Obit. Lookup for Lucille Loucks - Jan. 23, 2000

Would someone please lookup an obit. for Lucille Loucks. I believe that she was formerly Lucille Jones. She died on Jan. 23, 2000 according to the SSDI online. Her residence was listed as Tonawanda, NY.
I believe her husband was Curtis Loucks.
The SSDI lists a Curtis Loucks of Buffalo, NY who died Mar. 1967. Is there an obit. index for that time period?

Thanks in advance!

Isabelle Dunnigan
William Henry b. Jan. 30, 1904 (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) d. June 1973
Margaret b. 1872/1873 - cannot find birth records - age estimate based on 1875 census
Francis Joseph b. Nov. 21, 1874 (St. Patrick's) d. Feb. 20, 1876 ("Cathedral")
William b. Jan. 19, 1877 (St. Patrick's) - cannot find his death

In the 1875 census Frank and Margaret are living as a family:
Frank age 28
Ellen age 22 wife
Edward 5 son
Margaret 2 & 3 mo. dau.
Frank 6 mo. son
William - not yet born

In the 1880 census we can no longer find Frank or Margaret - kids are as follows:
Edward - possibly at orphan home - can't confirm because of poor records
Maggie - age 9 "adopted" - living with her grandmother Ellen McDonnell (age 70)
Frank - deceased
William - age 3 "nephew" - living with Thomas & Julia Reiley nee McDonnell

We have theories on what happened to this family, but cannot confirm.
1 - Margaret died giving birth to their youngest son William. We have checked death records and church records (St. Brigid's/St. Patrick's), Holy Cross where baby Frank is buried - cannot find her death.
2 - He died and she remarried - thus we cannot find her with new name.
3 - Both Frank and Margaret died - why can't we find them?!

Never were able to find marriage of Frank & Ellen/Margaret nee McDonnell.

Went nine months before birth of first child Edward - around Dec. 1868 and checked St. Joseph's and St. Brigid's and could not find record. Maybe they were married when they came over?

Also, William was born in Jan. of 1877 but wasn't baptized until May - could support theory that mom died giving birth to him?

Ellen McDonnell b.1832 Ireland(1892 NY census)
son William McDonnell b.1853 NY
son Edward McDonnell b.1855 NY
daughter Ellen Margaret O'Brien b.1853 NY
daughter Julia Riley b.1857 NY
grandson Edward O'Brian b.1869 NY
grandson William O'Brian b.1876

Looking for connections to this family.

David J. Mahoney, State Supreme Court justice Dec. 16, 1928 -- July 5, 2008.(Local)(Obituary).
The Buffalo News (Buffalo, NY) (July 7, 2008): pB4. (529 words)
Show details

Full Text :COPYRIGHT 2008 The Buffalo News. All rights reserved. Reproduced with the permission of Thomson Scientific by Gale Group.

David J. Mahoney, retired State Supreme Court justice and pillar of the area legal community, died Saturday night in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga. He was 79.

A lifelong Buffalo resident, he earned his law degree from the University of Buffalo in 1952 and was admitted to the New York State Bar Association. He later was also licensed to the Florida Bar Association, the U.S. District Court Western District of New York, and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit.

After 40 years of private practice in the firm originally known as Lawless, Dare, Doerr and Offermann, Mr. Mahoney was elected to a spot on the State Supreme Court in 1993. He served until December 2004, when he turned 76, the maximum age for justices. After that, he was a judicial hearing officer until this year.

His son, David III, said that his father always felt obligated to give back to the larger picture. His father always brought home life lessons from his job.

"My dad impressed upon us that service to one another is where you go in life," David said.

He said his father never left Buffalo because of how much he enjoyed city life.

"He viewed the whole area as part of greater Buffalo. He felt a commitment to the city and didn't want to turn his back on it by leaving it."

Mr. Mahoney also was known for his talent in drawing. His humorous cartoons were published in the Bar Association of Erie County's Bar Bulletin for more than three decades.

Throughout the years, Mr. Mahoney also did plenty of pro-bono work for the voiceless in the community. Frank Mesiah, president of the Buffalo Chapter of the NAACP, said that Mr. Mahoney is one of the few who stand out to him who were always committed to civil rights. For years, Mahoney served as legal counsel to the NAACP, and was chairman of the state Bar Association's Committee on Civil Rights.

"We lost a very loyal, humane individual," Mesiah said. "He was just a warm human being."

Accolades from others in the legal community poured in Sunday.

His former law partner, Eugene F. Pigott Jr., now associate judge of the State Court of Appeals, said that Mahoney was a mentor to him when he started at his firm in 1978.

"He was our Atticus Finch," Piggott said.

And State Supreme Court Justice Gerald Whalen said in a statement, "I have known no finer man in this life. Dave Mahoney possessed a unique combination of warmth, intellect, integrity and compassion that enabled him to excel as a judge, lawyer, mentor and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him."

Mr. Mahoney also served on the board of directors of the Volunteers Lawyers Project of Buffalo and Alcoholism Services of Erie County, and was president of Neighborhood Legal Services Corp. He was physically active until a few weeks before his death.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Heidi Lyon, and three sons, David III, Neal and John.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon Wednesday in St. Joseph's Cathedral, 50 Franklin St.

I am still interested in any obituary or death notice that appeared in the Buffalo newspaper(s) for William R Blakley, who died on October 8, 1946.

He may have been a resident of Buffalo for only a few years. He was raised in Philadelphia PA and was in that area until the early 1940s. The funeral was held in Buffalo on October 11, 1946.

I am specifically interested to learn the name of his widow, the name of his surviving brother (who was noted in the Chester PA paper as being of Berlin NJ), and if his parents' names were mentioned.

I believe him to be the William R Blakley born in 1894 in Springdale, Allegheny Co, PA to an unknown Blakley and Elizabeth Holmes and subsequently raised by his mother and stepfather, Victor Refeld. He is believed to be the youngest of four children born to Elizabeth Holmes Blakley Refeld.

I am researching a Holmes family from Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA, of which Elizabeth is a member.
I was wondering if anyone had access to Buffalo directories for the years 1887-1889. I have only found directories that list middle/upper class residents. I am looking for a Joseph & Josephine Narducci. In the 1892 NY state census, they are listed in Buffalo 1st ward. I would greatly appreciate any info on this family.

Thank You!

Try castlegarden.org Type in al* john* and limit years to 1848 thru 1855, maybe put Ireland as country of origin. Sometimes Irish sailed to Le Havre,France to sail here.
* is used as wildcard.

good luck

You can try this via snail mail. I obtained numerous baptismal records from the 1910's thru 1930's. As an unexpected bonus documents also included confirmation dates and marriage dates for those married in Catholic churches in the greater Buffalo area.

Catholic Center
795 Main Street
Buffalo NY 14203
I would like to try to find any records related to the Alexander L. Johnston family known to be living in the Buffalo area sometime after 1880 (he appears in the 1900 census in Buffalo for the first time) until his death in 1913. Alexander was born in Ireland in 1836 and came to the U.S. in 1849/1850 according to census records. He was married twice and had 8 children. His first wife, Anna Millaux, died between 1868 and 1870 in Martinsburg, Lewis County, New York, leaving 4 young children. Alexander remarried around 1872 to Elvira (her maiden name is unknown). They had 4 children - Minnie, Maynard, Goldie and Everett. Anna Millaux had been married to Alexander's brother, who died at a very young age, so she then married Alexander and he raised his brother's 2 young children. I don't know the brother's name.

I am trying to trace this family's Ireland roots, but it is tough!! I have not been able to figure out what ship they came over on or what town they lived in in Ireland. I have not been able to figure out all of the names of Alexander's siblings.

I would like to try to find an obit for Alexander and maybe any probate records. I assume his 2nd wife, Elvira, died in Buffalo as well, but I am not sure.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

Thank you so much for your help!! Oh, I should mention that some census records show this family's last name as Johnson...I don't know if they originally spelled it without the "t" and added it once they came to America...but later, all family members used Johnston, not Johnson.

I don't know where to begin to thank you for this information. Since I was not sure of the date I did not want to ask anyone to look for a ten year time span and I just can't believe you took the time to do this. Thank you so very, very much for your time and effort, this information helps me because the I know the Franciszek Raczkowski is male and the F. Rackowski (83) from Beck St is Frank so I believe the Frances who died on 25 November is going to be my Frances. Again I just can't thank you enough for your help.
Jackie

I started with 1925 in the NY deaths list and discovered that a Franciszek Raczkowski died on 26 December 1925. I did not find a death notice in the News but, in the Deaths list there was F. Raczkowski, 83, 66 Beck St, Dec. 26. Since your Raczkowski would not have been 83, I checked from 1926 to 1930 and did not find any Buffalo Raczkowski deaths so I went to 1920 and forward. In 1923 there was a Henry Raczkowski who died in Buffalo on 24 May and THEN, in 1924, there was a Frances Raczkowski who died on 25 November. I did not find a death notice in the News from the 25 to the 29th. I seem to remember having communication with a group of volunteers who found death notices in a Polish newspaper which can be found at, I believe, the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society. I think the group would provide translations for a modest donation. Hopefully someone will read this and fill in the information
or, possibly, the Historical Society will know.
I'm sorry but I didn't find Joseph.
Sheila in Friendly Western New York

Buffalo Courier Express, Thursday, 27 November 1947, page 41..

Paul Bernard King
Word was received here yesterday of the death on Tuesday in New York City, of the celebrated artist, Paul Bernard King, 80.
Mr. King was a native of Buffalo and was a pupil of the Art Students League of Buffalo. From 1907 to 1921 he was active in Philadelphia art circles before moving to New York City.
One of his painting, Winter Woods, hangs in the Buffalo Athletic Club lounge. He also exhibited in the Albright Art Gallery here, and some of his works are on display in the National Gallery in Washington, and in galleries in Reading, Pa., Nashville, Tenn., and New Orleans. In 1923 he won the Altman Prize at the National Academy of Design.

Because the New York Times was also available I copied another obituary but it is rather long to type. Although I WILL type it if necessary I would rather ask my husband to make it into an attachment OR mail it to you.

He was buried in Philadephia. He was survived by his wife, Cornelia Bonnell Greene and a son, Paul Bernard King, Jr.

scs61@juno.com in Friendly Western New York
I just found this entry, and decided that, even tho it's the 1st and very late in the evening, I'd still write and ask. I have some LINK ancestors whose death dates I've never been able to pin down, and would LOVE to know what their obits said. They are:
Jacob Link, born 3 Dec 1810 in Germany, died in 1893 (according to the information I've been given), and
Anna Maria Strom Link, born 13 Aug 1813, same place, died 25 July 1900. Both died in Buffalo, and were living with their daughter, Maria Limberg. Maria's siblings were still alive as well, but my great grandmother, Catherine Link Herron, was unaware of her mother's death, and arrived too late to see her. They had a family portrait done at that time, so we see 5 of the surviving children of 6. These obits would be very precious to our family! Thanking you in advance: Myra Herron myraherron1@msn.com

How wonderful that you are going to be doing this. I'm sure you already know (but just in case someone doesn't)...if the exact date isn't known but you know the year (from 1914 to 1959) you can look at the Death Index microfiche films in the Grosvenor Room . From 1940 on you will have to ask for the Soundex number and find the name that way. Early 1940's films are very faded and can be hard to read. I have found Reader #12 to be the best for reading faded films. Bless you for your kindness.

Sheila in Friendly Western New York

Hi,

I'm Diana and I would appreciate it if you would look up an obit for James H. Riley. He died in Oct 1943 in Buffalo, NY. and was buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

This is my grandfather on my Mother's side.

Thank you and I it's not to late.

Diana in Wash

This is for Cynthia who asked about "DO". It is usually an abbreviation for "Ditto" so Country of Origin would be Prussia.

Sheila in Friendly Western New York

Hey Karen,

I have an etching done by Paul King. Its signed by Paul to my great Aunt Ida Rudoplph, and it says to cousin Ida. I assumed they were related by the signature but know nothing about the connection. Any information would be appreciated on Paul.

thx

Schmitty
