Hello--I know this answer is years late, but I just saw your post. I am looking at the 1900 Census page in question. The handwriting that starts "Ind..." is, I believe, the word "inclusive" and goes with the notation (St. Joachim Hospital lines 51-83 inclusive), and it runs into the street name, "Stone St." The hospital's address was 218 Stone Street, Watertown. Details:

ST. JOACHIM'S HOSPITAL
218 Stone Street, Watertown

Established 1894; incorporated June 16, 1905
Governing body.— Board of Managers.— Sisters of Mercy.
President.-Mother M. Patricia Craven, Gabriels.
Secretary.— Sister M. Xavier Warde, Gabriels.
Treasurer.— Mother M. Stanislaus McCoy, Gabriels.
Superintendent.— Sister M. Scholastica Guinan.
Classes of services.— Medical, obstetrical, surgical.

Capacity, 76 beds (in public wards, 29; in private wards or rooms, 47); average number of patients during year, 66.

Hi...I know this is an old post, but I am just recently researching my mo ther's Allen family. My great- grandfather was a William Rytter/Rydner Allen, whose parents were Luther Allen and Catherine Moore(?). From my research, William Allen was born in New Jersey. He settled in Onarga, Illinois and married Sarah Soule. They had two sons: Willis Frank (my grandfather) and Luther. William died at a young age and Sarah and her two young sons moved to Kansas. Would love to know more about William and Catherine. I believe they are both buried in Onarga, Illinois.
Mary McCarty

Hello, perhaps Martin's death certificate lists his parents? According to the 1875 state census, he was born in Monroe county NY, but these records are not always accurate.

The New York Reformer of 1859 lists Martin's residence at that time as Lorraine, Jefferson, NY: "In Mannsville, by Rev. H. L. Grose, on Saturday evening, Mr. Martin Groff and Miss Alvira Tucker, both of Lorraine." ---per 13 Jan 1859 New York Reformer.

The 1900 census states his parents were born in Germany. I am afraid that is all I know about him. I am happy to exchange information...we are related twice, through the Lyon and Tucker lines.

Your Zaccheus Sanderson is the brother of Timothy Farrar Sanderson. And the son of William Sanderson Jr. b 1752 and Sarah Farrar b 1750.

That would make him the uncle of the John Sanderson mentioned in Patricia's post.
Thank you for your reply.

The entry you give is my entry from Find A Grave. Samuel Dustin was my 2nd great grandfather. That's as much as I know about him. His obit says he was from Rensselaer County but a professional could not find anything on him in that county so I'm hunting.

As my disclaimer states on Samuel's page, I am almost certain his parents were not Homer and Sarah Lockwood. I had him connected to them on Find A Grave but I disconnected them.

Thank you so much for your reply. I know I said that Mary Snider Lockwood was from Canada, but I was amazed that you mentioned Addington County, Ontario, until I saw that you looked at my entry for Samuel Dustin on Find A Grave. His obit states that he married Mary in Canada and I found Samuel and Mary and their 8 children on the 1861 Canadian Census in Addington County.

I'm also fairly well convinced that Homer was not Samuel's father but if you look at 99% on the entries on Ancestry, or virtually anywhere else, you will see that Samuel's name is listed as one Homer's children and Homer is listed as Samuel's father. I fell for that when I started genealogy but then I saw a copy of Homer's will and there's no mention of an heir named Samuel. Besides, except for the 1850 census which says N.Y., all of Homer's say Connecticut.

Since I don't know where in New York he was born I have entered my information in all of the counties. His obit did say he was from Rensselaer County but that is the only reference to it, and a professional for that county couldn't find anything.

I will look into Lyme, Jefferson County. Obits can be as wrong as I was.

Perhaps, but I am inclined to believe that entry was an error. Samuel is found in the 1820 census in Lyme with two sons under the age of ten. I believe they could have been Charles born 1816 and Samuel born 1817. The elder Samuel, his wife and daughter Amanda are found in Geauga County,
Ohio in a later census living next door to Charles and family. At that time, they all claim New York as birthplace. This is not very solid proof but gives the researcher something to work with.

While I can't offer any real evidence, I can tell you that a Samuel Lockwood family lived in the Town of Lyme, Jefferson County, New York as late as the 1850 census. The parents seem to be of approximately the right age to have had a son in 1817. Since your Samuel named his first son Samuel, there is a good possibility that was also his father's name. Addington County, Ontario is not far from the Town of Lyme and it is not a stretch imagining young Samuel venturing across the water to Canada and meeting his future wife. I looked at the Find-A-Grave posting for your Samuel and I am fairly well convinced that Homer Lockwood was not Samuel's father. Homer is found in Cayuga County, NY as early as 1820 and apparently stayed there for the rest of his life. There is no evidence he had a son named Samuel. The Town of Lyme has a family history center with extensive records. You may want to give them a try. It is located in Chaumont, NY. A google search for the Town Clerk should get you started. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I am the great-great-grandson of Alvira Groff of Adams, NY. I have researched my family back to Martin Groff (Alvira's husband). He was born around 1837-38 in NY. He joined the 10th regiment, NY Hvy Arty (Black River Brigade)during the Civil War, though he likely deserted shortly after enlisting. I am hoping you have some information on him (Martin). Ex: Exact Birthdate, his Parents names and their dates and places of birth. I am very stuck, could use some help if you have got the info.

Sorry I confused you. Edmund is the first Rice in Massachusetts in my own line in the 1600s.
Harlow is as far as I got back in some one else's Rice line.
Edmund maybe one of Harlow's ancesters but I couldn't get Harlow's line back any farther than him which was the reason for the query.

sab54:

Thank you for your reply and help!

I am in need of information starting about the time of their marriage (1817) and going back in time from there. I have no idea who the parents or siblings were of Sarah and I do have a clue as to the parents of Lemuel but not of his siblings. And some kind of documentation for their birth places would really be helpful.

Thanks again - Ann

In Warranty Deeds book 46, Page 417, can be found this transfer of property between Harriet McCreary (Grantor) and Martin Wallace (Grantee) dated December/September? 22, 1882.
The NW 1/2 of the SE 1/4, the S 1'2 of the S 1/2 of the E 1/2 of the NW 1/4, and the NE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 all in Section 8 Township 22 N - R 12E (100 acres) possession to be given to said grantee, ?? The said grantor shall have the privilege and it shall be her duty to remove before April 1st, 1883, the four bodies from the graves lying farthest south ?? said 20 acres.

This property previously belonged to Lemuel and Sarah Dewey - Harriet McCreary was a widow prior to 1882. Lemuel Dewey, died January 24, 1880 and was buried on the farm. Death records Volume 2 Page 43 and Sarah died March 27, 1882, death record Volume 4, Page 20 are they two of the four bodies and if so who are the other ones? Maybe Mr. McGreary is another. There seems to be no records of their removal.

Due to the fact that the bodies had to be removed by April 1, and the ground may have been frozen or covered with snow. It would seem that these bodies were never moved. This would be located on Ebbe Lake Road, just east of the intersection with Ware Road.
I'm looking for anyone who might have even the smallest information regarding Lemuel Dewey who was born 24 Jul 1796. The census has his birthplace as New York, Vermont, Canada. His death certificate has a birth place as Lower Canada. His parents appear to be a Charles and Axey Dewey. He enlisted in the War of 1812 at Champlain, New York. He married Sarah Groat 28 May 1817 at Western, Oneida, New York. They are found on the 1830 census in Lyme, Jefferson County, New York.

Any help will be very much appreciated.
Ann Gilmore
TGilm16545(at)aol(dot)com
Deming-Wadley connection 1800 Watertown

another researcher sent me info on a descendant of Joseph(Wadleigh) Waldley and Beda Glass. Joseph Wadley was an earlier settler of Watertown and being a Wadely descendant myself, I have been piecing the parts together. Joseph Wadley was from NH and settled in Watertown around 1800. He had about 10 kids, so to say..

I've recently learned of Luther Deming,(son of Abraham) b. 1764 CT -1856 and Sarah Crofott. Luther I am told, was married about 3 times. Anywho, Luther and Sarah had 3 children and settled in Watertown around 1800. Son of Luther, Luther Jr. married Sally Wadley, dau of Joseph Wadley. Not sure how long who stayed where, but Luther Jr. and Sally Wadley had about 14 kids, most I think born in Watertown. So hoping to exchange stories from others related.. All info is from the Deming Family Book : Genealogy and descendant of John Deming of CT; published in 1904 by Judson Deming,

1. Sarah Wadleigh was born on Nov. 2, 1792 in New Hampshire and died in 1872. She was the daughter of Joseph Waleigh (early settler of Watertown, NY) and Beda Glass. She married Luther Deming, Jr. in 1813 in Watertown, NY. Luther, son of Luther Deming, Sr. and Sarah Crofoot, was born in 1792 and died in 1846 in Galena, ILL.

Shortly after settling in NY, the family spelled the name : WADLEY

Children of Sarah Wadleigh and Luther Deming, Jr.
i.	2.	Joseph Wadley Deming was born in 1818 in Watertown, NY and died in 1896.
ii.	3.	Luther Deming, III was born in 1822 in Watertown, NY and died on an unknown date.
iii.	4.	Thomas Deming was born in 1827 in Mansfield, NY and died in 1885.
iv.	5.	George Washingtn Deming was born in 1831.
v.	6.	Chester Martin Deming was born in 1835.
vi.	7.	Giles Deming was born in 1814 and died in 1849.
vii.	8.	Norman Deming was born in 1815 and died in 1831.
viii.	9.	Roxy Deming was born in 1817 and died in 1866 in Taberg, NY.
ix.	10.	Nathaniel Deming was born in 1820 and died on an unknown date.
x.	11.	Elizabeth Deming was born in 1824 and died in 1890 in Great Valley, NY.
xi.	12.	Eunice Jane Deming was born in 1829.
xii.	13.	Lyman Deming was born in 1833 and died in Anderson Prison.
xiii.	14.	Mary Ann Deming.

Will try to do lookup in book if needed..

sheilah

Thank you for all the information you have sent. I do believe John's brother is Peter and it may be that the two brothers married two Boyer sisters, Nancy and Catherine. I went to the Town of Lyme (Jefferson County) Clerks office today. I have requested the death certificate/record for Margaret House Benson. I am hoping her mom is listed as Catherine Boyer. This is assuming a death certificate is found. So far no obituary is known and I searched the Watertown Daily Times. Thanks again!! I'll let you know if I find more solid leads.
Wonderful! Just Wonderful! Thanks for the quick reply. Your notes already give me confidence that Catherine was a Boyer and not a Pickard. I believe John's brother Peter House married Anna Boyer; the two stood up as witnesses at Ephraim's baptism (John's son). I also have Reuben's 1859 Gold Miner article and I have a Allegan County, Michigan, history article talking about Reuben House settling the lands there. The parents, John (1794 - 1860) and Catherine (1796 - 1888) both died in Theresa and are both buried in the Old Theresa Cemetery. I have both of their exact death dates.... John was listed in the 1860 mortality census as dying 19 January 1860. Catherine I have a small obituary on her, she died 17 February 1888. John and Catherine are my 4th Great Grandparents. My line is through their son Ephraim House (and Delila Klock); their son John H. House (and Mary Hunt); their son Fred House (and Margaret Jane Munro); their daughter Marion House (and Ernest LaClair); their son Henry LaClair (and my mom Beverly Deline). Margaret House, Reuben's sister, married Ephraim Benson in 1861. Ephraim Benson was previously married, his first wife Julia Colvin dying when a tree fell on her on 2 July 1859. In fact when Catherine House died in 1888, the funeral was held at the home of Ephraim and Margaret House Benson. In closing for today, per Rueben's Gold Miner story, he was the youngest of 7 boys and 4 sisters; I am missing two sons and a daughter. I have Charles (birth and death ?), Lucinda (1813 - 1887), John A. (1816 - ?), Ephraim (1818 - 1905), Moses (1822 - 1851), Catherine (1827 - 1895), Rueben (1831 - 1919) and Margaret (1835 - 1921). Many thanks, Tom LaClair, Clayton, Jefferson County, New York, tomlaclair624@yahoo.com. I live 15 miles from Theresa and the English Settlement Road and where John and Catherine first settled early in the year 1820.

Sheilah, it's April 2013, are you still on line? I am researching this same line. I am looking for Margaret House Benson's obituary. She died in 1921 at her daughters house. I am hoping her obituary shows her moms maiden name. Was it catherine Pickard or catherine Boyer. I believe Boyer.

V/r Tom LaClair, tomlaclair624@yahoo.com

These name identities point out that Asa Sherman is the grandson of Benoni Sherman and Margaret Havens of North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island. Benoni and Margaret had a kid named Lois Sherman who married David Bates. Here is what is known about Lowry Sherman: He married Hannah Matteson on September 7, 1761 in Coventry, Kent Co., RI and had a son named Nathan, who was born on December 18, 1762 in Coventry, Kent Co., Rhode Island. Captain Nathaniel Sherman’s son Benoni Sherman was honorably discharged from the service (during the War of 1812) at a camp near Brownsville, Kings Co., New York. Alpheus Sherman, son of Benoni was born on January 12, 1807 in Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY. Lois Sherman (Maitland) was born about 1804 in Oneida County, New York. She and her husband had a son named William Henry Maitland who was born in Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York on December 18, 1823.

Grandparents: Nathaniel Havens Sherman (d. 1826 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island) and Elizabeth Eldred (d. 3-24-1829 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., RI) Married: October 10, 1773 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island
Children: Asa (c.1774), Benoni (c.1775 to 1848 in Jefferson Co., IN), Nathaniel (c.1783 in RI to 5-17-1858 in Milton, Jefferson Co., IN), Elisha (c.1790)

Here is what is known about Captain Nathaniel Sherman and his descendants:
---He was a soldier in the Revolution. A "Havens' Sherman enlisted at Exeter, R. I. for three months Sept. 18, 1776 (R.I.V.R. p. 252) Captain Nathaniel Havens Sherman was in command of the 4th Company, North Kingston Regt., Rhode Island Militia in 1781 and 1783. (Civil & Military Records, Rhode Island Vol. 1 1647-1800 p. 404 for 1781 service and p. 422 for 1783.)
His will was badly damaged by fire. I have searched for years for information on this family and am still searching. It is possible that he is the one in Ballstown, Albany Co., New York in the Census of 1790. If so, at that time he had: 2 males over 16; 5 males under 16; 7 females over 16. F.D.S. 1685; R.I.V.R.: R.V.S.
---"The Ancestors and Descendants of Philip Shearman, the first secretary and recorder of the colony of Rhode Island" by Frank Dempster Sherman, 1908. She sent copies of several pages. It refers to his will, proved May 9, 1826, Wickford, RI. It is badly damaged by fire but talks of his wife Elizabeth; nephew Nathaniel, son of sister, Sarah, wife of Silas Sherman; John R Sherman; and the widow of the late Elijah Sherman. He is titled Captain in many references. ---He married Elizabeth Eldred on October 10, 1773 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., RI and had three known sons: Nathaniel, Elisha, and Benoni. Benoni Sherman was killed in 1848 in Jefferson Co., Indiana by a falling tree. Nathaniel Sherman died May 17, 1858 in Jefferson Co., Indiana. --Benoni Sherman who is the son of Captain Nathaniel Sherman, served in the War of 1812 in the 13th Brigade, New York detached militia from Sept. 14 to Nov. 1813. She references a newspaper article, evidently published in 1902, but with the year 1876 written in pencil, that says: "A Canaanite who has been with us for many years. Benjamin Sherman's interesting recollections.

Benjamin Sherman, who now resides at Canaan, Indiana, was born in Onondaga County, NY, November 4, 1815. He came with his father, Nathaniel Sherman, together with Benona Sherman, Elisha Sherman, Elder Leavitt and a Mr. Minor, to Indiana in the year, 1816. They came across the Allegheny Mountains in wagons to the headwaters of the Allegheny River, came down that river and Ohio River on flatboats and a party landed at the mouth of Eagle Hollow, Christmas Eve, 1816, with the exception of one of the party, who remained in Ohio for a while. Mr. Sherman's recollections of early times are vivid, and while not seeking notoriety, he talks freely of events in his early life. His early days were times of incessant and hard labor in Milton Twp. his father having built a hewed log house on the farm now occupied by Mr. John Sehrt.
Mr. Sherman was a good stone mason and hauled the stone to build the fence around the front of the Lawson farm. Much of this stone was gotten out of the creek bottom in water, waist deep. Mr Sherman would often break the ice in the creek and wade around all day hauling stone for weeks at a time, late in the fall and early winter. He says he has stood in the Ohio River at Madison from morning till night for three weeks at a time unloading rafts of lumber and putting it ashore, part of this time being between Christmas and New Years. In answer to the question whether this had injured his health, he said it had not. He said the best brand of whiskey could then be purchased for 25 cents a gallon.
Mr Sherman is now in his 88th year, is hale and hearty, goes to church every night, when meeting is in progress, reads the Courier without the aid of glasses, and is Jolly and full of fun. He has in his possession a flintrock rifle that his father carried in the war of 1812. He remembers when Governor Hendricks and his daughters rode horseback from Madison to Washington. Mr. Sherman has won fame as a weather prophet and it is declared by some that they will take his predictions for the next 24 hours, in preference to the official forecast from Washington for the same time."

Great grandparents: Benoni Sherman (7-7-1719 in N. Salem, Essex Co., MA) and Mary (d. 7-3-1681 in Warwick, Kent Co., RI)
Children: John (c.1620), James (c.1622), Meribah (later re-named Renewed) (c.1625)

From: Dean or Virgene Travis travis@digisys.net, Subject: JOHN SWEET info., Date: Mon, 23 Sep 1996 00:41:08 -0700: The following info. was compiled by a cousin who sent me all of her research. I haven't found a connection to my Sweets, but maybe this will help one of you. JOHN SWEET (of Salem, Mass and Providence, RI) b. c1585-90 England d. 1637 RI; m. July 3, 1632 Mary d. 1681. (She m. 2nd 1638 Ezekiel Holliman). John's land in Salem is described as bounding Mr. Skelton's land on the north, and near to Capt. Endicott's as of June 6, 1637. He was presented by the Grand Jury for shooting a wolf dog of Col. Endicott's in the yard of the latter, and was fined 5 pounds for the offense; subsequently the fine was remitted. The name of "Sweet's Cove" was given to an inlet near his residence. In 1637 he obtained a grant of land in Providence. This passed to Mary after his death. She returned to Salem and rec'd a land grant there the same year. After Mary m. Ezekiel Holliman, he changed the name of her dau. from Meribah to Renewed. JULY 1, 1639: Mrs. Holliman is alluded to in a letter from Rev. Hugh Peters of Salem, to the church at Dorchester. He says that she and certain others had "the great censure passed upon them in this our church," and that "they wholly refused to hear the church, denying it and all the churches in the Bay to be true churches." JULY 31, 1681: Ezekiel Holliman's will is proved. To son-in-law John Gereardy and dau. Renewed, his wife, both formerly of Warwick, now of Prudence [sic], all interest in house, lot, meadow and upland in Warwick. CHILDREN OF JOHN SWEET & MARY: JOHN SWEET, JR. JAMES SWEET, RENEWED SWEET. Renewed b. c1625 Salem, Mass?; d. aft 1681. m. John Gereardy d. aft 1681. They had 3 children: Mary, John, Phillis.

John SWEET (1), Family ID # 175 the immigrant ancestor, was born about 1598 or before since his son, James (3), was recorded as being born in 1622. John Married Mary (WESCOTT?). The records state that their children were born in Wales. They were doubtless of Welsh origin, and were the progenitors of the SWEETS of Warwick and Kings Town, Rhode Island. (Genealogies of Central New York, (Vol. 1, pg. 420.) In the book," Rhode Island Genealogies" pg. 911; it states that, John and James Sweet, brothers were of Welsh birth. It is well established that John SWEET (1), their father was a man of some years beyond youth when he arrived in America. John (1), is of record as of Salem, Massachusetts, as early as 1632 when his land there was referred to. He had a grant of land in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1637, in which year he died, and his widow then received a grant.
" Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island," pg. 195 reads; John SWEET was living 6 Jun. 1637, but died sometime during that year presumably before the land grant was official. Later in Salem, Mary, is called "WIDOW SWEET". It is possible that John SWEET never went to Providence, but died in Salem.
The following from a manuscript by CHAPLIN, (which is in the Historical Society of Rhode Island) states the land must have been granted to John SWEET (1) for his second son, James SWEET (3), in a deed dated 8 Nov. 1686 mention all right of land in Providence, as my father, John SWEET, was one of the first purchasers thereof. Mary (WESCOTT?) SWEET, widow of John SWEET (1), and their three children moved to Providence, Rhode Island and upon her eldest son, John SWEET (2), only eighteen years of age and James (3), two years younger fell the responsibility of providing for the family.
Mary, widow of John (1) married a second time the Rev. Ezekiel (HOLLIMAN) and after their marriage, her new husband changed her daughter's name from Maribah to Renewed. After the death of HOLLIMAN, 17 Sep. 1659, Mary SWEET HOLLIMAN returned to Salem where she died 31 July 1681. The death of John SWEET (1) and the subsequent marriage to Ezekiel (HOLLIMAN) doubtless hastened their removal to Warwick, known at the time as Shawmuch.
The Sweet family of Rhode Island is for the most part descendants of these two brothers, John (2) and James (3). They were among a list of persons received as inhabitants of Warwick, Rhode Island previous to 5 Jun. 1648. (Austin's Genealogical Dictionary). They and their descendants spread throughout the neighboring towns of East Greenwich, Coventry, Exeter, North Kingstown, South Kingstown, Warwick, Portsmouth and Prudence Island, Rhode Island, and there are still many living in these towns in Rhode Island today.
SOURCE: Salt Lake Library Film #0037237 "Sweets of Rhode Island Descendants of John SWEET".

Mary Greene (m. James Sweet)

Parents: John Greene Sr. (c.1597 in Gillingham, Dorsetshire Co., England.to 7-7-1659 in Warwick, Kent Co., RI) and Joan Tattershall (d. 1643 in prob. RI) Married: November 4, 1619 in St. Thomas, Salisbury, Wiltshire Co., England
Children: John (Bapt.8-15-1620), Peter (Bapt.3-10-1622), Richard (Bapt.3-25-1623), James (Bapt.6-21-1626), Thomas (Bapt.6-4-1628), Joan (Bapt.10-3-1630), Mary (Bapt.5-19-1633)

They came to Boston, Massachusetts on the ship “James” in 1635 and resided in Providence, Rhode Island until 1643.

Grandparents: Richard Greene
Children: Peter, Richard (d. 1617), Robert (d. 1650), Rebecca, Mary, Rachel, Anne (Bapt.8-31-1595), John (c.1597), Thomas (Bapt.5-13-1599 in Gillingham, England; buried 8-15-1599)

Great grandparents: Richard Greene (d. between 5-10-1606 and 5-3-1608 in Gillingham, Dorsetshire Co., England)
Children: Richard, Catherine

Richard2 Greene, second son of Robert Greene, succeeded to Bowridge Hill, on the death of his brother Peter. By his will, dated May 10, 1606, and proved May 3, 1608, he made bequests to his children and grandchildren, and appointed his "son and heir apparent, Richard Greene," his executor. As no record of his burial nor of the baptisms of his elder children is found in the Parish Register of Gillinghain, it is probable they were recorded in one of the hamlets of the parish where he resided prior to his succession to the estates of his elder brother (p. 36).

2 great grandparents: Robert Greene
Children: Peter (d. 1583; interred at Bowridge Hill), Richard, John, Alice, Anne (m. He was 42 y. grandmother was 41.
French descent.
I've been a "search angel" for 20 years. I have een to probate ct. in St.Lawrence Co. and have yet to find what I am looking for (another case f.a. b. Ogdensburg 3/14/57) but would love to actually FIND something useful there.
How well I know about those sealed records! AAARGH!

Hi

I would like you to add a little more information to clarify this request. Do you have any actual Date of Birth (DOB)? Would you know the locations was the Birth and Adoption both in Jefferson County NY. Was the 17 year old adopted or was the adoption at Birth. What year was her Birth? Adoption Records are sealed in NYS However sometimes one can locate information going in the back door through Guardianship Papers at Probate Court prior to the adoption. Any additional detail would help. Any Surnames available?
