From Jerry Matthews:
According to Frederick's petition for US Citizenship, he was born in 1797. He arrived in the United States in 1836 and he was a resident of the United States on 10 June 1836. He filed his declaration and intention to become a US Citizen on 20 January 1848 and was sworn in on 12 August 1851.
Frederick Mathews worked in the New York area. He was joined by his brother Henry Augustus in 1840. They worked in the New York area until the middle 1840s when they moved to Drakes Mills, Crawford County, Pennsylvania and purchased land there. This farm is still owned by one of Henry Augustus' decendants.
His signature appears to have the last name spelled Mattias but the citizenship petition lists his name as Mottis.
Frederick's birthplace has only been confirmed for the Kingdom of Hanover.
The earliest Crawford County courthouse real estate record for Frederick is a contract for 46 acres of land from Harm Jan Huidekoper (The Holland Land Company) on June 18, 1847.
