Both Thomas and Samuel pre-empted land in Cascade Township, Olmsted County, Minnesota in the mid/late 1850's. Thomas took the SW 1/4 of section 35 on 1 Dec 1856, and Samuel took the NW 1/4 of section 26 on 10 Aug 1859. (According to the 1910 History of Olmsted County, Samuel made his initial claim in 1854.) A few years later Samuel sold that land and purchased another farm in Kalmar Township, just outside Byron, Minnesota.
Samuel and Laney had four children: Naomi, Harley, Annette (Nettie) and Roseltha, all of whom survived to adulthood, married, and had chilcdren. Samuel died in 1877, Laney in 1920. They and their children are buried in the Byron Cemetery.
