Headhunting- yes the Brewster Losee family are my ancestors. I've been trying to find out who Joseph's father is. I think Joseph is buried there but not his parents. Perhaps his father is Daniel who came from Yorktown, but I'm not certain.
Interesting connection to Custer. I think there is a monument to William at Brewster even though he is buried at the battlefield in Montana. I live in Dutchess so I must go down there and see the cemetery!

I ran across the name Losee on tombstones at the Methodist Cemetery in Brewster. I took note of the name while walking by because I knew Losee served with Custer. Sorry but did not take note of the Losse names on the stone...I actually think it might have been a whole plot, with several people. I am going back to the cemetery. I'd be happy to take some photos and Email to you. Maybe they're your people. Debby

old post,I know. Josephine was the sister and William (of the LBH) were siblings of Isaac (1842), my great grandfather.

I have been unable to find any more about Joseph but Phoebe Ann was the daughter of Nathaniel(1788) and Charlotte Reynolds. Nathaniel's father was Isaac who married Abigail, maiden name unknown.

I know a little bit about William and his service with Custer.

Most of the records come from researching the Hensley family because there was not much about my ancestors and I found the Hensley connection. Christopher was married to Susan (or Susannah) Penrod in 1828. They had several children together, then they divorced in 1845, at which time he married Catherine. Some records show him marrying Catherine in 1840, but since children born to her from 1840-1845 carry the last name of Tompkins (including my great grandfather Clark) that tends to bear out the 1845 marriage. They had several children together, then Catherine died in 1850 He then married Erminda (no last name) and Huldah was their daughter. Then in 1859 He married Arminda Cook, and they moved to Mo. I suspect that Erminda and Arminda may be the same person and that he was married to Arminda after Catherine's death. However, the record I found show Erminda born in Illinois, and Arminda born in Ohio. I didn't research them any further. Hope this helps. Frank

The records I have show Catharine Tompkins (born in New York about 1816-extrapolated from 1850 census) md to Christopher Hensley 5 Nov. 1828. That would have made her 12 years old! So I'm trying to find real dates. I've not heard that she married Hensley as a widow or divorcee. Where did you get your information? Catharine and Christopher are the parents of my great great grandmother, Huldah Anna Hensley md. to Young Stothard.

I would still research the names given by anyone (without a source) and look for documentation to confirm that information. Where is the source of the parents from and how do you get a copy for my records. I always document any information before I go on in the event it is incorrect.

Dotti

Since it stats he is a native of Kents Creek I would go to the Court House there or write with the approx. or closest date that you found him living with his grandparents and request the Probate Dept. at the Court House to search for Guardianship Records for him. These papers would of gone through the Court. You might also contact the local Genelogical Society or Historical Society and see if they might have copies of Guardianship records available. A 3rd way would be to go to the LDS Family Search Catalog put in Kents Creek and check to see if they might have microfilm copies of Guardianship Recors for that area and if they do go to your closest LDS Family History Center (can also be looked up on their Site) and order a copy of the Microfilm for a low fee and they will call you when it arrives and you can go to the Center and view the film and look for his name. Good Luck

Thanks for the excellent suggestion - I have not looked into that. Currently, I have George's Civil War records, newspaper articles from Fulton.com and a copy of his death certificate. His military records unearthed Hannah J. His death certificate had nothing in the mother/father lines.

In truth, I'm not sure how to go about looking into guardianship. Would you mind giving me a couple of pointers in navigating this system?

Dotti

Dotti

Have you checked for Guardianship records on George. If they were appointed Guardianship and raised him the answer to your question might be answered. I had a similar brickwall and that is how I solved it.

Thank you so much for your reply and the link to George's obit. Yes, this is the same George. It was through these obituaries that I learned about his half-sister, Caroline McDowel. Other tidbits - A Civil War enlistment paper listed Hannah J. Williams as his mother. The 1850 US Census shows George (recorded as George Maney) living with Richard J. and Jane Williams in Kent. Hannah has been quite illusive, though. The only other place I have seen her name is in the newspaper article that ran back in the 70's detailing the "discovery" of the Williams Burial Grounds in Kent, listing her buried there.
As an adult, pension and census records show that George lived near and interacted with Dennis Williams Sr. and Jr., Levi and Miranda Williams, a number of Smalley's and Knapps.
Without knowing his mother's parents, though, I cannot connect the Williams dots.
I'm so stuck at Hannah !!
Dotti
Hi Laura,
I see it's been a while since you posted on the message boards - are you still a member of Ancestry? I am looking for Hannah Williams McDowell (1819-1864), mother of Caroline McDowell. (Caroline married John Peleg Williams.) Hannah is buried in the little Williams Burial Grounds in Kent Cliffs. The question is why. My supposition is that she is a daughter of Richard J. and Jane Williams and I would love to be able to prove it! Richard and Jane raised her first child, George Mooney.
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from you,
Dotti Williams
Los Altos, CA

Hi,
Am looking for information regarding my 3rd great-grandmother, Hannah J. Williams (1819-1864). What I know: She had a son, George (b 1843) with a man by the last name of Mooney (first name unknown). George was raised by Richard J. and Jane Williams in Kent Cliffs - perhaps they are his grandparents? Hannah married John McDowell abt 1850 and had a daughter, Caroline, who married John Peleg Williams. Hannah is buried in the Williams Burial Grounds in Kent Cliffs.
Has anyone come across Hannah in their research? Questioning why she is buried in the little Williams Cemetery - could she be a daughter of Richard and Jane; sister to Adolson?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks,
Dotti Williams
Los Altos, CA

Descendants of Philipse Family (through Ethel Goodridge)

I am doing research on prominent Colonial New York families. I am searching for descendants of Mrs. Frederick (or Frederic) Grosvenor Goodridge (b. Ethel May Iselin, daughter of John H. Iselin and Mary Philipse Gouverneur Iselin). Mrs. Goodridge died in 1937, age 64, having lived in NYC and Pomfret Center, CT. Her survivors included a son, Frederic Goodridge (of San Diego), and daughters Mrs. Thomas Barber (Ellen Grosvenor Goodridge) and Helen Iselin Goodridge (of Pomfret Center). I'm hoping that Mrs. Goodridge had (and passed along) some Philipse-Gouverneur family papers from colonial times. Any leads would be much appreciated. Thanks! Jim Merrell

Looking for information on the ancestry & descendants of Timothy:

TIMOTHY SHAW died 1779 in New Lotts, Brooklyn, Queens Co., Long Island, New York..

Notes for TIMOTHY SHAW:

1) Muster Rolls of New York Provincial Troops, 1755-1764, Collections of the New York Historical Society for the Year 1891, Edward F. De Lancey ..., New York: Printed MDCCCXCII. - pp. 276-277, MUSTER ROOLS OF NEW YORK PROVINCIAL TROOPS, 1760, MEN'S NAMES ... #66 - Timothy Shaw, Date of Inlistmt. - May 1st., Age - 45, Where born - Ireland, Trade - Labourer, Out of what Company of Militia - Campbell, Officer who enlisted - Capt. Schuyler ...

2) Alexander Fraser, Second Report of Archive For The Province Of Ontario, 1950, pp. 884-885. Proceed in Of Loyalist Commission, St. Johns, 1797, Vol. XVI, before Commissioner Pemberton, Claimants, MS 19. New Claim - February 23, 1787.

He (Timothy)lived in Dutchess Co. Joined the Brit. Govert. In New York. Had from the first declared in favr. Of the Brit. Govert. He was confined several times which obliged him to go within the lines for protection. His family were sent to him in 1777.

Had a farm in Dutchess Co., inherited it on his Father s death.

Produces Deed From in Philip Philips to Timothy Shaw, Father of Claimt., of his Right & Title to Improvements on Gregory farm forever. There is no date to this assignment but Claimt. Says it was 15 years ago.

Father was in Possession for 7 yrs. Before the war. His Father died on Long Island, 1779, without a will. It seems from Claimt's (his son, John) account that Gregory had a Lease, but Mr. Philips, the Landlord, turned out Gregory and then gave the improvements to Claimt's father.

His father made no will. Claimt. is his only son. Has a sister living in the States.

There appears by survey 186 acres.

His father had been a Loyalist and was confined on which he went within ye lines, where he died. Does not know who has the land. Says his father improved the place greatly after he got it. Valued it a 500L.

The stock was chiefly his father. Some part his own. It consisted of: -
4 horses, 15 cows, 2 pair of oxen, 8 fat cattle, 25 head cattle, 25 sheep, 14 hogs, corn in the barn, hay, farming utensils. Of these 1 horse, 8 cows, 7 young cattle, 14 sheep, 10 hogs, wheat belonged to Caimt. The rest belonged to Claimt. The rest belonged to his father. All this was taken away after he went away.

Alexr. Brown, Wits:

Knew Timothy Shaw, Father of Claimt. He was Loyal. Went within the Lines for Protection. Claimt. was also Loyal & went on that acct. within the Lines. The Father died at Long Island. claimant is his only son. He has a sister in the States.

Knew the Farm. Thinks it was given to Timothy Shaw about 1766. There was a mob by the Tenants against the Landlord, Mr. Philips. Timothy Shaw was one who assisted Philips for which & other services he gave him the farm. Witness understood that Philips gave the Gregories a Farm elsewhere, but they still made a claim and in 1766 they turned the old man out, but he got Possession again & then staid till he went within the Brit. Lines.

Is told the Gregories are not in Possessions. The farm was about 200 acres, chiefly improved. Knew the Stock. Heard of its being seized & sold. 30 or 40 head of cattles, 4 horses, 1 yoke of oxen, 13 sheep, 10 Hogs, Hay, Understood it was seized & sold by Commissioners of forfeiture. (Probably 1782, William S. Pelletreau in his book History of Putnam County s on page 282 mentions land seizures and then the selling of.)

4) William S. Pelletreau, History of Putnam County, New York, With Bibliographical Sketches Of Its Prominent Men (Philadephia: W.W. Preston, 1886, ISBN 0-89062-006-7), refers to Timothy Shaw: -

4.1) Timothy Shaw defends the land claims of the Philipse Family against the Nimham First Nations in an "Affidavit of Timothy Shaw, 1767". Timothy marked the legally prepared, sworn "Affidavit" with his mark: "X". This Shaw Affidavit will be referred to a number of times in land disputes prior to the American Revolution. It lists the early settlers, where the Nimham lived and when the first settlers arrived. Putnam County basically covered the area that was originally the Philipse Family Patent. (Pelletreau, pp. 77, 78, 79, 120 &121)

4.2) Timothy Shaw made his home at the north end of the lake which from him took the name of Shaws Pond which continued to bear his name till modern times, when it changed to Lake Gleneida. As in his affidavit made in 1767 he states that he was well acquainted with all the settlements that had been made in these parts within twenty five years, it is evident that he must have been here as early as 1742... (Pelletreau, p. 282)

4.3) In old burying ground on the Belden farm, at the southwest corner of Lake Gleneida, and where the slaves of the Belden family were buried in a small enclosure surrounding a single grave and a head stone recording the death of Deborah Shaw, who died May 5th., 1824, aged 84. She was a white woman who lived with several families. She requested to be buried in that place because, as she said, "my ancestors lie there." It is probable that she was the daughter of Timothy Shaw and that a family burying place was there in early times. (Pelletreau, p. 282)

Children of TIMOTHY SHAW were:

i. JOHN SHAW, b. Carmel, old Dutchess Co., N.Y.; d. Abt. April 1810, Wickham, Queens Co., N.B.; m. AMY CARLE. Notes for JOHN SHAW: 1) By Order of His Excellency SIR HENRY CLINTON. General and Commander in Chief of all his majesty's Forces within the Colonies lying on the Atlantic Ocean, from Nova Scotia to West-Florida, inclusive, &c. &c. Permission and Protection is hereby Granted to John Shaw to inclose and cultivate for his own benefit till further Ordes, Fifty Acres of the Lands of John Wycoff at New Lotts in Kings County on Long Island. And also to occupy one half of the Dwelling House and Barn standing on the above mentioned lands (the said John Wycoff being in Rebellion) and to erect a temporary Habitation for himself and Family, and sufficient shelter for his Cattle. Upon Condition that the said John Shaw behaves himself, as becomes a Loyal Subject of the Crown of Great-Britain, and that the said Fifty Acres are properly inclosed and cultivated according to the intention of this Permit. New York the 29th Day of March 1779.

ii. DEBORAH? SHAW.

Thank you, George Shaw, catfish_creek@hotmail.com
Thank you...I hadn't expected such a prompt response! I had found Samuel Wilson in the Dutchess County Mlilitia as indicated on the SAR applications. Is the reason he is not considered DAR patriot that no has applied for membership using his name?

Here is Asbury's obituary. There is a picture I posted of Asbury on my tree on the family trees of Ancestry. Smith Family Tree, look for that one.

Putnam County Courier, Carmel, NY - February 13,1920

Asbury C. Townsend, one of Putnam County's most enterprising and successful business men, died at his home at Kent Cliffs on Saturday afternoon, February 7, 1920, at the age of 63 years.
Mr. Townsend was born in Kent on July 18, 1857, a son of John H. and Emeline Barrett Townsend. He was reared on a farm and received his education at the district schools in the town, acquiring a good practical education. He was engaged in the store business, the lumber business; operated a garage and before the telephone company would run a line to Kent Cliffs, Mr. Townsend constructed a telephone system which served the people of his community and connected it with the Bell system at Carmel. This business was conducted by him for a few years and he later sold the equipment to the New York Telephone Company, who now maintain it. A democrat in politics, he served as postmaster at Kent Cliffs, town clerk, supervisor and as chairman of the county committee for 25 years.
He was united in marriage with Miss Catherine E. Tompkins on March 9, 1881 and she survives with his mother.
Funeral services were held at his late home on Wednesday in charge of Rev. William Stocum, pastor of the Kent Cliffs Baptist church. Interment was made in the Townsend plot in the Halstead Cemetery.

Here is the obit of John Townsend's wife:

Putnam County Courier, Carmel, NY - Friday, Afternoon, December 30, 1927

Mrs. Emeline Barrett Townsend, widow of the late John H. Townsend, and the oldest resident of this section of the county, died last Friday, Dec. 23, 1927, at the home of her son, Byron E. Townsend, at Boyd's Corners in Kent. Her death was caused by the shock of a fall which she suffered about three months ago. Although no bones were broken at the time, Mrs. Townsend had failed gradually since then.
She was a very remarkable woman for one of such advanced age and had been about her home daily previous to suffering the fall.
The deceased was a daughter of Benoni and Emily Barrett, both members of two branches of the Barrett family who were early settlers in this section and after whom Barrett Hill was named. Her birth occurred at the homestead on the shore of Barrett Pond May 27, 1831. About seventy years ago she was united in marriage with John- H. Townsend and to them were born five children.
Robert and Charles, died in infancy and Lewis and Asbury C. Townsend, the latter, the well known merchant of Kent Cliffs for many years and former Democratic county chairman and supervisor of Kent, died some years ago; Byron E. Townsend, being the only surviving child.
Mrs. Townsend's husband died in 1881, and since that time she had resided with her son at whose home she passed away. Having spent her entire life in this section it was Mrs. Townsend's privilege to witness many changes not only in the community but also in the advancement of civilization. She recalled very vividly the fertile valley populated with farm homes that is now covered with the waters of Boyd's reservoir and witnessed the building bf Boyd's dam, the first of the city's watershed chain of reservoirs in Putnam county. She recalled the days when Farmers Mills was a thriving business center and milling an important industry along the-streams. Having watched the arrival and departure of the stage coaches as the only means of transportation between towns during her girlhood, Mrs. Townsend has witnessed the advent of the railroad, automobile and airplane, while the telephone and- radio hare been inventions, the use of which Mrs. Townsend has enjoyed.
When a girl Mrs. Townsend united with the Kent Cliffs Baptist church and at the time 'of her death was the oldest member. Besides her son, Mrs. Townsend leaves several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Kent Cliffs Baptist church and were attended by a large number of friends. Rev. James Douglass, pastor of the Drew M. E. church, of Carmel, officiated, and two hymns, "Nearer My God to Thee,'' and "Rock of Ages," were sung by Mrs. Fred Foshay. Interment was made in the family plot in the Halstead cemetery. The bearers were Edward H. Foshay. Allan Foshay. Coleman S. Townsend and James D. Hyatt.
Do you mean John Townsend the father of Lewis B? Is so, I have to say I haven't really done much research on the Townsend side. I've done research on Lewis's wife Jennie D. Hunt's side of the family.
The only thing further back on the Townsend side, was John's wife Emeline Barrett was the daughter of Bennoni & Emily Barrett.

Sorry.

Thanks for the reply. Since I posted that I had worked out through Leroy's grandson Tyler.

Jennie Hunt was a half first cousin 4x removed. Distant but still a branch on the tree.

So I guess that makes us cousins also!

Pleasure to meet you!

Go to the DRC NA top three files listed and then the bottom two, SH bap and SH marr. I have worked other Hitchcock/Hiscok family members from way back to Putnam County, NY, and there are some of them here. If nothing else it makes for interesting reading.
Good Luck!
