HARRISVILLE - Herbert “Bert” Vrooman, 86, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Carthage Area Hospital.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 24th at 11:00 am in Garrison Cemetery, Pitcairn. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Herbert was born April 22, 1925 in Harrisville, the son of Harvey and Priscilla Hiscock Vrooman. He attended Harrisville schools and lived all his life in the Harrisville area.

Herbert married Evelyn McIntosh on October 4, 1964 at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church with Rev. Stanley E. Brown officiating. Evelyn passed away July 25, 2003.

Bert worked most of his life as a mechanic and truck driver for A.M. LaPlatney, Thompson Brothers, Harrisville Paper Mill, Drytaylor’s Garage, Milton Cowles, Sprague’s Garage, and Longyear Drilling Company.

Bert enjoyed working on cars and trucks, reading the daily newspaper, and spending time with his dog Storm.

Bert is survived by a son Gregory Vrooman and his companion Lanette Powe of Harrisville, a daughter Regina and Richard Shippee of Hailesboro, 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 brothers Harvey Vrooman Jr. of Allen, TX, Donald Vrooman of Harrisville, nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Harrisville Vol. Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
