Thank you very much for the information you posted for me.

I have followed the William Snyder Family after they left Lewis County and have entered records on my tree.

Dewitt Snyder married Cecelia Monaghan. I think Cecelia was the daughter of the sister of my grgrandfather-Patrick Cogan but I haven't proved it yet.

The Snyder Family definitely connects to my second cousin, though.

Thanks again

Kathy Coons

I have done a little Higby research and can offer the following. Keep in mind that most of this is presently unproven.
Lucy Higby Snyder died May 18, 1864 in West Turin, NY and is buried in Constableville Cemetery. The age at death is given as 47 years, 8 months, 20 days making her year of birth to be 1816. Buried in the same lot is a Matilda E. Snyder, represented as a daughter of Lucy & William Snyder. Her date of death is given as September 8, 1839 with her age given as 16. As you can easily see, something doesn't add up here. Perhaps the stone was worn and the numbers read incorrectly.
My records show that Lucy was a daughter of Daniel E. Higby, born 1767 in CT and Margaret Cone (her mother's name was taken from another Ancestry file and is completely unproven by me). Daniel and family are found in the 1810 census with the adult female being shown as being born between 1766 and 1784. They are not found in Lewis County in 1820 but appear again in 1830 with Daniel apparently now widowed. Daniel does not appear again after 1830.
I have found no burial location for either in Lewis County but that is not unusual given the years they apparently died.
William Snyder was apparently born in Saratoga County and returned there with some of their children after Lucy died. He appears to have remarried and had at least one other child, perhaps more. He died in 1899 in New Haven, CT while staying with his daughter, Agnes E. Grannis. He is buried in Saratoga County. I have not attempted to trace any of their children except as noted herein. I hope this is some help to you.

Hi

The Richards and Locke families were regular visitors to Number Four. Most of these visitors were from out of Lewis County and also out of State (Richards/Locke). These names were visitors during the late nineteenth century and early twentliest century. These two families stayed in the cottages owned by Orin Fenton. Later on they built beautiful camps of their own on nearby Beaver Lake.

Number Four was one of the oldest and best known Old Resort area's in the Town of Watson. The Fenton House built in 1826 by Orin Fenton was well known.

I know someone who has one of the older camps on Beaver Lake. They are out of Town and when they return I will ask if it was owned by a Richards or Locke.

The place owned by Henry Turck was a small hostelry that was used by guides and lumberjacks. Mr Turck was a Guide and much in demand by fisherman and hunters. This property was sold to Henry C. Schaab the father of Henry H. Schaab.

Leaving Lowville you will travel to the hamlet of Watson, keep on going and when you get to the Watson Inn you bear left and stay on the Number Four Road. You will go quite a way, going through Petries Corners- there is a church and cemetery there and a cute antique store but thats about it- next you will go through Crystaldale- its just the four corners of where the Erie Canal Road crosses the Number Four Road- just past there is Rusty P's bar then the Lowville Waterworks is on the other side of the road just a bit. Another mile and you will be passing one of the oldest Fish and Game Clubs in the state- The Lowville Fish and Game- if you see stands of plantation pine this club was well known for re-foresting a large amount of that area- at one time they even had a fish hatchery-(its fun to read about them in the old Journal and Republican newspapers- online-at northern NY library network- its free to search) You will go a bit further and maybe see signs for Crystal Lake or Crystal Lake Road- keep on going.....
When you get to a Y in the road with signs that say Stillwater (a right turn) then you are in the hamlet of Number Four.
Go straight at the Y and you will eventually run into a well known summer camp- Beaver Camp on Beaver Lake (I believe this is on property that was once the Turck-Bockenheim Hotel/Hunting/Guide Service)
Also at Number Four was the famous Fenton House, another hotel that catered to rich hunters or city families wanting a summer retreat.
The Patterson family from Ohio had a large tract of land up here and my husbands grandmother worked for them.
There are stories of Howard Hughes flying a plane up to Beaver Lake to spend some time in the area.
Old pictures of the Fenton House show open fields with the lake in the distance but today it is all grown up in forest- the Fenton House burned but I believe at the Y in the road you might find the old chimney still stands just off the road.- I think a Mr. Miller grew up there and if you would like to contact him I could see if I could find his information so you could contact him.
Also, I think there was a Number 3 settlement up towards Harrisville- so the large tracts of land were numbered...Number 4 just stuck as its name and probably a large part of Watson was part of Settlement Number 4?

The best way to get the vital record is to write to the town clerk of the town that the person was born/died in. You can get them from the state but it typically takes 9 - 12 months (if you get it at all). On the plus side, there are times when the town does not have the record, but the state does.

I have tried to find a website for obtaining a vital record in Lewis County...but I have been unsuccessful...so can anyone tell me if there is a website or if not, where to write for a death certificate and/or a birth certificate? I am searching for the Johnston family that lived in Martinsburg, New York from the mid-1800's until the early 1900's and am coming up against one brick wall after another...and feel the only way to figure out what I need to know is through the actual vital records, if I can find them. I have some information...but not everything to get the records, but I hope I have enough.

Thank you so much for your help...I am very grateful!!

Hello, I'm a "Non-Blood" Kin to this Family for My "Grandpa George" as I knew Him was Albert H. Allen Her Brother. He and My Grandma Grace Lillian (Dutcher) (Adamo) Allen had a Child name Sally Allen who is My Aunt by "Blood". I'm doing the Same thing for the Holidays and Trying to Find Her Father's Family Information. I grew up with a His Relatives and Never Knew It until Now. She lives in Oneida, New York.
She is married to a Alan Hall, Sr. My Grandma Grace is My Mother's Mother who was married to a Frederick Adamo who died before Her and Before I was Born (1965) which is Why I consider Albert H. Allen more My Grandpa. My Father Alton V. Royce was born in 1914 which made Him Older than My Grandparents Albert & Grace which is Funny to say Out Loud.(Ha,Ha) My Mom just turn 75 in June of this Year. The Older the People the less the People remember Them. My Royce Family was "LOST" by the World and I have been working to get the Information Back. Any Information on the Allen Family Tree will be a Great Help to fill in the Blanks for My Aunt for Her Grandchildren.

Thank you. I am now down to square one with James Henry ggrandfather. Close to where he married (1855) in Walworth Co. WI lived Alexander Henry son of Wm. and and Anna Alexander of Martinsburg. Thought he could have come out with one of them. James' marriage certificate gives mother as Mary Jane and father as Patrick and birth in Rochester, Death certificate says father William and mother (hard to read) Elisa?? , birth year 1826. Census dates vary from 1828 to1834. A constant is NY state. Census also gives parental origin as mother
English and father Irish. There are Henry's in adjacent counties Jefferson and Waukesa but cannot make a connection. Thank you again about "News". Any other suggestions? Diane

Lucretia Thompson died in 1974 at age 90 and was buried in Rural Cemetery, Adams, Jefferson County, New York. I found no mention of Merton J. Thompson after the 1930 census. I expect he died shortly thereafter and was probably buried in the Town of Worth, Jefferson County, or in Adams as was his widow.

I found this article while searching for a John Alley, of Lowville, NY..

Lowville. May 31 (1928)— There were only six Civil war veterans, members of the Guilford D. Bailey Post of Lowville, who were able to participate In the Memorial day parade here yesterday, while last year they numbered 13. Those to ride In the line of march this year were Commander
of ths Post Adam Wisner, Otto Zecher, Allen Jones, Jacob Williams, John Alley and Irving Ross.

Looking for info on John Alley. His wife was Lucreta Collins, who died in 1922, after family moved to Lowville (from Montaque, NY). He had a son, Fred Alley and 3 daughters that were living in 1922 (Nellie Hamblin, Ira Falling, and Lucreta Thompson).

Would anyone know when John Alley died and where he is buried? Another is trying to find his son-law, Merton J. Thompson, husband of daughter, Lucreta Alley Thompson.

In 1930, Merton is listed in St. Lawrence Hospital. Trying to figure out what happen to him.

tks in advance.

sheilah

I've been in touch with Linda Brouty Baxter who was able to accomplish this. I visited Jerden Falls back in 2003 with Gerald Baker and Diana town historian. I wanted to make the memorial, but couldn't get there. I would love a picture. Please email it to KRafferty6@nycap.rr.com. I'm glad so many people were interested in a little bit of history. Kristine

The main work to accomplish this was done by Linda Brouty Baxter from Croghan NY. Please see the Watertown newspaper about the dedication: http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/article/20120808/NEWS04/7...
I'm sorry I didn't respond earlier. I don't spend much time on the computer during the nice weather. My great grandparents are Daniel Baker & Susan Renaudin who lost 7 children within 2 weeks.

Thomas Bennett, updated 9.5.2012 grave located

I have a Thomas Bennett on the 1860 West Turin census aged 92 born 1768 Massachusetts. He is living with Henry Bennett age 53 and Minerva Bennett. Since he is 92 years old it is likely that he died in this area. He is found on earlier census items for the area also. His wife was Isabella Phelps. There could be other Bennetts buried in area. Name is also found as Bennet, Bennit, Bennitt. Any help greatly appreciated appreciated for him or any Bennett but I would particularly like death obit, sources, tombstone?

Thomas Bennett is listed with findagrave at memorial number 93643806. He is in the Constableville Cemetery and the findagrave work was done by CHerr. CHerr also helped locate and photographed Lydia Longley Bennett and Isabella Phelps Bennett who are in Saint Paul's Cemetery.
