FRANK H. GIESELMAN, born 01 Feb 1882 in Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY, and died perhaps in QUEENS, NEW YORK COUNTY, NY.

I am searching for the death date and burial information on FRANK H. GIESELMAN, born 01 Feb 1882 in Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY, and died some time before December 1974, perhaps in QUEENS, NEW YORK COUNTY, NY. He is my grand uncle and was a police office on the New York City police department. It appears he lived in Queens, NY. He married SARAH about 1915; not sure if it was in Syracuse or New York City. She was born 22 Feb 1895 in New York State, and died Aug 1974 in Huntington Station, Suffolk County, NY according to Social Security Death Index. It is possible Frank died there as well. Frank Gieselman descends from my great grandfather, John F. Gieselman, details below. I’m guessing he died after September 1952 when he appeared in his brother Edward’s obituary and before December 1974 at which time he DID NOT appear as a survivor in his sister’s obituary (Hattie Gieselman Forsythe).

If anyone has information to share on this matter, I would appreciate it. Thank you. Richard Wheeler

Descendants of John F. Gieselman, Syracuse, NY

GENERATION NO. 1

JOHN F. She was born 09 Dec 1851 in Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY, and died 12 Jun 1939 in Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY.

More about JOHN F.

I am wondering if someone can possibly do a lookup of the NYS death index at the Onondaga County Public Library for me. I'm looking for the death date and certificate # of Mary (Woodard/Woodward) Mason who died between 1880 and 1890, probably in Chateaugay, Franklin, NY. Hopefully, the index is alphabetical so the lookup isn't too time consuming.

I would greatly appreciate any help with this. I am happy to do a lookup at the Salt Lake Family History Library in exchange.

Sincerely,

Shannon Lehr
I'm researching the antecedents and origins of my GGG grandparents
George W. Elliott (b3/8.1830) & Jane E. McKevitt (b 4/3/1833) who were
married on
7/4/1853 in Baldwinsville by Rev A.S. Wightman.

I have a photocopy of the wedding announcement in the 7/15/1853 issue of the Democrat Press that spells Jane's name as McKibbett.
We have no futher info as to whether these people were raised in
Baldwinsville, Onondaga Co.,
somewhere nearby or who their parents were.

How might I find out if they were listed as members of seperate families
in the
1850 census, as a couple in the 1860 census, or perhaps are listed in
marrige records.

Can anyone direct me to records available online?

Perhaps Rev. Wightman pastored a local church which might have kept
records?

The family supposedly moved to Ithaca in 10/1869 and LaPorte,
IN in 6/1872.

I found something very interesting on FultonHistory.com. Some of you may have seen it already. There is a section on the site called "My Photo Albums" which has different folders with records of lots and interments along with registers for Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse as well as nearby Mount Adnah Cemetery in Fulton. A couple of other items are on there too. Anyways, the folders for the Mount Adnah Cemetery are separated by years. The folders for Oakwood Cemetery are separated by rolls. Unfortunately, you have to pick and choose files to possibly find who you're looking for. These files are copies from old records which I'm sure are still kept either at the cemetery or at the respective municipal building. It wouldn't hurt to gaze through the files (in PDF format). I haven't found a direct link to these from the main site, so here is the link below.

http://fultonhistory.com/my%20photo%20albums/Mt.%20Adnah/

Happy trails! :0)

Both were born in Colberg, Germany and died in the area around Skaneateles. They had at least two other sisters who remained in Germany. Katherine was married to Joseph Valentine Meyer (1865-1942) of the Alsace-Lorraine region of France. The American Legion Post #317 in Skaneateles Falls is named after her son, Valentine Meyer who died during World War I. Minnie was married twice, with her second husband being George Washington Devall (1869-1946) of Wayne County, New York. I have a copy of the death record for George, and it states Minnie's last name as "Miller." I'm not sure though if that is her maiden name or her previous maiden name. A listing through Ancestry OneTree showed a possible last name in parenthesis for Katherine Meyer being "Münich," although I have no certainty on that either.

The old newspaper articles aren't too helpful in reference the death notices for both sisters. It did show a middle initial of "M" for Katherine, which is more likely for the maiden name than her actual middle name.

Right now, I'm trying to obtain the death record for Minnie Devall from Onondaga County. As to how much it will remedy this query, I have no idea due to her being born outside the United States.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :0)

I saw part of an obituary for him (wasn't going to subscribe to the site to see the rest) dated 15 Mar 2002 from the Post Standard. Does anyone have access to the newspaper article/obituary and willing to share it with me?
My grandmother's mother was Lottie (Charlotte) Elliott; my grandmother was Grace Metzgar. I'm trying to put together that branch - my grandmother was disowned (her parents died and she was raised by an aunt and her family - she became "with child" and at 17 married Joseph J Donnelly from "the wrong side of the tracks") so there isn't much family history for me to go on! If you know anything about the Elliotts I would appreciate any information.

Eugene E. Rose & Frances Van Horn Smith (Syracuse, NY)

I'm trying to find out any information on Eugene E. Rose and Frances Van Horn Smith during their time living in Syracuse, New York. They moved to Geneva, Illinois in the 1870s, but returned to New York State around the turn of the century. Eugene was born near Clyde, New York in 1847. Frances was born in 1856 in New York. As far as I know, they had three children...Frederick John Rose (1873-1932), Giles Herbert Rose (1876-1939) and Charles Rose (born 1880). Giles and Charles were born in Illinois, but both of them moved back to New York. I believe Frances died in Syracuse in late 1904, as a newspaper article mentioned her being seriously ill with pneumonia. She was not on the 1910 U.S. Census. Eugene later moved in with his son Frederick, who was also living in Syracuse. That is on the census. I'm still trying to find out when he died, but it's most likely sometime between 1910 and 1920. What I'm trying to find out is where they are buried at. I'm fairly sure they are buried somewhere in either Onondaga, Cayuga or Wayne counties. I haven't been able to find much information in the old local newspapers for the Finger Lakes area of New York. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll keep looking through the newspaper articles as well. Thanks. :0)

Hiram married Harriet Pulsipher in Spafford in
the 1840s. They eventually moved to Ohio, Ill and finally settled in
Wisconsin.
I have checked for a probate for Hiram, no joy there. Are church records
available for Spafford?
Searching for Nina Purington Newhart, born about 1818, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH (or) Harold G. Newhart (or) their children

I am searching for my 1st cousin, 1x removed. Her maiden name was Nina Purington, born about 1818, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH. Her parents were Everett E. Purington, born 1885, assumed to be in Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY, died 27 Nov 1969, Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY and Fern Estelle Wheeler, born Aug 1885 in South Otselic, Chenango County, NY, died 19 Feb 1971, Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY. The parents (Everett & Fern) lived in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH during his working days in a steel mill. After retirement, they moved back to Syracuse, NY where both died and are buried in Morningside/Oakwood Cemetery (same), Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY. The address while living in Cleveland was 1885 Windermere Street, Cleveland, OH 44112. Nina shows up in both the 1920 and 1930 Federal Census. It is assumed she married Harold G. Newhart (from obituary - Everett E. Purington, 1969). The obituary does not list a city for the daughter, Nina Newhart, or the two grandchildren.

It is my assumption that Nina is now deceased and I would actually be trying to contact or locate the two grandchildren who would be my 2nd cousins. Our great grandmother, Minnie Warner Wheeler Reed actually lived with the Purington family (her daughter, Fern Estelle Wheeler Purington) in Cleveland until her death in 1955. Minnie is also buried in Morningside/Oakwood Cemetery (same), Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY along side her first husband, DeVer Carter Wheeler, who died at an early age in 1903. Minnie’s second husband was Iram C. Reed of Syracuse who died in 1925.

I descend from Minnie’s son, Hiram DeForest Wheeler and was raised in the Syracuse New York area. If you know of either Nina Purington Newhart, or her children, I would appreciate it if you would contact me. Thank you, Richard Wheeler
Christiana Howlett, a daughter of Parley Howlett Sr., married James Slade - probably in Onondaga County, before 1804. Diane Flinn listed them as married and also had a list of their children in a 1997 post to the Rootsweb Onondaga mailing list. I am trying to find her or a Howlett researcher who could indicate how this family listing was obtained and if there are any records that go with it somewhere (marriage, probate, etc.). James' likely sister, Phoebe Slade, married Jacob Blodgett here in Onondaga, and they were in the same area. A third possible sibling, Russell Slade, was also here and in an Onondaga War of 1812 company of Capt. Mead. I am interested in the Howlett connection.
I am from RI. Looking for an ancestor's marriage record so I can get the parents' names. I looked through the Skaneateles historical society website, found the newspaper record from the Columbian, but it just lists the bride and groom. How do I get the rest of the info that is on the original record, or a copy of the original record?

The marriage in Skaneateles on 13 Feb 1848 was between: Addison H. Davis and Phebe Ann Shepherd. The newspaper record from the Columbian is dated 17 Feb 1848, but I need the actual marrige record or a copy of it. Thanks in advance for any help,

Sincerely,

Jason
jsoscia3@yahoo.com

Article - ROAD’S PATH A GRAVE MATTER, by Bob Peel (Daniel Wheeler, born 1771)

ROAD’S PATH A GRAVE MATTER, by Bob Peel (Daniel Wheeler, born 1771)

From - Sunday Syracuse Herald American Newspaper, center section (Empire Magazine), May 11, 1980, page 17.

Two centuries ago down in Smith’s Valley on the banks of the Chenango River (Lebanon, Madison County, NY) they started a do-it-yourself cemetery to save a milling community. It worked perfectly and today local residents are doing their best to make certain this particular piece of their history never again slides back into weed-choked obscurity.

Smith’s Valley is more than halfway down the Chenango from Eaton to Randalleville. The cemetery sits safely off the east bank of the river; it was one of the first areas to turn green this spring as the Valley woke up from winter. Several hundred tombstones are lined up under the spruce and cedar trees. They mark the final resting places on this earth for families tracing their way back to the pioneers. Their names make a Who’s Who for Smiths Valley. But it may be the most important one of all simply has no name. He may have been a pauper, criminal or simply an unknown person. Here is how it happened.

When the first families moved in from Vermont and New York’s lower Hudson Valley, roads were little more than paths and they stayed that way. In 1797, the state Legislature authorized a lottery to raise $45,000 for rural road improvement. Smith’s Valley needed help badly. The center of activities was a pair of mills. Dan Wheeler ran the gristmill on the west bank while his brother, Elisha, had a sawmill across from him and slightly down stream. All the neighbors needed the Wheeler brothers and they respected their honesty and skill. But, when news that a new road was authorized, it appeared the mills might he isolated or even lost completely.

Back on the hills west of the two mills, the growing village of Lebanon had some citizens with a little extra clout. They began to pull a few political strings to get that road money to pay for a route cut directly east from Lebanon to Fayne’s Settlement, now better known as Hamilton. And that would have left the two Wheeler mills high, dry and probably eventually out of work. Something had to be done. The valley people felt they had reason on their side but it evidently didn’t help. More drastic action was needed.

David Shapley Jr., one of the early settlers, and Dan Wheeler, the gristmill owner, took action. Very quietly, probably well after dark, they went up toward Eaton and exhumed a cadaver from the potter’s field there. The site was close to the present location of the Gerritt Smith Infirmary. Then, still in the darkness, they reburied the unknown in a field smack dab in the middle of the new road route favored by the hill people from Lebanon. More burials soon followed and an official cemetery association was formed. Stone slabs marked the graves.

The mid-night shovel work succeeded. The hill people abandoned their proposal to run the new road straight down the hill. The alternative was accepted and the route circled around the valley to take in both of the Wheeler mills before it continued eastward.

Today the road to Hamilton follows essentially the same direction. You come down School House Hill., cross the River Road and go along Armstrong Road until you turn northeast for Hamilton. It is the long way around.

That cemetery proved to be no dig-by-night venture. Both the Shapleys and the Wheelers made certain its existence was justified. Eight (8) Wheeler and ten (10) Shapley graves were dug there before 1850. One of the earliest is that of Dan Wheeler, one of the co-conspirators. He died on Christmas Day, 1806, when an accident took his life in his own mill at the age of only 35 years. The miller still was very well regarded by his family and friends. The faded and weatherworn stone reads: “He lived a good moral life and left some evidence at his death of a glorious resurrection.” If you are in the area before the grass grows too high you will easily see the outlines or foundations of the two Wheeler mills. Take Armstrong Road across the Chenango River. The little cemetery stands out like a jewel after you pass the remnants of the two mills. About three years ago (that would have been 1977) a restoration and maintenance committee was formed to rescue it from oblivion. The stones had fallen and many were broken. Myrtle, ever present in country burial grounds, covered most of the markers. Weeds of every description stood between the stones and what was left of a fence was in worse shape than the tombstones. Some of the graves and most of the walkways had sunken below ground level; they collected rain water in the summer.

(The actually article go on, but I have end my word-for-word transcription at this point).

The restoration and maintenance project was very successful and today, in the year 2007, Smith’s Valley Cemetery is in excellent condition.

This information is excerpts from the original article written by Bob Peel. It was published in the Sunday Syracuse Herald American Newspaper, center section (Empire Magazine), May 11, 1980, page 17.

Origin of Randalleville Cemetery, now Smith’s Valley Cemetery, on Armstrong Road approximately ½ mile east of the Chenango River.

Daniel Wheeler, born 1771, Canaan, Columbia County, NY; died December 25, 1806 (Christmas Day) Lebanon, Madison County, NY. Daniel Wheeler is the 4th great grandfather of Karen Wheeler Sherbeck, Richard, Donald & Douglas Wheeler, all natives Syracuse, NY - community of Eastwood (Richard is now retired and living in Florida and Donald died on 06 Jul 2004).
Obituary - Adam Group, 26 May 1893

Obituary - Adam Group, 26 May 1893

The Evening Herald, Syracuse, NY, Friday, May 26, 1893, Page 4

Obituary – Death of Adam Group

Career of the Veteran Police Officer and Court Interpreter

At 7:20 A. M. today Police Court Interpreter and Doorman Adam Group died at his home, No. 123 Townsend Alley. Up to late yesterday afternoon it was not thought that his illness was of a serious nature. Tuesday morning he ate his usually hearty breakfast and went to the Central Police station to report for duty. A little before 8 o’clock he was seized with severe pains in the stomach and Dr. D. M. Totman was called. As he had been subject to cramps of the stomach it was thought to be a return of the old malady and the Doctor prescribed for him, and in an hour or so he was relieved considerably, and Supervisor of the Sixteenth ward, Adam Klink, a son-in-law, removed him in a carriage to his home, Doctor Totman accompanying him. On Wednesday he was attended by Doctor Kemter and Alfred Mercer, who prescribed the usual remedies. Yesterday it was found that the trouble did not yield, and it became apparent that a severe illness was developing, so late yesterday afternoon a council of physicians, composed of Doctors Kemter, Saxer, Mercer, Totman, Welch and Oberlander, was called. They pronounced his illness inflammation of the bowels and that the prospects of his recovery were very slight. From that time on he grew gradually weaker until he died. When the results of the council was made known Mrs. Rosina Group , who, with her three daughters, were in Chicago visiting two married daughters and a son who live there and incidentally seeing the World’s Fair, was telegraphed to, but she did not reach the city until this afternoon.

Sketch of his Life - Adam Group was born in Rhine-by-Ulmet, Germany, May 7th, 1823. Forty-five years ago next fall he left his native land for America, coming direct to Syracuse. He learned the trade of a tanner, but as this did not agree with his health he abandoned it for the business of salt boiler. On October 9th, 1861, the first year of the war of the rebellion, he enlisted at Auburn with the Seventh-fifth regiment and became a member of the regimental band. By order of the Secretary of War, the band was mustered out of service in New Orleans September 8th, 1862. Mr. Group returned to this city and resumed his work of salt boiling, and in November, 1869, soon after the reorganization of the forces into what is known as the metropolitan system, he became a patrolman. This position was faithfully filled by him until May 1st, 1885, when he became doorman and court interpreter at the Police headquarters. This promotion was given him because he spoke German and French and had a smattering of Spanish, Italian and other languages and dialects which made him a very useful man about headquarters. In these respects there is not a man on the police force that can take his place. His knowledge of the different tongues was acquired while traveling in Europe with a band of musicians. About five or six years were spent by him in this sort of travel, and in that time he had visited all the great cities of Europe. He was a good observer and never tired of telling stories of his travels. He was a fine musician, his instruments being clarinet and trombone. Before going on the police force Mr. Group lived for two years in Edgerton, Ohio. With this exception, his home has been in Syracuse since he came to America.

Father of Fifteen Children - He had been married forty-four years and had been the father of fifteen children. Ten are living, seven daughters and three sons. With the exception of two daughters and one son who live in Chicago, the family, including the widow, live in this city. He came of a long-lived race, and few people who saw him about his daily employment can realize that he was seventy years old. A sister, who was with him when he died, is seventy-eight years old. A brother, who lives in Ohio, is eighty-nine years old, and the deceased was planning to take his furlough the 15th of next month and pay him a visit.

Officer Group was member of Central City Lodge, Order of Harugari, and a member of Lilly post.

The deceased was a member of the Policemen’s Mutual Benefit society and his family will, therefore, receive a death benefit of three dollars from each member of the society.

The dead officer was a general favorite about Headquarters. His sunny temperament and witty replies are remembered by his associates. He was a kind father and was intensely devoted to his family, and his home life was one of affection and beauty. He had lived for about a quarter of a century in the house where he died. End

Both are buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY.

Adam Group is my 2nd great grandfather; his daughter, Elizabeth "Libbie" Group married John F. Gieselman, my great mother and grandfather.

Question – If any one knows Adam Group wife’s maiden name (Rosina Group, but listed as Lucinda on earlier Federal Census information) or the name of her parents, I would appreciate being contacted.
Death - Dever C. Wheeler meets death from Electrical Shock, March 24, 1903

Death - Dever C. Wheeler meets death from Electrical Shock, March 24, 1903

The Article is from “The Evening Herald”, Syracuse NY, March 24, 1903 (Transcribed below)

Light Wire Killed Him

DeVer C. Wheeler meets death from Electrical Shock.

Took hold of wire in cellar of Dungey Store and was Killed Instantly!

Trouble on an electrical light circuit in the Sixteenth Ward early last evening caused the electrocution of DeVer Carter Wheeler, a clerk in the grocery store of Dungey & Company, and the injury of several others in the same ward, including several Alderman, Frank H. Crouse, T. W. Little, Frank Storm, a meat cutter, and Miss Fannie Stephens, another clerk in the Dungey store.

The accident happened about 5 o’clock last night in the basement of the Dungey store just as Wheeler went down to fill an order. At the foot of the stairs was an incandescent light strung on a long cord so that the light could be carried to different places in the cellar. Wheeler as he went down took hold of this cord just back of the lamp, intending to carry it back across the cellar.

The wire was heavily charged, and as Wheeler took hold of it he received the entire charge into his body, burning and charring the hand which was fastened to the death-dealing wire. The shock threw him backwards, but he did not let go of the wire, with the result that his weight, thrown on the wire, broke it. Wheeler’s head fell on a small grocery box, breaking the box, although it did not injure Mr. Wheeler’s skull.

A SECOND SHOCK - One of the clerks in the store, Miss Fannie Stephens, was near the cellar entrance and saw a flash upstairs, and at the same time the whole cellar lighted. She called to Wheeler, and received no answer, went down stairs to investigate. Finding Wheeler’s body on the cellar floor, she took hold of the body and at the same time, in an attempt to pull the wire from his hand, grasped it. Thus Miss Stephens received a severe shock, throwing her backwards and badly burning her hand.

Immediately after the accident Dr. C. Floyd Burrows was called, and he was followed to the scene of the accident by Dr. F. E. Easton and Dr. J. Herbert Irish. They could not revive the man. It was the opinion of Coroner Matthews that Wheeler instantly.

Wheeler was born March 20th, 1860, at Otselic, Chenango County. In 1889 he moved to Syracuse and began work in Papworth’s Grocery. About three months ago he began work in the store of Dungey & Company, where he was killed. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Flora Wheeler, a widow, Mrs. Minnie “Warner” Wheeler, one son Hiram Deforest, and a daughter, Fern Estelle. Mr. Wheeler was member of the Royal A_____ (word unreadable but start with A?), the Republican Escort club, and was formerly a member of the Sons of Veterans.

End

Dever C. Wheeler was preceded in death by his father, Captain Hiram S Wheeler of South Otselic, Chenango County, NY. He died on 02 Jun 1886 and was a Civil War Veteran, having served with New York’s 114th Regiment.

Daughter, Fern Estelle Wheeler married Everett E. Purington, about 1906, Syracuse.
Article from Newspaper - Nathaniel & Valentina Meager’s Golden Wedding Anniversary, October 7, 1896

Nathaniel & Valentina Meager’s Golden Wedding Anniversary

From Cortland Evening Standard, Wednesday, October 7, 1896, (also appeared in the Cortland Semi-Weekly Edition, Friday, October 9, 1896), transcription of article from newspaper.

Golden Wedding Anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Nathaniel Meager of Cortland

Celebrated at Their Home on Woodruff Street Tuesday Night, Married October 6, 1846, in Plymouth Church, England – Sketch of Their Lives

Mr. & Mrs. Nathaniel Meager of 16 Woodruff Street bear the distinction of having passed the fifty-year mark in wedded life, a privilege which statistics say comes to but one couple in about eleven thousand. Last evening the occasion was celebrated at their pleasant home by the gathering of all their children who live in this country, and a few relatives and friends. Only one of their children was absent, the one living in England.

The following are those who attended: Mr. & Mrs. John E. Meager & children of Syracuse, Mr. & Mrs. Nathaniel P. Meager, Mr. & Mrs. James Meager, Mr. & Mrs. George Dickinson of Courtland, Mrs. Emma Kentfield and Miss Valentina H. Meager of Cortland, Mr. Alfred W. Meager of Syracuse, Mr.& Mrs. Fred Seeber, Mr. & Mrs. W. Lincoln Seeber, Mr. & Mrs. Oscar P. Miner, Mr. & Mrs. H. C. Harrington and Mrs. M. Dickinson of Cortland, Miss Taddie Dickinson of Syracuse, Mrs. Martin and Miss Annie Martin of Homer.

The rooms were very prettily decorated with autumn leaves and cut flowers. Very nice refreshments were served between 8 and 9 o’clock from small tables distributed about the rooms. Previous to the serving of the refreshments, remarks appropriate to the occasion were made by Mr. Oscar P. Miner, and afterwards Mrs. James Meager recited beautifully “The Golden Wedding”. A large cake brought form Syracuse by their son Mr. Alfred W. Meager had a cover of gold with the inscription in white, “Fifty Years”. The evening was passed socially, a feature being music, both vocal and instrumental, by several of the guests. Mr. & Mrs. Meager were the recipients of many presents, among them being $50. in gold, corresponding in number to their fifty years of wedded life. Hearty congratulations were offered when the guests departed, all wishing Mr. & Mrs. Meager many more years of wedded life, quite as happy as have been the past fifty years.

Nathaniel Meager was born is Buraton, Parish of St. Stephens, Saltash County, Cornwall, England April 14, 1822. His parents were James Meager and Catharine Stroude Meager. Valentina Heathman, daughter of John and Mary Heathman, was born April 4, 1828 in the Parish of Surton, County of Devon, England. They were united in marriage at Plymouth Church, England, October 6, 1846. They resided in England until 1872 when they came to America, and settled in Cortland, where they have since lived.

Mr. Meager’s father was a mason and builder, and the latter trade was learned by Nathaniel when young, and he has always made that his business. He was at one time for over two years in the service of Her Majesty, as ship joiner in Devenport dockyard near Plymouth. To Mr. & Mrs. Meager, eight children have all been born, all of whom are living. They are Mrs. Mary Stroude Meager Vosper of Saltash, England, Nathaniel P, Meager, Miss Valentina H. Meager of Cortland, John E. Meager of Syracuse, Mrs. Florence Ann Dickinson and Mrs. Emma Kenfield of Cortland, Alfred W. Meager of Syracuse and James Meager of Cortland.

Desiring to remove to America, Mr. Meager left England in the spring of 1872 and landed at the port of New York, March 16, 1872. From there he came to Binghamton and learning there that a great building boom was in progress at Cortland, he came here where he readily found employment at his trade. He liked the place so well that he decided to locate here permanently and accordingly Mrs. Meager, with six of the children, came to America September 22 of the same year, having been preceded in June by their oldest son, Nathaniel P. Meager, now one of Cortland’s most prominent contractors and builders. They have lived in Cortland ever since, having lived at their present residence, 16 Woodruff Street during the past 10 years.

Mr. Meager has lost few of English manners and customs by his life in the midst of America customs and institutions. Both he and Mrs. Meager enjoy the best of health and bid fair to live many more years in addition to their fifty years of wedded life. In common with the English people they are both very affable and jolly and are highly respected by all who know them. Mr. Meager points with a great deal of pride to the fact that for thirty-eight years before coming to this country he was a bell ringer in twenty-seven different churches in England. He was once called upon to ring 5,040 changes, the most that can be rang on six bells, in St. Stephens’ church, Plymouth, where he was the treble man.

A characteristic of both branches of the family is their uniform good health and long lives, the parents of both Mr. & Mrs. Meager living to be near ninety years of age.
Snook Family of Six Reunited After Separation of 48 Years (1926)

Snook Article, The Post-Standard, Syracuse, NY, Sunday, January 31, 1926 (re-typed below, as originally written)

Snook Family of Six Reunited After Separation of 48 Years

Three Sons and Three Daughters of Snook Couple Meet in Syracuse, were all born in Oswego County and reunite in Syracuse

Brother Bill comes from Far West (Grand Junction, Mesa, Colorado), One Sister from New England

Forty-eight years ago there lived in the rustic hamlet of Stewart’s Corner, Oswego County, the six strong sons and daughters of Freeman Snook and Lydia (Soule), his wife.
Time swept the happy family far apart. Mother and father died. Young Bill went west – into the great unknown of the west, and no letters came. John and Milo went to Syracuse where new industries were rising to call young men from the farm. Alice married and moved to Syracuse. Christina and Lottie married and moved away. Time droned away the years. And yesterday, three gray old ladies and three gray old men, they met again. They met in the home of Milo, the eldest, who is 79 and lives at 701 Willis Avenue, but for the brothers and sisters the dwelling was the farmhouse where they lived together in the far-way buttercup-bloom of their youth. They sat and looked at each other, remembering. After a long time speech came. They talked and clung to each other. Bill was back from the west, Bill who had gone away so long ago. Bill, who all had feared, was scalped these many years.

Wrote Seven Years Ago - At last seven years ago a questioning letter from the west had reached his brother’s house in Syracuse. Joyous to have found each other the trio wrote a renewal of their childhood vows of brotherhood.
Then came a day, less that a month ago, when Brother John wrote Brother Bill that Brother Milo “is in a bad way”. Brother Bill answered: “I’m coming east,” and came.
And here he found the other five with Milo, who was nearly well again from joy.

The six with ages and addresses are:
Milo J. Snook, 79, of 701 Willis Avenue, Syracuse.
Mrs. Christina Carter, 77, of Amesbury, Massachusetts.
Mrs. Alice Fargo, 75 of 515 Cannon Street, Syracuse.
William Snook, 73, of De Beque, Colorado.
John Snook, 71 of 189 Mayar Street, Syracuse.
Mrs. Lottie Peacock, 69, of Pennellville, Oswego County, NY

All but one has passed the 70+ mark, but they were young with a flush as of youth again at the reunion. Christina has come from her home in Massachusetts and coming to Syracuse has meant a journey for sister Lottie too, but brother Bill, the Young Lochinvar come out of the west, has traveled farthest for the twilight tryst.

Knows West of Years Ago - Bill talks quietly, telling of Indians and animals and bronco-busting and the punching of cows on the plains when men were rawhide. His sister and brothers listen thinking, “What a fine strong young-looking man Bill is – and how much he has seen.” “Why these young cow-punchers of the west these days,” says Bill in laughing scorn, “They stop at the big hotels now and wear white shirts. When we punched cows on the old prairies we didn’t have any shirts.” His sister shivered when Brother Bill showed a bullet wound in his left wrist and remarked laconically, “Redskin – Ambush,” then pointed a leathery finger at the side of his neck and explained, “Mormon.”
“Ye see,” he added, “the Mormons didn’t like us felleers around very much in those days and one day near Salt Lake City one of ‘em hit me in the neck with a little .22. I felt somethin’ kinda burn back there and pulled it out. “Huh, says I, “what’s the use of shootin’ a man with that thing!”

Meets His First Indian - There were memories of Indians skirmishes and rifle-battles with skulking horse-thieves, back in those 1880’s, but the one Brother Bill told best was the tale of the first Indian he ever saw. “I was sittin” one day,’ he said with his eyes on the far-off past and a blue little twinkle in them, “just sitten” eatin my lunch. I’d been cutting poles all morning and I had a big load of “em on my wagon a little ways away with my ax a-leaning up against it. “I was thinking of Indians. The night before they’d killed a man and a woman and three kids a little ways down the crick. The Utes was on the war-path.
“I was thinking those things when I feel something light-like on my shoulder and turning quick I see a big tall Indian, all painted up, just standing there with a kind of red skin grin on his face. “I was scared white, and if I’d had my ax there I’d “a” cut him in two if I could. But my ax was a hundred foot away and he was just looking at me.
White Boy Heap Scairt. “After a while he says, “Woof, white boy heap scairt, heh? And he wasn’t lyin’ none either.” Brother Bill concluded abruptly with a smile that meant no bloodshed. Bill is reticent as the old west but his brothers and sisters soon learned the story of those 48 years; How Bill had gone to Canada from the farm and then started for Colorado with a shipment of horses; how he trapped and hunted in the mountains around Denver where the Ute and the Crow, the silver-tip grizzly and the mountain desperado made life but a dangerous gamble; how he roamed to Utah in the heyday of the Mormons; returned to run a store at Grand Junction, Colorado, a frontier town on the new railroad, and how he finally settled down on the 160-acre farm in De Beque where he lives now with his family and his beloved horses.

Daughter Champion Cow-Girl - His daughter, Miss Idella Snook, was the champion cow-girl of the state one year, Brother Bill’s brothers and sisters learned, and she and his two sons have had numerous offers to enter the movies to make films of the wild west. But the father knew and loved the real wild west and they refused to take part in an imitation. William Snook had been married before he went west, and has several children in Syracuse and vicinity who had been lost to him all their lives. It was after their mother’s death that their father went west.
“Coming back to Syracuse is like a dream,” exclaimed Brother Bill, shaking his head as Rip Van Winkle may have shaken his. “I wouldn’t recognize a thing. All the old town is gone. All this is new.” “Are you going to stay here?” he was asked. Emphatically he made reply, “I wouldn’t stay here if you gave me the city. I’m going back west again.”

Others Have Things To Tell - Brother bill’s was the most picturesque career, but all the old people had many things to tell. Milo is a factory foreman and John a shipper. Both have lived in Syracuse most of their adult lives. Their sisters too had much to tell, the facts of six lives which time has so strangely thrust apart to reunite in the twilight of their ages. Around the six-were gathered at the little reunion their children and grandchildren, for many of their offspring and descendants live in Syracuse or near.

It was the fist time the six had met in 48 years – yes, and the last in life, they knew, for Bill goes west again and they are old.

Obituary and Story - Mary Jane Young Snook, 09 Dec 1901

Obituary and Story - Mary Jane Young Snook, 09 Dec 1901
Newspaper – Oswego Daily Palladium, Thursday Evening, 26 December 1901

The brief obituary states “Mary Jane Snooks died on Thursday morning, December 9th, age fifty-one years. Funeral was held on Saturday last at the M. E. church; burial at Hillside cemetery.”

Mary Jane Young Snook is my great grandmother. She was born 1851 in Hastings, Oswego County, NY and married Judge Snook, son of Freeman and Lydia “Soule” Snook, approximately 1874. They had four children over the next five years. Then, abruptly it appears; Judge Snook left the area and removed to Colorado in 1879 or 1880. Once in Colorado, Judge Snook changed his name to William T. Snook, married a second time (Clara Zillah Park) and had several more children. They lived in Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado.

Mary Jane Snook must have been a special lady having lived the trials and tribulations of life she faced with robust courage, maturity and lots of hard work, no doubt. She managed to raise four children, all of which matured to adulthood, married and had families of their own. They were Georgia Snook VanAuken, Josephine Snook Pickard, Freeman M. Snook and Mary "Mamie" VanAuken. I descend from Freeman M. Snook.

Mary Jane Young Snook appears to be the youngest of five children born to Godfrey and Mary Ann “Yorton” Young. They were all born in Hastings, Oswego County, NY according to the federal census of 1850 and 1860. It is an interesting fact that Mary Jane lost her father at a young age, as well. According to an article that appeared in the Oswego Times & Journal on Wednesday, 26 May 1856, her father Godfrey Young, a cooper by trade, was engaged in a swamp in Central Square getting out hoop timber. The article states he felled a black ash tree which resulted in a fatal accident, crushing Mr. Young. He lived only a few hours after the untimely accident. Unfortunately, this left Mary Jane’s mother (Mary Ann Yorton Young) with a large family of children to raise.

Mary Jane Snook is buried in Hillside cemetery, Central Square, Hastings, NY along side her mother and father.

It is not clear what motivated Judge Snook to leave his young wife and children so abruptly and remove to Colorado; however whatever it was must have been a serious matter. My Aunt, Arlene Louise Snook Morrison, told my mother and me that Judge Snook had “gotten another woman pregnant”. My grandmother (wife of Freeman M Snook, son of Mary Jane) had told Aunt Arlene this. We have heard other stories as well - which pertain to horse thieving, possibly shooting and killing someone. It could well be a combination of all three. What makes the latter difficult for me to accept is the lack of any newspaper article on such an incident, or at least I have been unable to find any.

God bless Mary Jane Young Snook!

This Snook family resided in both Oswego and Onondaga Counties. The Freeman Snook that was Mary Jane Snook’s father-in-law was born 1818 and spent most of his life in Clay, Onondaga County, NY. He died in 1884 and is buried (with wife, Lydia) in Pine Plains (Euclid) Cemetery, Town of Clay, NY. His father is buried there as well, John Snook, 1790 – 1869. It is a mystery where John Snook came from and if this Snook family is somehow related to the Snook(s) of Manlius. If any one has knowledge of this, please contact me. Thank you, Richard Wheeler
Whiting Sweeting was hanged for the murder of Darius Quimby

Whiting Sweeting is my wife’s 4th Great Grand Uncle and the subject of enormous interest and controversy. Whiting Sweeting was born 05 Aug 1764, Norton, Bristol County, MA and the son of Lewis & Abiah “Cobb” Sweeting.

On Aug. 26, 1791, Whiting Sweeting of Stephentown, Rensselaer County, N.Y., was hanged for the murder of Albany County Constable Darius Quimby who was killed Jan. 3, 1791, while attempting to make an arrest on a warrant for theft. Sweeting was tried and convicted in the New York State Supreme Court of Judicature during the July 1791 term. He was executed the following month.

The mystery to me is why most accounts of this event specify that Whiting Sweeting was wanted on a Warrant for TRESPASSING and why it is said that Darius Quimby was SHOT.

My review of the Book, “the narrative of Whiting Sweeting”, did reveal in court testimony a warrant for Sweeting’s arrest, but it was for the THEFT of an iron kettle, not trespassing, as indicated most everywhere he is referenced on the internet. Further, the book revealed that Sweeting was involved in an altercation with Darius Quimby (and others in the posse) while trying to escape their capture. The court records denote that when Sweeting jumped off a rock, while trying to escape, he fell down with one of his pursuers (Darius Quimby). It seems he accidently stabbed him with the knife he had been wielding is his defense (while again, the internet sites states he shot Darius Quimby).

It is a mystery to me why these anomalies are stated when a quick review of the facts is available.

There is another Book - Pillars of Salt, Monuments of Grace, by Daniel A. Cohen; section on Whiting Sweeting, an Evangelical Insurgent (which is more readily available in libraries and book stores). This book reveals a possible miscarriage of justice surrounding this entire case and is also an interesting read.

What seems to make this such a legendary event is the fact that Constable Quimby's name is the earliest dated entry on the NYS Police Officers Memorial in Albany. Constable Quimby is the first known law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty in the United States of America, as depicted on his “The Officer Down Memorial Page” at: “http://www.odmp.org/officer/16907-constable-darius-quimby”. Furthermore, for the reasons pointed out in the Book - Pillars of Salt, Monuments of Grace, it seems this litigation is a frequently studied case in the law schools in America as an example of the early American Justice.

My research indicates he had a wife, Sarah Kilbourne and one daughter, Abiah Sweeting. She married Jessie Worden, b 14 Oct 1781, Petersburgh, Rensselaer County, NY in 1808, Manlius, Onondaga County, NY.

If anyone knows of other children, I would appreciate being informed. Thank you. Richard Wheeler
I am trying to locate a Floyd Nathan FOSTER. I am trying to assist my mother in law in locating his grave. She grew up in a sad environment and was raised by a sibling and she would like to pay respects to him. She had a stroke so her memory of things is boggled. I may have located his SSDI as death was in Syracuse, NY and the SSDI lists a Floyd FOSTER who died in Nov 1967. I tried to view on ancestry.com but cannot locate the image of obit. Any help is greatly appreciated and if someone could do a obit lookup it would be beyond appreciated. Thank you
