I checked the booklets from Ottilie Home and in 1937 Dorothy Vetter is listed as 18 years of age. I was only 7 years old then in the home and since there were two dormitories, one for young girls and one for those over puberty age, I did not know Dorothy. I was under the impression that 18 was the age that you were dismissed.

St Anthony's was a TB hospital. My mother and my aunt both worked there in the laundry. I visited often.
I'm not sure of the time but it could have been late 40s.

Southernrose, next time you go to the cemetery can you check and see if you can locate:
-Thomas Cavanagh
-Owen J Cavanagh (Thomas's brother he died in 1965) the two lived together in the 30s and 40s so I suspect that they are buried near each other...
Other family member who could be in the same area are:
-Helen Cavanagh Carden (his sister she died in 67) husband William Carden
-Elizabeth Cavanagh Neary (another sister she died around '65) huband Thomas Fred. Neary (he died around '56)

wow, what a site!!! Don't know if it's still active but if anyone has any knowledge of the Vetter siblings, it would be appreciated. My mom and her siblings (Dorothy, George, Eleanor and John) were there throughout the late 1920s through the 1930s. I made a short trip back there with my mom and aunt back in the 1960s I think. I remember the rolling hills, the dormitory. All four have passed on and like a lot of other people I'm trying to piece things together after the fact. Any info would be great.

Perhaps this may clarify misconceptions of NYC genealogists
and fees. You said you have five potential marriages. If you have counties, dates, and certificate numbers for each,
it would take a genealogist a *maximum* of 15-20 minutes to view all of them on marriage certificate microfilms at the NYC Municipal Archives. It may take less time if the first or second were "hits."

You've already eliminated the need for searching marriage indexes. Professional genealogists charge by research time, and most don't require you to order certificate copies through them.

Again, even genealogists hire genealogists to save time and acquire accurate results.

Thanks for the 2 replies.

Ah, nice catch. I see your confusion. I apoligize for this. I was working that morning with a cousin's wife on her Peter when I replied to S_KERR & mamalove12 & posted the wrong Peter surname in my reply. I've just corrected that.

Of the names mentioned in the Peter WARD posts, WARD is the one I'm working on & hoping to find a marriage for Peter WARD. Then surnames mentioned of the potential spouses won't be of interest unless one of those women turns out to be Peter's wife.

As for the suggestion to hire a genealogist I wish I had that kind of budget! The fees for the 5 films & all the gas to get back & forth up to the FHC are too rich for my budget so I definately don't have the funds for hiring a genealogist.

RI advantages/drawbacks - Well, for those of us here, being in the smallest state has some advantages but not always as with the media coverage of Superstorm Sandy.

NY & NJ got most of the publicity re: damage from Superstorm Sandy but many people don't realize that large areas of RI coastline got decimated, too.

Homes & businesses gone, fisheries damaged, historic buildings beyond repair & had to be demolished, on the coast & in the Bay beaches were serverly damaged or in some instances are now just a memory.

Even the historic Cliff Walk in Newport was severly damaged with sections now missing or damaged to the point of being impassable & unsafe.

The repairs are being held up by a selfish surfing association, Clean Ocean Access. The only way to get the heavy equipment & materials for repair in along the coastline there is to barge it in & to get it to shore via temporary causeways with stone protection/reinforcement need that need to be built. The surfing association is complaining because they fear after the causeways & stone are removed that somehow the shore/sea bottom will be changed & it'll ruin their waves.

Probably the one way in which RI was fortunate w/Sandy is that we had no loss of life.

BTW - I don't begrudge NY or NJ, the suffered terribly, too and some of my ancestry is in both places. The most deaths in NYC occured on Staten Island where one of my major branches goes back to Johannes de Decker in the 1600's. I just thought I'd get RI out there since, for the most part, the national news media ignored us & to a lesser extent, ignored Staten Island.

That said, the ports of New Bedford, Providence & Boston were also major immigration points for New England but with the exception of Boston records on line in Ancestry's databases, one has to search for those other records in person. I've never found an FHL film number for any of them.

I'm not sure if all of them are on film at the NARA in Waltham, MA or if some are also more locally housed.

I had one branch line I research enter through the "old" Ellis Island. Not the brick & masonary building one visits today but the original wooden Ellis Island which burnt in June 1897. And 2 other branch lines that came in through Boston. The Ellis group & one of the Boston group then proceeded by steamship to Providence but I've yet to start looking for those ship records.

When I decided to post this request & the others, it seemed as if it would be an easy matter with my suppling film #, marriage certificate #, names & date for a person or persons in the metro NYC area to do a look-up the next time they visited their particular NYC FHC but I guess not. Despite there being multiple FHCs in metro NYC, the large size of NYC seems to be more hinderance than help.

As much as I hate to tie-up LDS volunteers/resources on a fishing expedition hoping to find that one of these 5 potential marriages for Peter WARD that I posted here & on the NY Co & Kings Co boards turns out to be "the one", it's looking more & more like that's what I'll have to resort to.

Thanks S_KERR & mamalove12 but this is just one of 5 possibilities for a marriage for my Peter WARD.

If I was sure this is the marriage, I'd request the copy but I'm not sure.

I know from discussions in Yahoo genealogy groups I belong to that the LDS is really getting hit with requests for this service and my clogging the system with 5 requests hoping that one of them might turn out to be the right marriage will just exacerbate the problem & slow down someone else's receiving a document copy they'd requested. It'd be selfish of me to slam the LDS with a request for 5 different Peter WARD marriages on the off chance one of them turns out to be the correct one.

With 8 FHC's in NYC, one of which is in Queens, and knowing that the FHCs usually carry all the films that pertain to the area they serve, I'm hoping someone going to one of the FHC's can do this look-up so I can learn if this is the marriage I seek or not.

Fortunately for you, you reside in the smallest state in the union. The port of New York City received the most immigrants, including those passing through. Vital record
repositories are varied depending upon county, year,
and type...plus the various municipal boundaries changed over time, and the 1988 incoporation of five counties into
Greater NYC complicates researching.

BTW you mentioned two surnames you're researching. Is one
more significant than the other?

I recently read that the Queens County branch of FHC lacks machines to print images, and has a smaller collection than other branches.

Another option is to provide a genealogist with Peter HESLIN's five potential marriages so that they might view the each mcrofilm3ed certificate at the NYC Municipal Archives. Then, with determining facts such as bride's name, family addresses, or parental names, the correct
connection may be made to your family.
That's good to know. Do they do an inter NYC/FHC loan sort of thing for NYC films or must the patrons borrow from Salt Lake? It must get expensive for those using the Queens FHC if they have to borrow NYC films from UT.

All the FHCs I've visited are in non metro regions so perhaps it's more do-able for those centers to have all the films for their areas on hand.

Here in RI, the FHC is small but still carries all the RI films which is a couple of big file cabinets worth as well as a fair number of Italian, Irish, English, German, Dutch, Portuguese & other ethnic films and films from any number of other states that patrons have put on permanent loan. They have an impressive amount of print material, too - one whole wall of floor to ceiling book shelves worth.

About the only films they don't carry are French-Canadian ones but that's only because the American French Genealogical Society in Woonsocket has all that & much more Fre-Can materials so it would be a duplication w/in a relatively small geographic area for the FHC to also have it.

So, given the volume of films at my small FHC & even that it would be unmanagable for the Queens FHC to carry all the NYC films I still rather surprised to learn that the Queens FHC doesn't at least have the films that pertain to Queens on hand.

I guess I'd have it pretty good with my FHC if only more of my research were for here but at least my FHC has almost all of the films on permanent loan for the town in Italy where my paternal side comes from so that's something & usually one of the few reasons I ever make the trek up the other end of the state to go to the FHC.
Hello again,

You stated "FHCs usually carry all the films that pertain to the area they serve" I go to the FHC in Queens and they only have the films that are requested by patronage. It's a very small center - it would be impossible for them to store all the tapes for New York City.

I hope one of the other centers has the tape you are looking for

You are very welcome - if you have any problems finding things for Frank in the Fulton News site, then just give me a shout - I will be happy to send them to you.

So to find out how Effie is related to your family! Was she perhaps related to your G Grandmother's family?

Did your G Grandfather marry in the US?

Or maybe Effie's husband had German connections so Effie was related through marriage? Was Effie's mum married before to a relative of yours etc etc There are so many possiblities!! If you would like to post what you know of your Great Grandfather and mother's families, maybe we can all put our heads together and try to help you to find the connection?

I just received a letter from Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn stating that my great great grandfather Nicola Mangiere (also spelled Nicolo and Mangieri), who was interred at GW on June 9, 1915 was moved afterwards to Calvary in Queens. This is news to me!

My grandmother and other relatives tell me we had a family vault. If Nicola is at Calvary then this is where our vault might be located. I am interested to find out which members of the Mangiere family are there. The relatives would be Nicola Mangiere, Michelina Mangiere, Thomas Mangiere, Elvira Mangiere Viggiano and Donato Viggiano, Nicholas (Nicolino) Mangiere, Charles Mangiere...there are many more. And note the name might have been changed to Mangieri.

Does anyone know how helpful Calvary is without dates? I don't have exact dates of death for some of the relatives but I have names.

I'm wondering also if someone here who goes there from tiem to time, might be interested in taking photos of the graves if I can find them at Calvary?

Thanks!

When GW contacted me, they only told me that he was put in a receiving tomb on June 10, 1915 and then moved to Calvary. I am ordering copies of Nicola's and Thomas' death certificates in the hopes there will be some information that will help me :)

BTW I did put down the possible spellings. The last name was Mangiere but sometimes spelled Mangieri. Nicola was sometimes spelled Nicola and I am not sure if Thomas' name was Thomas Gaetano Mangiere (his mass card says Thomas G. Mangieri and my grandmother says his middle name was Gaetano), or it might have ben Gaetano Thomas Mangiere (there's one listed in the NY archives born 4 July 1890 and is consistent with my great grandfather's birthday listing in the 1900 census which was July 1890).

Rumor also has it from my grandma's sister that Thomas' REAL first name was Thaddeus and he hated it so much he changed it. (The 1900 census lists him 10 years old as Thomas. )

And you are correct in assuming they died in NYC. Thomas died in Columbus Hospital and Nicola died in Brooklyn. Ugo doesn't have any certificates that I know of so I have to order them!

Carol at Calvary Cemetery did a thorough check and just couldn't find them. :(

I hope the DC's tell me something :)

Hi Jo, thanks for the reply.

I called Calvary the day after I posted this. I talked to a nice lady named Carol. She looked up my great grandfather Thomas Mangiere, my great great grandfather Nicola/Nicolo Mangiere, and my great grand uncle Donato Viggiano and had no luck. I know that Nicolo died July 7, 1915,Thomas died June 1946 and Donato died in April 1972. They were all buried shortly thereafter within those months.

GW's letter tells me that Nicola/Nicolo was moved to Calvary and my grandmother's cousin Ugo told me the other day that his father (Donato) is buried at Calvary.

Our family has a vault so we are sure that where you find Nicola you will find the others. Carol's search of Calvary was four different cemeteries, and no luck. I don't know what to do.

I am sending away for Nicola's and Thomas' death certificates. Even though I only have a month and year for Thomas I am sure they will be able to find him.
You post is interesting. Calvary is and isn't helpful without a date of death. It sometimes depends on whom you speak with on the phone. The last time I called asking for a particular person, I was told they needed the month of death besides the year.

I just don't know if I can call Calvary back because if I get that lady again, I'll feel foolish because she won't think that I took her word for it.

I don't have a Mormon library near us nor can we get to NYC to get to the index. I'll just have to keep searching! If I find anything I will let you know :)

Jess

Nancy, As far as I can figure, Effie Burns lived at 3222 77th Street, Jackson Heights, Long Island, New York. That is the address my mother had in her telephone book probably around 1950 give or take. I was told Effie had a daughter named Marie. I was also told Effie is related to our family somehow. I did find census records for Effie in 1900, married to William Burns, 1910 with her children Marie and Frances, 1920 Manhattan with the family, 1930 living with son in law Frank Quigan, 1940 with Frances Quigan. So I believe I have found this particular Effie Burns. I also found cemetery records for her, William and Frances. I have been a busy researcher and have had much help also. But how we could be related is still a mystery. From what I see, Effie's family is from Ireland and England, our family from Germany/Poland. Perhaps James R Watson is the link, this I do not know. But I beieve I have found the correct Effie. My Dad told me she was rich and lived very well. Of course, this was compared to the farm my Dad grew up on in Michigan. I am hoping to get a copy of the marriage certificate for Effie and William and perhaps that will shed some light. Thanks for your reply and offer to help. Any help is deeply appreciated.

I did read some articles at the Fulton site, found Effie listed a few times. Its a great site.

As for Aunt Effie. My GGrandfather (August) married in Michigan to a woman(Ebert) who was from the same village in Germany. Both families came to America on the same boat. My GGGrandfather(Jacob/Joseph) died, Im assuming, in Germany because my GGGrandmother (Anna) remarried, a Reinke man in Germany. This Reinke family came from the same village in Germany also. The family names is Schmidt, Ebert, Reinke, Soucheski. I have found marriage record for Reinke and Anna. I have not researched the German records yet. But I have been told that GGranpa August came to American with two sisters. One went to Michigan with him and one stayed in New York. My GGgrandfather and his sister(Mary) married brother(John Ebert) and sister(Anna Ebert) of the above Ebert. I thought that perhaps the other sister was related to Aunt Effie. But it seems that is not the case. I plan on ordering some film from Family Search.org to see if I could find the missing sister's name, but have not had the time to do that. I have the name of the parish in Germany for birth records. I did find that family search does have those records on file. So it seems that a German/Polish person is somehow related to an English/Irish person. Go figure. We are having a family reunion this summer and I plan on talking to my uncles about Aunt Effie to see if they remember her. Seems she visited Michigan a time or two in the 1930-40's. The local Michigan paper had no mention of this visit, but had many other stories of my family.
I guess if genealogy was easy, everyone would be a pro. Thanks again for your help.
Effie's husband Burns, is listed as born NY, parents I need to check that, good point. GGgrandpa August called her Aunt Effie.
Time to quit today, I'm wore out looking.

Thanks for clearing that View All up for me. I wondered what that meant.

How do I order the Marriage Certificate from familysearch.org. I am familiar with that site, but do not know how or what to do, for I surely would.

Thank you so much for your time and help. One day I will find out where Aunt Effie fits in our tree.

WOW!!! That is all I can say. It will take me some time to digest all this wonderful information you all have graciously shared with me. Thank you so much.

I will check each and every one of those links.

Now the last question is why would my Great Grandfather tell my Dad that Effie was related. My GGrandfather was born in Germany in 1865, came to American in 1882, settled in Michigan. In 1946 my Dad was recouperating from wounds suffered at Iwo Jima in Philly and visited with Aunt Effie when she lived in Jackson Heights, New York. My Mom found her address from her old phone book listed Effie Burns, Jackson Heights, Long Island New York. More search to do for sure.

I do plan on ordering a copy of the marriage certificate I found in Kings County NY.

Again, thank you so much.

When I put the correct name in Google it came right up with a picture of that intersection and the building in the distance.

Thanks again. I've already contacted the three relatives in Florida who were born there and told them the correct name and the locally used "Nursing Home" name. Another mystery solved.

Mark

I'm thrilled I was able to help you break through that wall! I know how frustrating it can be.

My first response didn't get posted - I probably hit the wrong button. I wanted to tell you that the building was a wood-frame structure with a mansard-style roof. (I live less than 1/2 mile away from the site, and my dad was born there too.) The building was still standing in the late 1960s, when it was used as a nursing home. I don't remember exactly when it was torn down. The location is maybe 50-100 west of Little Neck Parkway, on the south side of Jericho Turnpike. A Kentucky Fried Chicken and the Floral Park Motel now stand on the site.
