I know your post is very old, but perhaps you're still looking. I've suspected that Samuel Crane was the brother of my great-great-great-grandfather Philander Crane. My Philander Crane was born in New York about 1816, and he also moved to Fayette/Gorham, Fulton County, Ohio, in about 1837... it would make sense if the two men were related and moved together. There's also the fact that Samuel named one of his sons Philander. Two of my Philander's sons were named Eugene and Edward.
I don't have any confirmation of this hunch, though, or information on parents of either man. Just thought I'd reach out in case you found anything more.
P.S. I've come across records for your family while researching mine. Some detail in case it's useful to you: Samuel Crane's son Jefferson Philander Crane fought and died in the Civil War; his Civil War pension index file says he was killed in Alabama on July 14, 1862, and he is buried in Pleasant View cemetery in Fayette (there's a record of military headstones that lists him as Philander Crane and shows the same death date).
