Amy, Did you ever find the 1855 Niagara census? I'm looking too and did not see it. Did you try looking in the other towns? I had trouble with the 1865 census link because it had 1875 lumped in and made it painful to scroll through!
Thanks,
Andrea Zlotucha Kozub
Public Archaeology Facility Project Director

PS - I'm looking for Isaiah Griffen (Griffin) who may have been a hotel keeper in 1855.

1900 census has a Hykel Fadel in Lawrence, Mass married to a Louisa for 9 years. 1907 directory says Hykel had removed to Niagra. So I assumed she died.
Because she was born in Syria, of course there would be no records. Even with all the news articles and pictures in
Old Fulton Papers, not once did it mention her maiden name.
I even found Hykel's first wife in Mass and her maiden name.

Only thing I can suggest is to send for Mary's social security app. When filling it out parents names are asked for so with some luck they will be there.
My elusive Preuster family...many variations on spelling!!

I am hoping somebody can help me with any information on the Preuster surname (preferably mine:)). Unfortunately, what knowledge I do have is vague and questionable at best. Antoine Preuster (abt 1820-abt 1880) and Johanna Fredericka Preuster (abt 1822-?) immigrated about 1855. However, I don't know to what port, U.S.? Canada? I believe they owned the "Colt House" sometime in the 1860's to ?. This house is listed as an historic place, 1018 Ontario Avenue, Niagara Falls. It was built for/by Isaac Colt Jr. in a Greek Style. He willed it to his son, Leander, who in turn sold it to my Preuster's. It also is known to be a part of the Underground Railroad. Their daughter, Minnie Preuster (1863-1907), married Walter Brock Scott (1862-1921). I do know they lived in Niagara Falls. They had a daughter, Hattie Scott (1884-1975) who married Albert L. Brown (1884-1966) and at some point, moved to Bridgeport, CT. where they lived out the remainder of their days. Among their children was my grandfather, Curtice Walter Brown (1908-1990). He married Lillian Basca (1908-?) and they lived in Bridgeport, CT until retiring in Laconia, NH. These are my father's parents. I am trying to find out as much as possible about his family for him. Anything would be most appreciated!!

I am looking for information on Catherine Brady who married Patrick Oates in 1859 in Lockport. Based on census records, I have her born about 1839 somewhere in Ireland. She died sometime before 1892 and after 1880. Based on census records, I believe that she had a brother named Peter. There are Brady families living near Catherine and Patrick on the Lockport censuses, but I have no information on how they are connected. Any assistance on her family and her birth/death would be appreciated. Thanks!

Their children were Luther, Achsah, Lovina, James, Abijah, Phebe, Mary and Joseph, all born between 1780 and 1803.

If you are a descendant of one of these children, did you ever wonder where their birthdates came from? I am, and I do. In 1969, with the publication of the two volumn Edson books, they were not named and no dates were given. Immediately after that publication their names and dates were known. Why? What came to the surface in that time that changed the known facts? If you have any ideas, please share them, as I have not found this new source yet, and I really want to know. Paul

I am trying to determine the dates that my 4th great grandparents passed away.

Joel Graves Porter and Cordelia (Armstrong) Porter were married in Vermont in 1826. By 1840 they were living in Newfane NY.

The last record I can find for them is the 1880 census, where they are both living on their son George's farm in Newfane. Joel was 76 and Cordelia was 72. Neither of them are in the 1900 census.

Since the 1890 census is gone, that leaves a possible twenty year span where they could have passed.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks,

Mark Martin
