orphanages at that time were like the foster care system of today in that most of the orphans had at least 1 parent, but lacked the means , monetarily or otherwise to care for the kids. my grandfather and sibs were placed in an orphanage by the society for prevention of cruelty to children when their father abandoned the family and the mother had to work. she had to pay a stipend to the orphanage so they wouldnt be adopted out.
