease,
Monday at the residence of his daughter,
Mrs. Charles S. Miller, at Bloomingburgh.
His age was sixty-one
years and seventeen days. Mr. Rom-
er was born in the town of Thompson,
Sullivan county. He resided tn Burlingham
until twenty-four years ago,
when he removed to Bloomingburgh.
For the past two years he has made,
his home with his son. Mr. Frank T.
Romer, of Mlddletown. Mr. Romer
is survived by three children, Mary
E., wife of Charles S.
I am looking for the ancestry of John Orrent Romer of Mamakating, Sullivan Co, NY who married Cornelia, dau of Ira Terwilliger and Maria Tice. Cornelia's age is rather variable in the census records.

In 1850 he was 16 and living with Jucreose and Mary L. Bennet and family as a laborer

I do not find him in the 1860 census and have tried a bunch of spellings.

In 1870 he is 36 in Mamakating, a farmer. Wife is Cornelia, age 42. Children: Mary E (13), Chauncey (10), George V. (8), and Francis T (3)

In 1880 he is 44 in Mamakating. Wife is Cornelia, age 48. Children: Chauncy, George V and Frank

In 1900 I don't find him. However, Cornelia Terwilliger, age 70, is living alone, widowed and next door to Peter Terwilliger. In other census records Peter is living next door to Silas Terwilliger. I can't connect the Terwilligers.

I am interested in both the Romers' and Terwilligers' ancestry and/or familial connections.

The book is called Some Barnum Histroy. Book has real family photos pasted inside the book of the Barnum's as well as a family history to include P.T. Barnum their cousin. Hand drawn maps of their home and property in Bridgeville to include family members homes and where they were located on the map. I assume that the Barnum name in Bridgeville is a big name. I found this book in an estate sale in Pasadena, California.

Does anyone know where I can find a listing of the burials in this cemetery? I thought I found one online last year but can't find it now. Looking for Knapps, Browns, Seeley and related families that might be buried there but not necessarily on Findagrave yet. Thanks!

Hi,
I believe I can provide a little info for you. B. Protas was actually Benjamin, my paternal grandfather Julius' eldest brother. I never met him, but he did indeed own the Brookside Hotel back in the day. I actually discovered your question while looking for more info on the Brookside Hotel. I am not sure if it's the same one that currently exists.
I hope this helps at least a little.
Best,
Jon Protas

Hearst born 1851 Sullivan County

I have been researching Michael James Hearst my grgrgrandfather. I recently found his obituary from 1921 San Francisco. In this obit I learned that he was born in Sullivan County, New York. I never knew where he was born in NY and hoped that this would help me learn more about him. Any suggestions on how I can find more about this man? He moved to CA in the mid 1880's but I find no trace of him before that time. He married Catherine Fitch about 1878 probably in NY and their first son William was born in NY in 1880.

William Henry Marshall & Prudy Ann Ingraham

I have reached a dead end with this branch of my family tree. William (1828-aft 1895) and Prudence (1833-bef 1895) were written about in the Delaware County Biographical Review for Thomas White: "White married Melissa, dauther of Willam and Prudy A (Ingraham) Marshall, who was born March 12, 1849. Mr and Mrs Marshall occupied a farm in Rockland, and were the parents of six children - Melissa, James, Ruth, Frank, Ella and Henry. Mr Marshall is still living, a resident of Meredith; but his wife has passed away." I've also found census records in 1850 and 1860 for Rockland that seem to match up but can't find any information that makes a connection to his parents. Please reply if you have any information to share!

My great X 2 Grandfather was James McGinn. He moved to Barryville/Pond Eddy from Kingston about 1870. For a time he took over running the hotel his In laws - Morris and Catharine Markley ran after their deaths (hers 1873).

James died 1 July 1889 when my great Grandfather Bernard was almost 3 years old. Recently while looking up some newspapers online at Fultonhistory, a copy of a page of the Republican Watchman popped up. It was dated 19 Apr 1889, and said James left Barryville the week prior to find a better location and got a job at Long Eddy in the blue stone business. He was going to move his family as soon as he found a place.

I then had a page pop up dated 12 July 1889, also teh Republican Watchman and under "A Card of Thanks" was a blurb where My Great X2 Grandmother was thanking the people of Barryville for 'assistance rendered and kindness shown by them in her sad bereavment".

No matter what I tried, I couldn't access the paper from the week before.

Does anyone have access to the 5 July Issue of the Republican Watchman? I am sure there would be at the least an obituary writeup for my Great Grandfather in that issue. I would be happy to cover costs of photocopies, etc.

Joe,

Thank you for posting! I'm really glad to hear it's been cut. When I went a few weeks ago the grass was nearly up to my waist and I couldn't find any of the stones I was looking for. I was looking for my ggg grandfather's stone, William Kelly. He's listed in the Barber transcription from 1930, but I'm thinking his stone may have fallen. Another researcher posted a photo of his daughter's stone (Arminda Kelly) which has fallen and he was buried next to her. Hopefully I'll have a chance to take another look in the coming weeks.

Thanks again! Frank

Lois,
I currently live in Fremont Center. As the previous poster told you, the church has changed hands, and not only the maintenance of the cemetery grounds but also that of the records has been hit and miss. I spoke to the head of the small local historical society who said he would look into for me, and I'll get back to you. The organization and Town itself is low-tech, to put it gently, and there is no email or website to share with you, other than one for town board business, with a page of town history that I doubt would be of any use to you.

Regards,
Dorothy Hartz

Looking for the family of my great-great-grandmother Hannah Catherine(?) Jenkins who married Gilbert Townsend Sprague about 1842 in Delhi, Delaware County, New York. The Sprague family had farmed in Sullivan County before moving to Delaware County. Hannah was born about 1825, perhaps in Delaware County, and died on or about 30 May 1869 in Cornell, Livingston County, Illinois. Her father's name may have been Llewelyn Jenkins.
Probably not the physical address of the cemetery, but of those who run it:

Fremont Center Cemetery Association
8562 County Rt. 46
Arkport, NY 14807

The list I have is showing it to be in Steuben County.

I am looking for a James Sullivan who was married to Annie Meura(sp?). They had two children: James and Winifred. I am hoping to find birth, marriage, and death records. Also who his parents were. I don't have any information other than who his immediate family is.

I'm trying to locate the Fremont Center Cemetery, to see if I can reach someone there to get a burial record for Melancthon Smith Brown, who died between 1900 and 1910. Any help would be much appreciated.

Lois Johnson

The grass had still not been cut when I was there 2 weeks ago. I'm not sure if burial records exist; you might try contacting Loucks funeral home in Ellenville or the Kenny-Van Inwegen funeral home in Wurtsboro. Gertrude Barber did a survey of the cemetery in 1930 and published the transcriptions of most of the stones that were standing at that time. I will gladly do lookups if you have a pre-1930 burial. I have been photographing stones in parts of the older section of the cemetery (at least I was until the grass got so high). What gravestone(s) are you looking for?
Vivian
