Our family tradition has these four generations of Cadys:
Palmer Cady, b. 4 Jul 1748 Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut. Died in Canaan, Columbia, New York. Married Rebecca Reed bet 1764 and 1780
Ela Cady, born 1781, Canaan, Columbia, New York. Died 1843, probably somewhere in New York. Married Elizabeth Waterman bet 1797 and 1812
Alexander Hamilton Cady, born 8 Dec 1812 in Canaan, Columbia, New York. Died 18 Aug 1849 in Irondiquoit, Monroe, New York. Married Fannie Hotchkiss (or Hotchkin, Hotchkins) bet 1831 and 1835.
The widow Cady and her six children lived in and around Irondiquoit for some time.
George Waterman Cady, born 16 Sep 1837 in Port Gibson, Wayne, New York. Died 9 Sep 1913 in Lawrence, Douglas, Kansas. Married Ada Zimmerman on 14 Mar 1881.
I have not been able to find Alexander Hamilton Cady in any published record. I have been able to find just one Ela Cady, but he is the son of Oliver, who was Palmer's brother. The records say this Ela died young with no issue. Some possibilities:
1) Alexander lied about his last name.
2) Alexander lied about who his father's name.
3) Alexander was Ela's son, but Ela didn't want to recognize Alexander, so Alexander didn't make it into the published sources.
4) Our tradition is accurate but we have the wrong Palmer Cady. Ours is a different one, with different birth and death dates, and a different wife.
Does anyone have a solution to my puzzle ?
