I found a letter sent to John (Ulrich) Herbst from Mrs. Herbst (in letter also names Theodore, Willey, Mom, Marie, family of Sinet and a baptism of Apollina Herbst) think husband and son of Mrs. Herbst, rest ? I think John was the RC clergyman of Morehouse. It was written in 1851 in French and some german words tossed in that I have not translated. It talks of miserable place of Morehouseville and how good that he has been promoted to Rome, NY. I don't know why my great grandmother had it in her trunk, except that her mother had been postmistress there. It had been sent to the German Catholic church in Rome NY. I am looking for more information, and will send you a copy if interested. Norma

Clare

HAPPY EASTER!!

I will try to tell you what I found. If you have any trouble following what I send let me know and I'll try to clear it up. I will be going to different sites for this information.

The first thing I did was to do a general search for Leona Plue on Ancestry by putting in her name and just the USA-no state. I only found two records. Your Leona Plue and another Leona Plue born in 1902 in Schoharie. I eliminated the one born in 1902.

I then did a general search for Leona Plue on www.familysearch.com and found this information--#6 down with an image-California County marriages. There is a marriage of Sammie B Rorick [born New York] to Violet E Hapgood on 29 Nov 1917. The parents of Sammie are listed as John C Rorick (born Iowa) and Leona Plue(b New York)
_____________________________________
Also on the familysearch site there is a marriage of Emma May Lahey to George Virgil in 1932 with Charles Hamner and Leona Plue listed as parents
_________________________________________

I then went back to Ancestry and did a general search for Sammie Rorick. I found his WW1 Registration card and found him in Los Angeles. He listed his birth as 16 Oct 1895 in Little Falls, New York.

I then searched the censuses and found Sammie
1900 living with grandparents in Iowa

1910 living in Oklahoma with David C Rorick and Leona F Rorick [age is wrong for your Leona but we all know the censuses are not always right] and grandparents

1920 living in California with grandparents-father-wife and son

1930 California

1940 California
_____________________________________
Now go to this site www.mocavo.com

Search in quotes

"Leona Plue"
There is a findagrave entry for her husband-Charles

Now search
"Leona Rorick"
4down-Page25
Entry for the death of a Leona Rorick
Leona Florence Rorick
d 17 Apr 1914
Siskiyou County California

I have no idea if this is your Leona-but its a shot. I found a site where I tried to see if I could get anymore infomation on her death but it was only an index listing it. I don't know anything about how you obtain death certificates in California or how much they charge for them. You might try to get one--Remember-a death certificate is only as good as the information the informant knows about the person--It may not list her
parents.
______________
Another thought is to try and get the birth record for Sammie Rorick in Little Falls. You could try the clerk in Little Falls and see if there is one for him. I know NYS charges #22. for one so I'm not sure if the village charges the same.
________________
You could also try posting on the Siskiyou county board in California for an Obit for Leona Florence Rorick who died in 1914.
__________________________________
Also-Sammie's father is listed as John C Rorick on his marriage and on the 1910 census David is listed as his father. I think John and David are brothers--Maybe Sammie was born to John and Leona and she later married David??? Don't know the answer to that. Maybe the 1910 census is wrong.
____________
Also GOOGLE in quotes
"Leona Plue"
Some entries that tie to your Hamner Family

Kathy
I have nothing but it is a possibility that she could have left when Hulda Hamner (Charles Edwards mother) died in 1899. All the kids were living with different relatives in 1900. But, according to one of my aunts I was told she left because of "the plague" that killed Charles and her 13 year old daughter Hulda (named after her grandmother.) my aunt told me she was afraid of catching it. That is the family lore. I would be thrilled to find her. You are being so kind. Thank you so much.

Leona's youngest daughter Harriet was with her Uncle Archie in Wyoming in 1900. He had visited Long Lake to see his mother Hulda when she was dying. I am thinking he took Harriet back with him to Wyoming in 1999 when Hulda passed away. Leona was probably gone and Hulda had her. All speculation.
Clare

Do you think she left immediately after the death of her husband?

I found something--Definitely not a absolute connection-but it may give you a lead to her.

It's just a theory on my part but it MAY be something you could check out

Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Wow,you are so far ahead of me! I want to correct something I first wrote to you. My great-grandmother Emma Hamner married Elvin's brother George Virgil (not Hamner) after my great grandfather Thomas Lahey died...I had typed in Hamner for some reason. He was so much older than her, too. So, this is all starting to make some sense. Also, Clara Rice (who married Emma's uncle William Hamner) raised my grandmother and in the 1910 census Effie and Elvin are living with Clara's parents James and Pauline Rice. These people seem to have all taken care of each other.
Thank you for finding Ida for me. You are really good at this.
Clare

Kathy,
Again, thank you! You may be right that Ida might have been married before Sherald. Elvin and Effie Virgil were in Long Lake in 1910 living as boarders with the Rice family. Ida was not with them and would have been 16 or 17 by then, possibly married and out of the house. She has been so elusive.
I so appreciate your help.
Clare

I am looking for information on Ida Hamner/Hanmer who was the youngest daughter of Charles Edward Hamner and Leona Plue. She was born in Wyoming, as was my great-grandmother Emma Hamner who married Thomas Lahey and lived in Long Lake. Ida married a man named Smith and lived in Crown Point. I can find nothing else about her or who raised her after her father's death.
Also, Leona Plue abandoned her family when Charles died in 1859 and I can find nothing else about her or where she went. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I am also the gg granddaughter of Daniel Northrup and Winnifred Bailey Northrup. I know very little about them. Their graves are in a nice little cemetery called Oak Land which is on the right side of the highway 371 just about 8 miles south of Brainerd,MN. It is just north of the wayside rest there. They do not make certificates that old at the historic courthouse. They told me to just look in the books for the information. I went next door to the history center and museum in Brainerd. They are going to send an obit to me. I haven't gotten it yet. The machine was busy when I was there. I live about 4 hours south. I think they would send one if you contacted them. Their daughter, Eliza Josephine Flansburg, who was married to Peter D. Flansburg lived near St. Mathias, MN and are both buried in a small cem. near the town of Ft. Ripley.

My thought is that the 1731 date for Nathan's wife is incorrect and was confused w/ the Abigail Olmsted, Jabez's dau. whose b.d. was known as 1731.
In my research, I haven't seen a b.d. or age for Nathan's wife, Abigail, assigned to her during her life time. They are all done later & based on the belief that she was the dau. of Jabez. Her death date is wrapped in controversy as well. I believe it was 1833, not 1838, which was the date needed to qualify for a widow's pension. She d. in the local poor house with no chn. or family looking after her and no age recorded. In the pension application by Tilly & the Ainsworth descendants, no birth date or age is given.
There are other family births that weren't recorded in the Brookfield Town recs. that occurred there. I think that Abigail's origins remain a mystery. I am hoping that there may be something in Jeremiah's probate/estate recs., if they exist, or land deeds. I'm still looking for some proof. The search goes on. I'll post anything that I find. Thanks for your help and interest. Appreciatively, Marsha

Thanks, again, Anita. I appreciate your input. I think this is one of those unsolved family history mysteries. I guess I will have to try to follow Abigail Olmstead & her children more intently to see if I can find a definitive indication of who her parents were. Given that 1) jabez's dau., Elizabeth, is known to have been married to a Smith, as listed in Jabez's 1753 will; 2) at Nathan's marr. in 1772 his wife is listed an Olmsted & not wid. Smith; 3) she would have been 8 yrs. older than Nathan; 4) she died in 1833, which, if b. in 1731, would make her 102, I don't think it likely that Jabez's dau. is the Abigail Olmsted who m. Nathan Hamilton. Based on the facts that Jeremiah was the only Olmsted who I have found still living in Brookfield, MA in the 1770s & that Nathan Hamilton's bd. is not listed in the Brookfield Vital Recs. (only a guess is given), because the Brookfield church records around that time were lost due to a dispute and split in the congregation ca 1738 [with a minister moving to CT], it is easy for me to believe that Abigail was more likely the dau. of Jeremiah. Hopefully some new doc. will be found that clarifies her parentage. One can always hope. Again, thanks for your info. & perspective. I'll post anything that I find that is more definitive about her origins. Marsha

I have not followed Abigail's line, so the only info I have for her is from The Genealogy of the Olmsted Family in America on page 397. Her birthdate is given as 24 Mar 1731.
The Brookfield Vital Records:168 gives her parents as Jabish (Jabez) and Thankful Omsted.
Jeremiah and Elizabeth Litten were married 6 Jan 1734 at Brookfield. An Abigail is not listed among their children.
Their first born was Jabez, who was born 29 Jul 1735.

Thanks, Anita, that all helps me...even if I haven't found the documentation for Abigail OLMSTED. Are you familiar w/ Carl Hommel's take on Abigail's parentage as being Jeremiah & Elizabeth OLMSTED? Do you know if he is the Jeremiah OLMSTED listed in the 1790 MA Census living in Great Barrington, Berkshire Co., MA, or do you know the listing to be a different Jeremiah? Carl Hommel lists a Jeremiah Olmsted who was b. 1762, who ended up in New Hope, VT. Thanks again, for your help. Marsha Hamilton.

Jabez Olmsted's will was dated 24 Feb 1752
Proved 22 Mar 1753 and his estate approved 10 Apr 1753

Anita

Carl, I've recently come across your posts about the parents of Abigail Olmsted/Olmstead, who m. Nathan Hamilton in Brookfield, MA ca Jan 1771. I also have found your newsletters about Jabez Olmsted/Olmstead. I've enjoyed reading them. Based on the Olmsted/Olmstead genealogy [OGFA] I have had Abagail as the dau. of Jabez & Thankful (Barnes) Olmsted, but I see that you have a different take on her parentage. You have her as the dau. of Jeremiah & Elizabeth (LITTEN) OLMSTED. Do you have a documented b.d. for their dau. Abigail/Abagail? Is she mentioned in her father's will? I understand from reading your website info. that Jabez's will, his dau. is listed as Abigail SMITH (m. Benoni SMITH). Do you have any further information separating these Jeremiah OLMSTEDs and connecting Abigail w/ Jeremiah & Elizabeth? I've had a hard time finding any. I see that in the 1790 MA Census there is a Jeremiah Olmsted in Great Barrington, MA. Which Jeremiah is that? Thank you for any addition info. that you might provide. Ora was my greatgrandmother Electa's sister. Ora married first Edward Moulton, 2nd Joseph King. Some of the children of George Moulton a former resident of Indain Lake includes Edward, Henry, Charles (md Julia dau. of Hiram Bell), Anna (md William Eldridge).

Hi Terry, I see that this is a really older post, yet I thought I would see if I can respond to it anyway. I actually had someone answer a post of mine from 2000 so lets give it a go. You may by now have all this information.

James Keller and Ester G. Seaman are in my family tree. My Great great great grandmother is Christina Keller. James Keller is Christina's brother. James and Christina's parents are John Keller and Margaret Phillips. I haven't actually 100% confirmed that John Keller is the father, yet that is what I have found so far. The reason I can't confirm it is that he doesn't show up in any records after 1850 which is when we first find the family. Children of John and Margaret are: Hannah b 1824, Eva Eliza b 1826, Catherine b 1828, James b 1829, Abraham b 1833 and Christina b 1835.

From what I can gather I think John died young, as when we find Margaret and daughter Christina in the 1850 census for Newcomb, Essex, New York. Margaret is remarried to Elisha Bissell b 1809. Christina is the only child living with them. In 1860 Margaret living with Daughter Hannah and family still in Newcomb, Essex, New York. In the 1850 census sister Hannah is married to Charles Bissell, do not know how he is related to Elisha. I can't find Eva in the 1850 census. Catherine I can not find in the 1850 census, yet by 1860 she is married to Frances Smith and they are in Long Lake, Hamilton, New York.

James as you know marrieds Ester G. Seaman b 1832. I have searched for hours for him in the 1850 census, yet just haven't found a good match yet. In 1860 James and Ester are in Long Lake, Hamilton, New York, and then end up in Olmstead, Minnesota. I have all there information if you need it.

Last child Christina married Andrew Mulholland. They were in Long Lake, Hamilton, New York in 1860, then by 1870 were in Viola, Olmsted, Minnesota. This is my family.

Just let me know if this helped, and would love to find out how you fit in with this family.
Michelle

I found some information that MAY be the right family.

I think that Katherine Simons was married to Aaron Craig. Aaron Craig was married twice according to the 1910 census so some of his chldren are from his first marriage. He married Katherine about 1904. On the 1900 census his wife is listed as Hattie. He is the son of Washington and Margaret Simons Craig

1900 NYS Census Hamilton County Wells
CRAIG
Washington 60
Margaret 60
Aron 31
Hattie 32
Frank 6
Earl 3
Violet 4/12
________________
1905 Census Wells
CRAIG
Aaron 36
Kate 25
Earl 9
Violet 6
Eva 3
__________________
1910 Census Wells
CRAIG
Aaron 40
Kate 29
Frank 17
Earl 13
Violet 10
Eva 8
Lottie 4
Evelyn M 3
Clinton 2
Annie 2/12
______________________
1920 Census Fulton County Gloversville
CRAIG
Aaron 57
Earl 23
Mary E 28 Daughter-in-law
Violet 18
Lottie 15
Evelyn M 13
Clinton T 10
Irene A 9
Edward A 8
Wihelmina 6
____________________________________
On the 1910 Census it says that Kate has had 5 children.
I think William Wells who is credited as being born 1833 in Benson, Hamilton Co., New York is a son of this family. He came to Pierce County, Wisconsin before 1860 and died February 8, 1894 in River Falls. It doesn't seem like there is any other family he could be a part of. I can not find him in the 1850 census. From all of the census reports it looks like they had 9 children, 7 girls and two boys before 1840. I have more info on William Wells if you wish.
Dan Geister
Pierce County Historical Association
River Falls, Wisconsin

COREY - maybe we’re related My dad grew up in Gloversville NY so our hunt for family always brings us back to Fulton County. My great great great grandfather was John W. Corey(1793-abt 1860) he married Mary “Polly” (Travis) abt 1818. John was born in RI making a life for himself and his family in Northampton. Their son Abram T. Corey (1824-1897) and his wife Susan C. (Bates) are my great great grandparents they owned land in Hamilton & Saratoga Counties. From them we’re related through their son George E. Corey(1853-1931) and his second wife Sarah Jane (McDowell). I’m sure there are relatives out there related to the many sons and daughters of these unions. Related family names include Bates, Travis, Williams, McDowell, Van Heusen, Hillabrandt, Cowles, Houseman, Sanborn, Mosher, Howorth, Bissell, Manning, Grinnell, Brownell, Helpin just to name a few. If you think we could have a common ancestor we’d love to discuss it with you.
