Good Morning! During the years above, I believe there were several families living near each other who aided each other during troubles. Early fires have erased the records, but I am hoping someone has some information passed on by those who lived then.

The family names were: PEASE, NEWMAN, RALL/RULL/ROLL, (Jonah) DAVIS, and JEROME.

Did any of these families live near each other? I would be happy to learn any information that is still available. Thank you, Patricia

Does anyone know about the process for obtaining a complete Probate Packet(1839 will) from the Livingston Co. Surrogate Court in Geneseo? Are old packets archived onsite or off? Is there a fee for requesting/retrieving an old complete packet? Is there a wait for records to be retrieved? Do they still exist? Any help greatly appreciated. My ancestor, Daniel Richards,(ca 1774-1839) left an involved will that probably included many other papers in the complete probate packet. Would like to try to access it. But I do not live in New York State. Many thanks.

Your welcome; yes I would like to see a copy of that will.
Thanks for sharing your discoveries. I think that's what I like most about the hunt for family info, how the "little" pieces connect to more clues. I'd be happy to send you a copy of our Richards/Slaughter/Downer/Harris book in the near future, if you like.
- I've attached a photo of my father's (Earl) grandmother (Effie). My father was buried next to her in 2005 (looking back I wish I would taken a lot of photos while i was there, as I saw the graves of many Harris, Slaughter, Downer, Shaw etc. In the attached photo; I'm told the youngest boy is my grandfather Bertie Richards, perhaps you can identify them.
- Also attached a piece of our book, about Effie (who we refer to as Granda Shaw). These and many more photos of "your cousins" are on my (richards family) ancestry page. Thanks again, I'm enjoying this.
Don

Thank you too for filling in some holes and sharing. It is always fun to connect with distant cousins. What I have on Benjamin F. is this: I found Luella, Albert and Betsy Richards in Winnebago county, Illinois. I think they died there. Price Albert, their oldest son dies in McAlester, Oklahoma. Your Burton had 10 children (I think) with his wife Effie Alice Downer, all pretty much died in Minnesota. I found much of this information online at usgenwebarchives.net at Hubbard Minnesota site. I would be very interested in your Slaughter information and any other findings you may have in the future. I also have the will of Capt. Daniel Richards if you would like a copy. I could send you a digital copy via e-mail if that works for you if you would like to send me your e-mail?

Thank you so much!
Kelli

Thanks for the follow-up, Here is all I know about:
Benjamin F. (I believe the F is for Franklin) Richards
Born 1812
Married Polly C Warren (daughter of Pliny Waren)
Died 1880 (I believe he died in Greenbank Co, Iowa)

I decended from his son Burton Fayette Richards
This family resided in and around Itasca and Hubbord county, Minnesota until around 1950's when several of the Richards moved to the Kelso and Longview WA area (many of the his decendants are devided between MN and WA state today).
We have some documented history of the Richards/Slaughter. Only recently I've became very interested in learnin more so I just learned of capt Daniel Richards.
We have a Richards family reunion every other year and a family member (fron the Slaughter Side) has document some info, but it all stopped at Benjamin Richards and Poll C (didn't have alot of internet options when she did this). So as I will keep digging and be happy to let you know what I find.
P.S. Pehaps when I get back to that family book it will have "a little" more information as well. Thanks
Don Richards

Thanks for the info here! I've been researching Burton C. Nichols recently, who is my 3rd great grandfather. I think you have Burton's father (Charles's) death wrong. In a newspaper obituary I found for Burton, it said his father died at age 66. So 1892 doesn't make sense if Burton was born in 1816, right? Where did you find the marriage date of 2/18/1840? I've seen other message boards connect Burton to a well-known reverend Charles Nichols who was a leader of the Tories, but I haven't been able to prove this myself. Any additional information/resources you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

When I received the will from Livingston County, New York historical society, they said they couldn't determine why he was called "capt".

Thanks for responding,
Kelli

Thank you Kathy for all that information you supplied it has certainly helped. I would very much appreciate a copy of the obit of John Greene if you wouldn't mind. I also was wondering if you knew anything else about Ruth Schrader. I'm wondering if you have any stories about her. What kind of person she was etc. I do know from Glady Barnes (nee Greene) that they didn't get along well and it was said that Ruthie stole the doll from Glady's home when she visited. Ruthie also "borrowed" a pretty set of dishes but never returned so there were unresolved issues. Why did Ruthie head out west and when? Did she go alone? I was also curious about your connection? I knew Gladys Barnes as she was my husband's maternal grandmother. She wasn't the easiest person to live with but I gather they all had a rather hard life. She died Mar 13, 2003 at St.Anne's nursing home in Roch. She had Alzheimers. Thank you again, and I look forward to hearing from you. Cheryl O'Reilly

Hello. I would suggest you contact the Livingston County Historian, at www.co.livingston.state.ny.us/historian.php.
I am looking for information on the lives of Ruth Green-Schrader b.1920 and Thelma Green-Derks b.1917. They have passed away and my side of the family knows very little about these two sisters. I am also hoping to find out when their parents died and where they were buried. The parents are John Edward Green b.1882,Avon and Jessie McNaughton b.1890 also of Avon,NY. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you for you time.

Karla,

Your post is really old but....There was a Col. James Wood that was commander of the 136th Volunteers (Nunda, New York)for the Civil War. I don't know if he's the James that was married to Clementine Watkins though. I'm looking for Wood's in that area. My line is Agnes Wood married James McComb both born in Ireland. Agnes Wood b 1823d 1897 James McComb b 1821. They are both buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, St. Helena Rd., Brooksgrove, New York. Brooksgrove is just outside of Nunda, New York. Hope this might be of some help to you. Let me know if you know anything about my line. Thanks, Noreen

I just saw your response you posted in 2009. Sorry.Do you have the newspaper article about Wesley's death? If not, I will dig it up for you. I also just found out there is a Benjamin Shader, who died at 2 years, 4 months buried with George M in College Cemetery in Lima, Livingston, NY. I think Mary and Mercy are the same person. I have Geo and Aurora's children as Wesley, Benjamin, and Mary (Mercy). If you have found anything different, please let me know. Thanks for your thoughts on Fanshaw(e). I was hoping to find something to help me with my own line thru Geo M's brother, David, but have come to a standstill.

Don't know if you are still looking for info on Burton C Nichols, but came across this while looking for my Nichol/s family in Livingston County: Burton born 8/3/1816 Bennington VT. Father, Charles (d. 1892); mother Mary Bristol; Grandfather James Nichols, clergyman Church of England came to America. Family moved to Bethany, Genesee Co. Burton married 2/18/1840 Charlotte Hallack. Her parents were John D Hallack and Sarah Bartholf. There is a little more info on page 325 in "Biographical review : this volume contains biographical sketches of the leading citizens of Livingston and Wyoming Counties, New York." Boston: Biographical Review Pub. Co., 1895 which I accessed through HeritageQuestOnLine.com

I have a large database of Livingston County NY deaths. If you post the name you are looking for (include middle name if you have it), I will see what I have in my records.
