I am looking for marriage information on William H.W. Burn and Elizabeth Schilling circa 1884-85 in New York City. Elizabeth lived in Manhattan at the time of the 1880 Census. William is said to be born in NYC. William was born about 1856/57, and Elizabeth was born in Quebec about 1864-67.

Yes, yes, yes!!! I would love to know more about your great grandfather and his work! Last year I was gifted with family portraits taken in NYC and Brooklyn, NY around the turn of the century. The portraits were undated and the subjects unidentified, but the photographer's name was clearly printed on each portrait frame. I have attempted to match the NYC residence of a family member with a local photographer in an attempt to identify the person in the portrait. I am most appreciative of any information you can share about your great grandfather. Would it help in any way if I shared the portrait I am trying to identify?

Claes Wilhelm Bjorkander ["John William Burkander"}, between 1883-1886
Greetings! We have been searching for the death of g-g-g-uncle Claes Wilhelm Bjorkander for about a year. We have now found his son leaving an orphanage in NYC in 1886, and because of other info we have, we think that places the death of Claes Wilhelm Bjorkander between 1883-1886 in Manhattan. He arrived in the US from Sweden in 1880. Tho we have found no name change for CWB, his son's 1903 marriage license identifies his father as "John William Burkander," so maybe the father went by that. This death is too early for any of the indices we know about. Does anyone have a suggestion? "Bjorkander," by the way, was often misspelled.
[Son was Carl Theofron Bjorkander, who became Charles Burkaknder Wilson in 1901. Claes W was born in 1842 in Hassle, Sweden.]

Don't necessarily have to have a death cert, though that would be nice, but would like to get the correct death info.
Siblings would be Caroline Bjorkander Parsons in NYC... CW's wife and children, except for one, had all died in Sweden when he left for America in 1880.

Please have a blessed day and enjoy successful searching.
Thanks!

Jeannie

Trying to locate any information listing MATHEW HEADRICK (if that’s the actual name – he was also listed as Anthony on his son’s marriage certificate ). I cannot find his death certificate -- died between 1883 (last child born) and 1900. I have no idea what year he was born. He immigrated from Germany, again, no year.

His wife was MARY SCHELLENBAUM b. 1846 m. 1877 (according to census info). Cannot find any marriage certificate. She is listed on 1900 census as widowed. She immigrated from France in 1964. (lots of info on her)

A son, Stephen Headrick born 1878. I cannot find the census of 1880 listing any of them.

Mary Schellenbaum was buried with her brother’s family when she died in 1929. Mathew Headrick was not listed for that cemetery.

Any help verifying Mathew Headrick would be great!! Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Hello. When I used that book at the NYPL, at the end of any particular marriage entry it gives a source number and page number. If you then go to that page and look up the source number it shows you the Reverand who performed the ceremony and the church where it took place.

New York City Methodist Marriages 1785 to 1893
Vol. 2; Index to Grooms
By William S. Fischer, 1994
Picton Press, Camden Maine.

Perhaps a library in your general area has a copy of the books.

I believe the original records are held by the New-York Historical Society.

Could someone pls help me in finding a Charles Paul Rubin in the 1910 & 1920 Census. I have his WWI Draft Reg Card listing him as born August 12, 1881. Residence 206 West 188th Street. He is single and becomes married to Roberta Keys on August 26, 1920 in Manhattan. Charles P. Rubin list nearest relative as Mrs. A. Jocobs of 409 Decatur St. (can't make out next two words). In 1930 he is listing in Yonkers, Westerchester County with wife and three male children. I'm having a heck of time trying to locate him. I believe he is listed as the child of Samuel Rubin b. March 1836 and Mary in the 1900 Census of Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much. Sincerely, Barbara A.
Where did you get the impression that he was at that address for "quite awhile?"

From the available information, it would appear that he was there between April 27, 1942 (his WWII Draft Registration) and September 14, 1942 (his naturalization petition).

Do you have any evidence to the contrary?

Also, while this same petition indicates that he has been in the country since his arrival on July 4, 1921, he has been in New York State only since May 1932.

The address in 1930 is in ED 200; he is not there.
===================================
For death cert information, I suggest the following series from the Family History Library:
Index to deaths, New York City, 1888-1965
All boroughs 1947-1951 - Film 1324925
All boroughs 1952-1956 - Film 1324926

However, actually obtaining a post-1949 cert might be a bit dicey.

Thank you BobNY. I will write and ask them about early records. My gggrandmother had her baby baptised there in 1852. I do have a copy of an extract that was included in my ancestors Civil War records but it is almost illegible.
So I know it existed at one time.

Appreciate your help.

Susan

I have a relative that I am trying to research in NYC but don't even know where to start because it is so big an area and it overwhelms me. My relative was living on Ave A in 1942 (according to his military registration card), and I have been told he died in NYC about 1950-1953. He had an unusal name Theodor Dosenczuk so there could be MANY misspelling in the records. I want to find his death records, 1930 census and an obituary. Where would I begin to look?

My ancestor was born in South Hylton, Bishopwearmouth, Durham, England 1836 before civil registration began and have been unable to find his birth record abd do not know if he also had the name Charles but went by the name Havelock. Havelock married Agnes Stewart in Gateshead, England in 1860. Charles married Elizabeth McLaughry in Manhattan, New York, New York June 13. 1880. I would like to know if these two people are one and the same person and if there are any descendants. Havelock Hodgson was a police officer in England.

1939 envelope sent to Gustave RAY in Renens, Switzerland from an M REY (or RAY) of Manhattan

I recently found a photograph of an old envelope that was sent to Gustave RAY of Renens, Switzerland from an M REY (or RAY) of Manhattan in 1939. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on Renens, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page), or click on the link below. I am unable to find an M REY (or RAY) at 124 West 16th Street, Manhattan and wondered if someone more familiar with Manhattan can find him/her. I believe that Renens may be his/her or his/her parents' birthplace and this envelope will be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable at the philgen website) and have started the philgen website.

Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=form&am...

I am trying to find out any death information about Stanley/stanislaw Jaksina. His home in 1920 was Manhattan Assembly District 3, New York, New York (Hell's Kitchen). Emigration year approximately 1895. He passed away sometime between 1920 and 1930.

He was born approximately 1870 in Poland, wife of Anna Pazik Jaksina. Children as of the 1920 Census:

Alexander Jaksina 15
Stanley Jaksina 13
Helen Jaksina 4
Regina Jaksina 11
Peter Jaksina 8

I am at a bit of a dead end finding out any death or burial info. Any help about research this, or info about Polish people in the Hell's Kitchen area circa 1920 would be great.

Help with death records - Alexander Jaksina abt. 1928 and Stanley Jaksina

I am seeking help finding any death info regarding two brothers who lived in Manhattan in the early 1900's.

From research, I believe Alexander Jaksina died in 1928. He was born in 1904 to Anna Pazik and Stanislaus Jaksina.

His brother, Joseph Jaksina, likely died between 1910 to 1920. It is likely he drowned.

Any help is appreciated!

I am looking for any info about a funeral home by the name of Jos. Pawloski (sp?), Inc. that appears to have been at 405 W. 40th St. in 1928.

I was hoping to perhaps find out what years it may have operated or to find the accurate spelling of the name.

Thank you for any help!
