Yes, it was a school for children who were orphans, or who were taken away from families who couldn't care for them due to poverty or other family issues. Some children came from abusive or alcoholic parents, some were given up due to extreme poverty (depression times were rough!). It was supposed to be temporary, but in reality, few children were allowed to leave until they turned 18yo. My uncles joined the military in order to leave the school early. My mom stayed until 18 yo. I think she mentioned that there was a male principal in charge during much of her stay, but she could have meant the house parent perhaps. She's had a stroke in 2013 so is unable to process well and speak well. I have connected with other students who attended this school and I can email their contacts to you or vice versa. It was an excellent concept for a school and much better than being in foster care in many ways, but it's always hard when children are separated from their parents. I think my mother never got over the separation well.
