Hi,
I'm the 12th Great Grandson of David desMarets and Marie Sohier. There are relatives in all 50 states, France, Canada, England, Holland and probably tons of other countries. Demaray is only one of the many variations of the original name. There were many reasons for the changes, the biggest was to meld the family into the local population for protection. The others were for ease of pronouncing it and geographical accent adeptation.
So, check out
www.demarests.com for a history and a list of the other variations...It also contains a listing by generations so you can actually see the migration of your particular branch of the family. Mine migrated North into the Mohawk Valley of New York in the late 1700's during the Revolution. Good luck.
