Have just found a way to solve my own problem and thought it might help others.

Using Family Search, New York, Marriages, 1686-1980, searched marriages for Manhattan, 1879 with no names. Looked for a date in August and found a relevant FHL film #. Then searched by film number to get the range of dates on that roll.
