In May 1868 Brooklyn's Bishop Loughlin asked Sisters of Charity from the Mount St. Vincent Institute, near Yonkers, NY to take charge of a hospital in Brooklyn. Over the years it moved from Clinton Street, to Dean Street, and finally to St. Mark's avenue and was known as St. Mary's Hospital. The original administrator was Sister Emiliana.
