I'm not aware of any orphanage in Hempstead around that time. I do know there was an orphanage in Mineola, New York. It was called, I believe, "The Children's Home". Mineola and Hempstead are only a handful of miles apart, so that may be your answer. As far as a birth certificate, that may take a little hunting. Do you have any idea where he was born?

My great grandfather was raised in a Catholic orphanage in New York. On his SS card application, he says he is from Hempstead. Where can I find a list of orphanages there or near there? I Googled it but was unsuccessful.
He was born in 1914 and escaped from the orphanage around 1929-1930. His name was Frank "Francis" Powell. He was Sicilian. I would LOVE to find a birth certificate for him.
Thank you for any help you can provide!

Walter Swanson" and he died in Nassau County on 9 Dec. 1973.

(Was in the 11 Dec 1973 issue of Newsday, Page 28.)

Image of obit attached here.

His father's name was Carl Swanson too. The son Carl Swanson said he was Carl Swanson the fourth. They moved out of New Hyde Park circa 1961. any connection?

Hi,

I'm a history graduate student currently doing research on displaced orphans who arrived in the US after World War II. I've found a file on Emilie Kovacic who arrived in the US in March 1951 under the care of the United States Committee for the Care of European Children that pertains to her emigration here. It might not be the same Emilie Kovacic as these files don't quite correspond (I have it that she was born in Yugoslavia, expelled to Austria in 1945 with her foster parents, and ultimately emigrated to the US). But if you are interested in this information, do let me know.

I can give you some information about the Floral Park Nursing Home, or, as it was in the first half of the 20th century, the Floral Park Sanatorium. My father was born there in 1924, and I presently live just a few blocks from where it stood on the south side of Jericho Turnpike, just west of Little Neck Parkway. The site is now occupied by the Floral Park Motel and a Kentucky Fried Chicken.
It was a maternity hospital when my father and your relatives were born there. At one time it probably had been a private home. It was a wood frame structure with a mansard-type roof. I know it was used as a nursing home in the 1960s, because my grandmother stayed there for a while. I don't remember when the building was torn down.
My father was able to get a copy of his birth certificate at the Floral Park town hall. If you're looking for birth certificates, they should be able to help you.

GGreen523.

If you take a look at the census records, they all actually show that George L Marsh was born in New York, not Connecticut. He was born in February 1864.

In multiple census records his mother Louise/Louisa Dahl/Dehl resides with him also. She was born May 1846 in England, and appears widowed on every census I have seen. Although I did see one census, Louisa and her son were living with her sister and family.

I already replied to the other message re: Elizabeth. However I havent placed her definately yet. I do know there was another Elizabeth Moulton born c1868/1870 to parents Henry P Moulton and Mary Ann Senior. Perhaps worth looking into, to see if they are one and the same after all.

Melissa

Scott-Van Dyke marriage, N.Y. or Conn., late 1700s

Peter V. Scott, born in 1802, is my 3great-grandfather. I believe the V. stands for Van Dyke and was probably a maiden name of Peter's mother or grandmother. Peter lived in the Stamford-Greenwich area of Connecticut and is buried in the Baptist Cemetery in Glenville, Conn. on the border with Rye, N.Y. This leaves me to speculate Peter's parents and grandparents either lived in Fairfield County, Conn., Westchester County, N.Y., or perhaps on Long Island and were part of the Scott migration to southwest Connecticut.

Is anyone researching the Scott or Van Dyke name have such a marriage in their tree? If so, I would enjoy hearing from you.

Steve

Can anyone please suggest any online searchable databases that might help to establish if the addresss shown on the port entry form was an accomodation address or was the proposed actual home address?
The date of entry to the USA was 1952.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.
