The notice reads in it's entirety, "died Feb 3, 2002. Calling hours at Richard Keenan Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers please consider the American Cancer Society"

Nothing in the paper of Feb 4 or Feb 6th, and nothing in the Fairport paper available on www.fultonhistory.com.

There are a couple of Benzings buried in the Penfield Ny Oakwood Cemetery: [http://mcnygenealogy.com/cem/oakwood-1.htm]

Benzing Clifford 08/09/1977 1947 A Ashes, age 67. The ashes of Dorothy Benzing were also interred here on 8/4/1983.
Benzing Dorothy 08/04/1983 1947 A Ashes, age 76. Loc A shared with Clifford Benzing, DOI 1977

Have you tried contacting the funeral home to see what info, if any they will give you?

If you are interested in contacted them, they have two locations in the Rochester, NY area. There is also a website www.keenanFuneralHomes.com Let me know if you need
an address.

Don't know how much this helps, but you may be able to find
place of burial. I doubt that they will give you cause of death.

The cause of death is not always indicated by where donations are directed to in memory of the decased.

When my father passed away my mother requested donations to
the Cancer Society. He did not die from cancer.

Just what I was going to write: don't assume that because someone put a donation to the American Cancer Society that they died from cancer. They may have had a spouse or child who had cancer, or just liked the charity. When my grandmother died, we asked for donations in her name to the local food pantry, which happened to be run by the local Catholic Church -- not because she worked there, died of starvation, or was Catholic (none of which were true). It was because she was a great cook and loved feeding people.

Your best bet to find his cause of death is to get a copy of his death certificate.

Unfortunately, Rochester city newspaper obits tend to be very, very thin by most genealogical standards, and this trend goes way back. The papers in the 1800s seemed to be little more than sheets of advertisements, and very few people warranted obits. It got better by the 1920s or so, but even today, obits usually contain only age of death, names of immediate survivors (wife, children, occasionally names of living siblings) and time/location of the funeral. Sometimes they also contain burial information. They might occasionally add what a person did in life, fraternal organizations, or veteran status, but they never contain things like date of birth, where they were born, names of parents.

Even though for many years there were two papers (the Democrat & Chronicle and the Times-Union, which ran from 1918-1997), and obits were published in both papers, they were usually identical, right down to spelling errors. It's important to note that from about 1928 on, both papers were owned by the Gannett family, which explains why the obits tended to be the same.

The SSDI has: DAVID L BENZING (born) 11 Oct 1941 (died) 03 Feb 2002; the 1989 and 1999 Fairport directories show him living on Ayrault Rd. in Perinton (Fairport) with a wife Lynne.

pipl.com has: Lynne C BENZING, Jan 1951, 529 GARNSEY RD, FAIRPORT, NY. Googling her name yield pictures at http://wynar.thebotwins.com/JillB2.html, but there is no guarantee that this is the woman mentioned from Fairport, although the info on http://wynar.thebotwins.com/JillB.html would seem to lead in that direction. And then there is http://wynar.thebotwins.com/LynnB.html, which makes some pretty definite statements. And Googling his name shows http://www.patentlens.net/patentlens/search_ajax.cgi?patnum=..., which is a patent assignment to Kodak.

Good luck.
