I do have this family in my database. They continued to live in Volney, Oswego, NY until their deaths. However, William Bartlett, son of Lorenzo (1817-1902) and Annette (1830-1916) (Porter) Bartlett, is not William Bartlett, husband of Rebecca Johnson and father of Margaret Lowe (Bartlett) DuBois. Lorenzo, Annette, and their son William (1853-1890) are all buried in the Mt. Pleasant Western Cemetery, Volney, Oswego, NY.
In the June 1870 census William Bartlett, 18, b. NY, is working as a domestic, residing New Paltz, Ulster, NY. In the June 1880 census he and his wife Rebecca are living in New Paltz, Ulster, NY with their daughters Maggie 3 and Lizzie 1.
In both the 1870 and 1880 census records William Bartlett, son of Lorenzo and Annette Bartlett, is living with them in Volney, Oswego, NY.
It would seem that your search for William Bartlett's parents should continue in Ulster Co., NY rather than in Oswego County. (I have had no luck finding them on the 1860 census in Ulster Co., NY)

I was researching my William E Bartlett (1852-1899) who appears in New Paltz, Ulster, NY. I found a census record from 1860 that lists William and his family in Oswego, NY. Family names are Lorenzo, Anna, Emma, Henry, George, William and Charles. I didn't know if this matched anything that you had. I'm having no luck finding this family after 1860.

I was born in Fulton,NY and my mom was Emily Louise King before marriage to my dad Millard A. Pettingill They were married Sept. 1, 1955 and I was born April 14,1956. My great granmother Helen Pettingill had relatives that lived in Fulton,NY and my father and mother resided there for a very short time before and after my birth. I'm looking for the where abouts of my maternal side of the family. Also the location of some cousins on my dads side Patricia and Dorothy Mason. My mother left me sometime after I was born and have never connected with her but was told she is still alive and well some where? She may be in Pennsyvania by now but her relatives may be in Hannibal? Any leads appreciated.

Amele Gates was my great grandfather's brother. He was Eugene Edward Gates. I show Amele as being born in 1852, does that sound correct to you? Can you tell me when he died and where he is buried? They had a sister Lina Gates (1838-1872) who is buried in the St. Anne's Catholic Cem. on French St. in Mexico, NY. Lina's stone is in French and she is also listed on the Lombard stone next to hers. It is where I found the old spelling of Goetz also. Their mother was Julia Felicia Gates Lombard. She married a Joseph Lombard and that is how the family wound up in Parrish/Mexico area of NYS. She is buried in the same cemetery as this husband. I would gladly share more if you like.
Lucius France was born in Monroe Co. NY about 1852. His parents were Jacob and Emily (Earle) France. The family lived in the town of Perinton, Monroe Co., NY, as did the Earle family. Jacob died 4 Nov 1853. Emily's parents were Reuben and Caroline Earle. Emily and Jacob also had a daughter, Arabelle, b. abt 1853 who married Harry Vanness. Emily later remarried German born Abraham Crouse who died before 1875. In 1870, Emily and Abraham, along with Lucius and Arabelle, were residing in Oswego's 2nd Ward; other than that they appear on census' in Perinton. Lucius and Mary Arden married in Oswego 5 Aug 1876, however there is a notation in the church record that indicates the original ceremony may have been performed some place else.

I'll hazzard a SWAG.

The organizational meeting for Schroeppel was held at the house of James B. Richardson, who was the son of Dr. Samuel Richardson. The Richardsons were from the Dracut/Methune MA area, then crossed the border to Pelham, NH, then went to Windham Co., VT and to Onondaga and Lafayette, NY before settling in Schroeppel in the late 1820/early 1830's.

There is a Daniel Phillips in Newfane, Windham, Vermont in the 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830 US census records.

Dr. Richardson was born in 1768 and was reported to have been a surgeon in the War of 1812 from VT.

Does it prove anything? No. But it might connect with the Clark, Fish, Breed and Richardsons that seems to have either come together or followed each other in those locations.

Good hunting.

Here's another tidbit I found via the BALDWINSVILLE MESSENGER newspaper...stuff about WRIGHT'S CORNERS, CHASE CEMETERY, and the farm that belonged to MARYATT M. WRIGHT and his wife, the former EMILY JANE REYNOLDS. This IS the very farm I spoke about in my emails to you...the farm that turns out to be the place where I boarded my horse back in the 1970's! If only I knew then what I know now...I actually had a (if I've figured this correctly on my chart) "first cousin, four-times removed" who lived on that farm...EMILY JANE (Reynolds) WRIGHT!

Transcribed from the "Baldwinsville Messenger" Newspaper

Looking Backward: Wright’s Corners School, District No. 12
by Steve McMahon 04/22/09

This week’s story is about the old Wright’s Corners School, District no. 12, 10th in a series regarding our early schools. Wright’s Corners marks the spot where Lamson Road crosses Route 48, once known as the old State Road, about five miles north of the village of Baldwinsville. The building still sits on the northeast corner, where it now serves the Baptist congregation of the Lamson Road Community Church.

The old schoolhouse has been there for at least 150 years, as an 1860 map of the town clearly shows it in its present location. The building’s longevity can be attributed partly to its construction. According to an article from the Messenger dated Aug. 8, 1995, the current church congregation discovered during the building’s renovation that “At the entrance to the schoolhouse are slats of wood, some more than 20 inches across, and the church is grounded on 35 foot beams. ‘We don’t even have trees that wide anymore,’ (one man) said of the lumber used in the original construction.” Since it ceased being a schoolhouse over 50 years ago, it has housed various church services on the weekends. And, even when its primary purpose was schooling, it still served as a local meeting house and occasional church for the surrounding farm families.

While clearly a community, Wright’s Corners isn’t as much a hamlet as a crossroads. You’ll find local landmarks on the other three corners including Brzostek’s Auction House, Tim Reeves’ Old Lamson Station Store and the Wrightway General Store, owned and operated by Mike Casale. I’m indebted to Mike for his generous support of local history, especially of nearby Lamson Station and Little Utica. Still, as a crossroads, Wright’s Corners merits no mention in any of the old tomes on which I rely for the history of Lysander and its schools. Beyond the books, however, there are old maps, newspaper articles, census archives and cemetery records. Based on these sources, I’ve pieced together a sketchy history of Wright’s Corners.

Its most likely namesake was Lewis Wright. Although he probably settled here even earlier, he first appears at Wright’s Corners in 1830. Subsequent censuses confirm that this is where he stayed through 1870. Maps of the area from 1860 and 1874 picture his farm on the southwest corner of the crossroads. This is kitty-corner across from the schoolhouse. Lewis died in 1878 at the age of 74. His final resting place is just up the road at Chase Cemetery, where he’s buried with his wife, Rhoda or “Roby,” and two of their children. She died in 1877 at the age of 79. Chase Cemetery is one mile north of Wright’s Corners, on the right just before you cross into Oswego County. As you would expect, in addition to folks named “Wright,” Chase Cemetery is also full of folks named “Chase.”

That’s because there have been Chases around here almost as long as there have been Wrights; long enough that Wright’s Corners could just as easily have been named ‘Chase’s Corners.’ As early as 1840, the Chase family was living in the home just northwest of the school, across the State Road. In fact, according to an article by Lysander Town Historian Pearl Palmer in the 1943 edition of the Messenger, “The house now occupied by the Chase family, century farmers of the Lysander township, was erected between 1855 and 1859, as an older sister was born in the house during the former year, while Stephen's (Stephen H. Chase’s) birth occurred in the home where he still resides with his son, Leonard S. Chase and family.”

The article further states that “The name Chase, so familiar to residents of the north end of the township of Lysander, must have first appeared in this section between 1835 and 1838, for according to inscriptions on a monument in Chase Cemetery, Daniel Chase (Stephen’s great grandfather) died July 28, 1838, aged 85 years . . . Since the name Chase is not recorded on the Lysander assessment role (sic) of 1835 and the first family burial occurred in 1838, it is logical to assume that this large land owner…arrived with his family and aged parents during that three year interval; (son) Stephen took up a 600-acre tract of land extending from Wright’s Corners northward very nearly to the Oswego county line, and including the greater part of the cemetery, which bears his name in acknowledgment of the grant of land which he gave the public for burial purposes. Apparently his father was the first burial, and the family plot inclosed (sic) by an iron fence and located in the south central part of the cemetery, provided the nucleus for the Chase Cemetery.”

One of Daniel’s great, great grandsons, Leonard S. Chase, married Ivy K. Austic of South Granby, and continued to farm on the family homestead across from the Wright’s Corners school. They had two children, Robert and Jean. Jean went to school at Wright’s Corners with her future husband, Arthur J. Coville. Jean passed away in 2003, after a lifetime of service and friendship in the community. Art’s still going strong at the age of 87. Back on an unseasonably warm Saturday in March, I had a chance to visit with Art. Joining Art was his son, Bruce, the well-known author of children’s books, and Alice Horner, lifetime resident of nearby Little Utica and friend of the family.

Bruce got the conversation going. “When dad’s mother died, he was sent to live and attend school in Wright’s Corners.” Art picked up the story from there. “I was born Arthur Farrington in South Granby. I was only three years old when my mother died, and my brother Lloyd was just eighteen months old. It was very sudden. Luther and Ruth Coville adopted me. Luther was my mother’s brother. At the same time, Lloyd was adopted by Ezra and Viola Coville Baker. Viola was my mother’s sister. So, I became Arthur Coville and he became Lloyd Baker.” Bruce commented that due to these adoptions and subsequent remarriages, “Carl Carpenter, dad’s best friend from school, would have been his foster stepbrother-in-law. So, it’s really not a family tree, it’s a family bush.”

Art remembers that his teacher was Myrtle Potter. “I had her the whole time I was there (circa 1927 to 1934), up until eighth or ninth grade, when I went to Phoenix. My future wife, Jean Chase, was in school with me at the time. She was four years younger than me. Miss Potter boarded down at the Chase farm, and Jean didn’t like living with the school-teacher, because she could never get away from her. When my father-in-law (Leonard Chase) was fairly young and going to the Wright’s Corners school, he had a similar problem. His teacher was his sister, Alida, but everybody called her Lidie or Lida. But, he had to call her Miss Chase.” Alida later married Clarence Reed and taught in several other rural schools in the town of Lysander.

Art continued. “The Wright’s Corners schoolhouse faced west. Our house was right next to a feed mill. One day, I was sitting in school. I looked out the window and saw that my house was on fire. I begged Miss Potter to let me go, so that I could help put it out. She said no. So, I jumped out the back window and ran as fast as I could. I don’t remember whether I went to get help, or what.” Art paused, and I could tell that this was a difficult memory to recall. “All I remember is that I wanted to go. You know, it was my home and it was on fire. Both our house and the mill burned down that day.”

At that point, Alice chimed in. “Art’s father and uncle both had stores about one-half mile apart, one at Lamson’s and one at Wright’s Corners.” Art continued. “My Uncle Raymond Coville’s store at Wright’s Corners was originally a hot dog stand that later became a general store. It was on my grandmother Coville’s property. Her house was on the south side of the store toward Baldwinsville. My father, Luther Coville had a pretty good size grocery store over by the railroad tracks over in Lamson’s.” Alice finished Art’s thought. “But, Luther finally moved his store to Little Utica, and then (Nate) Aller took it over.” In addition to operating a farm and a general store, Luther Coville was supervisor of the town of Lysander for a number of years in the 1940’s.

My grandmother also went to school at Wright’s Corners. Grandma Dee-Dee, as I’ve always known her since I was born, celebrated her 100th birthday last September. My dad and I recently treated Dee-Dee to lunch in Fulton. On the way back, we stopped at the old school building at Wright’s Corners. As we sat in the parking lot of the current church, she pointed out the old school building. “It’s the part facing west,” she said. “I don’t remember much about going there (circa 1918 to 1922). But, I do remember walking to school in kinds of weather from our house at the corner of Sixty Road and Lamson Road. The dividing line between the Wright’s Corners and Phoenix school districts was right down the middle of Sixty Road, so ours was the last house on the line. We would start walking and then meet up with groups of school children at different points along the way. I don’t know how far it was exactly, but it seemed like about three miles.”

As she spoke, we drove down Lamson Road past Smokey Hollow Road and points east toward Phoenix. When we reached the corner, I glanced down at the odometer. We had traveled about 1.75 miles from the location of the old Wright’s Corners schoolhouse. Grandma Dee-Dee seemed somewhat surprised, and perhaps a bit embarrassed, that the trip was “shorter” than she thought. I had to remind her that it had been a long, long time since a 10-year-old child walked 3.5 miles round-trip to school each day, in any kind of weather. As if to prove my point, one of my teenagers just interrupted my typing to request a ride to a friend’s house, because “it’s starting to rain a little bit.” By the way, this friend’s home is less than one-half mile away, by way of a paved path. I rest my case.

In two weeks, read the next article in the series, “Lysander Goes to School.” Looking Backward will appear in the Messenger every other week, as long as there are stories to tell. If you have questions about this story or suggestions for future ones, including any local historical images or information, please contact me via e-mail at bvillehistory@earthlink.net.

(A photo that accompanied the article was captioned)..."Schoolboy Arthur Coville, circa 1931. In the background is Lamson's Station and Scriber's Store, where his adoptive father, Luther Coville, once worked"

Myron

Could the Eva on the 1900 census not be Eva Jerrett?? Could she possibly be a daughter of Sarah Jerrett by another marriage? According to the 1900 census Ezra Jerrett was married 25 years--so married to Sarah about 1875.

I found a newspaper article that may help. I am not sure it is the right George Hadden but it could be.

Oswego Daily Times Thursday 30 Jun 1891

STERLING
June 25- Word reached here recently of the death of Mrs George Hadden of Michigan, formerly of this place. It will be remembered she, with her husband, went west a little over a year ago, where they expected to reside, but not liking it well enough to settle, they returned and lived in Oswego until Mr Hadden's death, which occurred the latter part of the winter or early spring. Then Mrs Hadden went west again to live with her parents. Word reached here occasionally of her failing health and now of her death. Two little children are left fatherless and motherless.

As I said, I'm not sure this is the right family but it's something to check out.

Kathy

I am trying without any luck to find out if George Hadden died before Eva L Jerrett was remarried to Albert Clayton Pember or if they just were just divorced. You say that family says he died in 1950. Any source for that? You wrote he was born abt 1863?. Any other source for that one? Is this all "Family Knowledge"? (Family Knowledge is a valid kind of source.)
Myron Mike Crandall

Thank You for the information about George S. Hadden you posted! I too have run into a brick wall finding the birth and death of George S. Hadden. My interest is from the Pember side of the family. I do have more information about Eva L. Jerrett. Here it is:

"John Pember, The History of the Pember Family in America."
Compiled by Mrs. Celeste Pember Hazen.
Page 293
378. Albert C8.
Yes, thank you. In the intervening years since that post, I have confirmed my Nora was not the daughter of Patrick, but was indeed the daughter Thomas Tobin and Catherine Kiley. Now, if I could just find some information on this couple! Unfortunately, Thomas Tobin seems to be a common name. Thanks.

No,this Nora Tobin did not marry John Culbertson; She married George Hulzhizer. There are so many mistakes being propagated about the different Tobin family lines using unverified information in family trees found on line; you really need to verify your results absolutely-don't assume that because someone put it in their fam. tree that it is correct--there are a lot of people out there just collecting names!
