John Simon/Simmons Born aprox 1856 New York

John Simon from Utica or Johnstown New York. Married Emma Selby Jennings at Saint Patrick's Church in Johnstown in 1879. Brother's were Peter and Nicholas(sp) and possibly an older sister named Mary. Parents possibly were Peter Simon(sp) and Johanna, might have been spelled Joanna, Neumann. Peter, his father, died about 1863 according to a document I have found. The document also states that after the parents death the three boys lived with the Christian Brothers in brooklyn, N.Y. Unsure if this is true or not.

John moved west and ended up in Oklahoma, where he passed away in 1926.

Attachments are information I have on him.

Any help would be much appreciated. I searched this area and see a few other people looking about 13 years ago but nothing came of it. Hopefully someone could shed light as to what happened to the parents.
Not any longer. I live in Oklahoma City now. I will be in NY to visit my brothers in July, and hope to do some research in Northville and Gloversville. I appreciate the work that has been done on the Conklin's, as it saves me time!

I did find Charles Davis at the Conklingville Cemetery, moved from when the lake was made, which is why I asked. I've been trying to find Hosea Davis for ages, and finally found HIM in Granville, VT.

I have been searching for a few years now for information on my own family history, and came across some interesting facts concerning the Conklins (my paternal Grandmother was Leona). Previously, you had stated that you could not find grave sites for some of 'our' ancestors. Did you try Conklingville Cememtary? bodies from 7 different cememtaries were put there when the flooded the valley.

I am very interested in the WELLS family, particularily James Wells Jr. ... my brick wall is James Wells b: 13 Mar 1792. I recently found that he was in Madison Co., NY where he was drafted into the War of 1812 serving 3-1/2 months. You mentioned the 1811 probate of James Wells Sr will .. do you have a copy that I might have?

My James married Persis EARLE in Dec 1810 in Windsor Co., VT. A male descendant was tested in the Wells Surname DNA Study and is part of W015 Wells DNA Family ... and have a common ancestor as Gov Thomas WELLES of Wethersfield, CT. I have been unable to find a connection nor any clues to James' parents or siblings. His first four children's names are: Francis James, James Fones, Clarissa Maria and Eunice K. they moved to Ohio about 1827.

Hi Jennifer,
My pleasure. These stones are very very old and have diminished faces on them. The one stone that sticks out is a very large stone lying flat with an indian head drawn free-handed, Abraham makes me think this was the first name of the person with this stone. Of course, this is from memory but it does ring a bell with the name Abraham Demerest. It is a very small cemetery and I do have that on my list of projects this summer.

I believe what you are talking about is the burying ground located just past the intersection of Route 30 and County Rd 155 on the north side. There is a historical marker there but it is a Dutch Reformed Church cemeetery not a Presbyterian Church. I have been there and have photographed the stones. Those photos however have been lost. I do plan on returning to make more photos. The cemetery sits behind a home so it is difficult to see from the road and you do have to go behind the house to reach the entrance to the cemetery

They are pictures of people we have not been able to identify, but we believe that they were friends of the family - other immigrants from Ireland living in Johnstown and Gloversville in the 1890s and later.
Were you ever able to find anything out about the records from the First Presbyterian Church?

My GGfather came over from Ireland as a young teenage orphan, and was reportedly sent to Gloversville. There were several prominent leather makers in town with the same surname (though no known relation), and I just recently found out that the minister of the 1st Presbyterian Church at the time came from the same town as my GGfather. Coincidence? I am am inclined to think not. The church may be one of the only sources of information available, and I was greatly saddened to see it had closed down last year.

Thanks!
Jim

No, I do not have my family on Ancestry. I did send the given names of my direct line to this list on 24 December 2010. Hope that you are still able to view it.

Would you share where the PLATTS family connects to which line in your tree? The DUTCHER surname sounds familiar to me, but I would have to pull out some files to see for certain.

Thanks you

Julia Ann McDougal Westfall McClary, 1822-1894?

Searching for info on Julia Ann McDougal Wesstfall McClary, who was b. Fulton Co. 1822, and supposedly d. there 10 Dec 1894.

She is the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Brunson) McDougal, who had 5 other children (including my husband's great great great grandfather) in Fulton Co. They moved to Wayne Co., NY, where they were in the 1850 Federal and 1855 state censuses, after which they moved to WI.

Julia was married, first, to John Westfall, and had 3 children (William, Samuel, and Mary), but she was widowed by the 1855 NYS census. In 1860 she is married to John McClary (listed as Mclarry in the 1860 census), but we cannot find her in any censuses after that (including the 1865 and 1875 NYS censuses). Either she died earlier than FamilySearch shows through their Family Data Collection-Individual Records, or she and John McClary divorced and she perhaps married again. (John McClary remarried and relocated to WI and then NE.)

Would someone be willing to check death records in Fulton Co. for Julia (also known as Ann)? I wanted to check the 1892 NYS census for her, but Fulton Co. is missing (at least on FamilySearch).

I am also trying to help Julia's great great great grandson because he and his brother are stumped about what actually happened to her.

Please feel free to e-mail me directly at mpike@rochester.rr.com. Thank you so much!

Melanie Pike

Hello,

This is a long shot at best but since I'm up against a wall, I thought I'd drop you a line about a Claus that I found in my research.

I've actually been looking for the ancestry of a Catherine CROUSE Wood. Catherine had three of her siblings write depositions on her behalf while applying for a Rev. War Pension from her husband's [Dr. Daniel Wood] military service. The siblings were attesting to her marriage in 1792 to Daniel Wood. One of those depositions was written by a Margaret [Crouse] CLAUS, she stated that she was 75 at the time of the deposition and a resident of Palatine. This would make her born ca 1768. The applicant, Catherine Crouse Wood would have been b. ca 1774, another deposition by a sister Gertrude Crouse Best [b. ca 1780] and a brother Jacob Crouse b. [ca 1782]. Catherine, Gertrude and Jacob were all residents of St. Johnsville at the time of these depositions, which was in 1843.

Any help or any clue of who may have information on any of these families would be greatly appreciated. One would think knowing the names and approx. birth years of these siblings that it'd be a piece of cake to put them into a family unit, but that's not been the case. Apparently no one has been looking for these people until now!

ken

Jennifer

It was not unusual to have private type homes called Poorhouses or resthomes run by individuals in this era. These residents were sometimes called inmates. Many elderly people living in them usually chose them near where their own homes were located and they were no longer able to work. Younger people could have some form of disability. Do you have a more specific location? I note the people running it (note under occupation)for Edward it states "Head" and list his wife as Sarah. Perhaps the name of the person you located living there has an Obit that would clarify why he was residing there.

Re: Resources on Irish in Johnstown and Gloversville?

My family was involved in the Irish emigration to Amsterdam, NY at that time period. While they arrived slightly earlier, they were actively recruiting ex-neighbors to emigrate during the peak period you mention.

This was the time that the linen trade was collapsing in Ireland. The Civil War had led to expansion and industrialization of major mills in Ireland. However the "embargo" on cotton trade to England by the North had led Britain to develop imports from Egypt which had much nicer cotton quality. Then, with the end of the war, the cotton trade never resumed with the South to the same extent and the plantations importing linen for clothing slaves was no longer an issue. Neither were linen Army uniforms needed.

Over production in Belfast led to bankruptcy of a large mill and several more perhaps then occurred. The references are a big vague here. However, industrialization was wrecking the draper/home weaver system. Home weavers could not compete, especially if they wove coarser linen. They received linen on beams ready for installing in their looms from drapers and had to give the finished weaving to their draper to sell. However, the growth of the cotton trade now meant the draper was competing with mill woven linen and with cotton goods that were more popular. During that linen boom time, many children had been able to stay in their hometowns as weavers and now needed to find better paying jobs. Emigration was traditional as the Irish generally practiced the rule that only the eldest son inherited the (rented) farm and possessions. You can inspect a few wills on the PRONI wills site to get an idea of conditions.

My folks recruited from the Knocknamuckley area for the carpet industry and the Chiney silk mills in CT recruited from Portadown. Look at the "Old Fulton Postcard " site with its newspapers to discover where the Irish glovers were from. Look at the individuals. Their birthplace would be mentioned in obituaries. I would then look at conditions in their ex-region. This won't be as hard as it seems. Marilyn Cohen and others explored the Tullylish area, but the glovers may not be from there. Tanned leather had been important in Ireland, but I think it died out very early as oak trees disappeared and the British laws stopped the trade. I doubt if the people were glovers in Ireland. If they were weavers originally, I would look at research on the Belfast linen mills. The few glovers I have noticed were women, so where did their husbands work? Did they have husbands as many Irish women had been abandonned or widowed and then had to work in mills. Also look at who were the emigrants who encouraged friends to emigrate? If you go back through Ellis Island, and the directories you can see who stayed with whom when they first arrived. This will help trace folks back to Ireland. I would expect a scattering of emigration locations at first and then a more concentrated region where most people came from.

I found that intermarriage was common among Irish immigrants who had known each other in Ireland and many were active in the Orange order. However, asking about culture is a problem as most of us don't think of ourselves as having a culture. My grandfather was pulled out of high school to go to work and other family members worked at age 14 on. My family was proud of not eating potatoes at every meal. We don't admit to having relatives in Australia as this implies they were were on the losing side, generally considered Catholic, in the 1798 rebellion. Being obviously of the Northern Irish Protestant culture and not the Irish Catholic culture was important in my family. Some folks claimed to be Scottish to avoid being considered Catholic Irish. Religion was very important and mothers had a lot of say in the family determining future occupations and marriage partners, but this may be part of the times and not Irish. Most of the cultural differences disappeared, so you will have to interview people to find what use to exist.

I have a few book on the linen trade in Ireland I can recommend. If you are looking at people are coming from the Amsterdam area, I can help you there but I am not familiar with the glovers.

I read your post under the Haggart family bible.

The information I have is:
Frederick Stuart Haggart (fifth gen): Born March 5, 1872 in Bainbridge, Ohio. Physician, graduated Cleveland University of Medicine and Surgery March 22, 1897.
Married Maude B Wildermuth, and moved to California about 1904. They had one son J. Llelyn Haggart. Llelyn married Virginia LeBrand and had one son Stuart Llelyn Haggart (my father). (Note: Llelyn is also spelled Lllelyn in this listing. My father’s birth certificate said Llelyn.)

The online listing shows James Daniel (fourth gen, Frederick’s father?), but I cannot find parents of Frederick Stuart anywhere. Is there any listing in the
family bible showing this lineage?

Frederick Stuart (5) Haggart
Frederick Stuart (5), James Daniel (4), Daniel (3), John (2), Daniel (1)

Any information would be much appreciated.

(Any interesting note: My grandmother divorced Llelyn about 1930 then remarried a few years later to Jack Wildermuth. Apparently, Virginia worked in Dr. Haggart’s office and Maude was quite fond of her. She pushed her to marry her son (my grandmother’s tale). My grandmother never
told me how she met and married Jack Wildermuth.)

Thanks,
Cynthia Haggart
Hello,

You may want to try searching the various childrens names at ( http://www.fultonhistory.com/fulton.html ). They have a huge collection of old newspapers online in PDF format, that are free to search. I have found many old obits and marrage announcments here. They have quite a few that date back to at least the 1890's. I did a quick search for Joseph Cole and got a few hits, most of which were in the Gloversville newspaper at the time. I used "the exact phrase" function but there are also others available.

Good Luck !

Cole Families Living in Broadalbin Area

I am researching Cole families who I believe lived in the Broadalbin area between 1787 and 1819. They are sons of Joseph Cole b. 1716, Kingstown R.I.. The sons were born in either Kingstown RI or Stonington CT. I am looking for any / all marriages, childbirth records, biographies, references of any kind to help me know more about their families. I am a novice when it comes to researching off the computer so looking for suggestions of what references to use. I have a Family History Library nearby. The sons I’m interested in are: Joseph Cole b. 1754, m. Hannah Collins, Sands James Cole b. 1760 m. Esther Grant, Benjamin Cole b. 1762 m. Mary Polly Cottrell (Bovee), John Cole b. 1764 m. Sarah Wells, and Isaac Cole (wife unknown). Wife of Benjamin (Mary Polly) was 2nd wife and I know he was previously married and had children by this first wife but do not know 1st wife’s name or name of children. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
