I've found my great grandfather and his siblings in the 1870 census, both the June and December. I can't find a street listed. On the June census there is a house number of 248. Their mother died in January so I suppose the children were put in the foundling/orphan home?? I can't find a paper trail for them. I have spent all day looking for an address for the Wards Island hospital or foundling home or orphan asylum. I have seen comments in books and articles that the enumerator wasn't very careful and that's a fact! The two census don't match names, ages are not even close and spelling is very creative. The handwriting is clear enough; it's not transcription error.
Does anyone know how I could track the house number 248 in Wards Island in 1870?
