Jeremiah, I have more information gleaned from the Andes Cemetery records, I do not know if you already have this or not, but....According to the records of the inscription on the stone, Olive's date of death is not noted, which makes me wonder if she is still alive. Her date of birth is June 26, 1905. 5 years older than Charles...Recorded with their names is one of Violet Burrell Aitken, also with no death date, born Feb. 28, 1910. Then, there are the following Aitkens, possibly Olive's parents?: Margaret H. Aitken, Nov 16, 1870 - Apr, 19, 1949
James T. Aitken, Jan 3, 1867 - Dec 31, 1937.

Jeremiah, there is indeed an extremely knowledgeable historian in Andes, if you would send me a private email to my email address, I can share that name and contact info with you. gpierce@delhitel.net. Tell me what info you are seeking exactly about Charles and hopefully I can also help....Looking forward to hearing from you!
~~Gabrielle Pierce, Delaware County Historian

Did some searching as I was familiar with the Davis family of Andes. There is still a Davis Road off Dingle Hill. This place had a summer camp owned by my Aunt and Uncle. I did some searching on the Delware website but found nothing of Hannah.

Copied the following: Hezekiah DAVIS (*)
DEATH: 1798, Bovina, Delaware, NY [S107]
EVENT: ABT 1776, Revolutionary War [S88]
Military
TITLE: *
Family 1: [Widow] [DAVIS]

Frederick DAVIS
John DAVIS
You can search again for this name of the Delaware website or go direct to Links to Exterior Websites of Delaware County Families and then down to SoftBear's Delaware county roots. In the index is this Davis family.

Sorry, did not find any more

Jeremiah

Charles is buried in the Andes cemetery and I have been searching to find who his family comprises. I am related to James Wilson a Revolutionary soldier of Shavertown (now beneath cold clear water) and have the early family. There is also an Isaac Wilson of Colchester who does not seem to be related. Charles above was a WWII veteran according to the gravestone but so far my inquiries have not been answered. He married Olive Aitken. It is hard for this senior citizen to believe everyone has forgot about our soldiers when I used to know so many.

Jeremiah Palmer

If you are still there, would this Catharina "France" possibly be from Ulster County, baptized 20 May 1786, Town Of Montgomery, Ulster (now Orange) County, New York? This Catharina had as her oldest child, David Frantz, born 10 Jan 1808 before she was married. He was baptized at the same church as Catharina. She's the daughter of my G5GPs, Johann Jost Frantz and Cathrina Sinsabaugh (both Palatine descent).

Johann is covered in Henry Z Jones' book, "Even More Palatine Families" (95% sure, not 100% sure as I forgot to copy the title page), page 175. Unfortunately, he provides no genealogical information for Johann beyond suggesting that he MAY have arrived in the 1760s in Pennsylvania, but I'm not convinced that these are the same people.

Catharina and David's baptism records are found translated and transcribed into two books that vary somewhat in their translation details from Dutch:

"German Reformed Church of Montgomery, Orange, New York" [an early name for the church], by Kenneth Edward Hasbrouck, New Paltz, NY; unknown publisher; 1958; 375 pgs [typescript].

* Page 122: "Child: David French, Parents: Catherine French (Illegitimate), Birth date: 18 Jan 1808, Sponsors: Gost France & Catherine Synsepaugh".

"The Brick Church, Montgomery, N.Y." [a later name once it was rebuilt in brick], by Mrs. Jean D. Worden, Copyright 1982 Mrs. Jean D. Worden 8580 Chesire Ct. Franklin, Ohio 45005.

* Page 74: "Child: Catharina, Parents: Johan Jost Frans and Catharina Sinsebach", Baptized: 20 May 1786".

* Page 119: "Child: David France, Birth date: 10 Jan 1808, Parents: Catharine France, Illegitamate, Sponsers: Joost France & Catharine Synsepaugh".

Last one tonight. Inger Christine Hansen's birth record attached (second line, number 29). This lists her father's name as Hans Osmundssen (Norwegian names tend to be somewhat fluid), who would have been born about 1835 and her mother as Gunild Marie Christainsdatter, born about 1834.

Max

Also, birth date on that last note should obviously be 1808, not 1908.

Jakob Jenssen's birth record attached (first line). Between this record and the 1865 census it looks like his father Jens Tobias Torkelsen was born about 1908 and his mother Anne Marie Christiansdatter was born about 1826.

If you go to the site http://www.arkivverket.no/eng/Digitalarkivet, you can gin to the 1865 census in Vest-Agder, find the file for Lyngdal, and search for the family by first name, last name, etc.

Max
Jakob's father was Jens Tobias Torkelsen and Inger's father was Hans Ammundsen (line 16 on the attached).

Armed with that information, we should be able to find them with their families in the 1865 census.

Max

Let me see what I can find out.

Unfortunately, the Norma Jacobsen who came into NY in 1950 looks like a different one. This person also visited Norway in 1935 when she was 3 years old with father John and mother Julia but they lived in Bronxville (Westchester County), both in 1935 and 1950.

We might get lucky with headstones in Norway. There's a fairly good database there.

Max

Thank you max!

This is the information I have.

Johan Emanuel Jacobson born Jun 16, 1896 in Lyngdal, Norway and his family. I have his parents names and DOB but nothing further. I would like to know their DOD and final resting place and also their parents, etc. His(Johan) parents were Jakob Jensen born 1863 in Lyngdal, Vest-Ager, Norway. Johan's mother was Inger Christine (Hansen?) born 1864 in Liknaes, Norway. Other children of Jens and Inger ( all born in Lyngdal)were Hans B: 1890, Jens B: 1893 both who came to Deleware County, NY with Johan/John. Also their were daughters: Jensine B: 1886, Maria B: 1889, Gudrun B: 9/22/1900, Amanda 1903. I found the family in a 1900 Census of Lyngdal, Norway and it's mentions "name of domicile" as "Bringsjordnaes".

I am looking for information on my husbands family. His grandfather John/Johan E. Jacobson ( Jakobsen, Jacobsen)B:1896 Lyngdal, Norway D: 1981 Delhi,Deleware County, NY) lived in Deleware County, NY. He was a barber all his life and married Iva Hoosier in Sep 14, 1927. They had a daughter NORMA JACOBSON born in 1932 or 33. Iva died in 1933 I am not sure if it was related to childbirth I cannot find any record on her death. NORMA (Jakobsen) only shows up in the 1940 census with her father in Stamford, Deleware County, NY. I know nothing else of Norma except that she DIED in a CAR ACCIDENT( as told by a family member)prior to 1980 but I do not know any dates, location or anything about her being married... nothing. There are several Norma Jacobson's listed for NYC but I am unsure if any are her. I also found a passenger list from 6 Oct 1950 from Norway. I thought she might have gone to visit her father's family. Not sure! Looking for a few clever researchers to see if they can find something I can't. I am not in NY and do not know where to start looking. I have spent many hours on ancestry.com and I am at a wall. John remarried in 1941 to Ida Munson and had my husband's father. Thank you in advance.

Re: Polly ROE (1812-1876) m. Samuel Ellett; resided Davenport

Pat,

I asked about Lemuel’s middle name because the letter V seems unusual and may provide a clue to his ancestry.

I purchased the Hitt book from Maurice Hitt several years ago and, in 2011, I donated it to the Steele Library, Elmira. Unfortunately, I did not begin my Roe family research until early 2012 so I may have missed some clues in that book. My 4th great-grandparents are William Holliday and Catherine HITT Holliday. They are buried in the old Downsville Cemetery.

I have read some of the posts by Russ Miller and he seemed to have a research interest in Polly ROE Ellett, wife of Samuel Ellett. Perhaps he believed Emeline ELLETT Miller (1858-1939) was the daughter of Polly and Samuel. In one post, he theorized that Polly ROE Ellett may have been a sister of Nathaniel Roe (1801-aft1879), whom resided near Polly, in Davenport. Russ Miller noted that Nathaniel’s family and Polly’s family both had daughters named Lydia and Emeline.

My 5th great-grandparents were Cornelius Mosher (1760-1825) and Rosanna ROE Mosher (bc1764-1848). In the 1800 Federal census of Coeymans, Albany Co., New York, Cornelius Mosher is enumerated next to five Row (Roe) males who are of the same age as my Rosanna. I believe they are related to her, perhaps, her brothers. That Roe family group migrated to Schoharie and Delaware counties; later, to Otsego and Chenango counties of New York.

I have been trying to stitch together that Roe family with the goal of identifying the parents of my Rosanna ROE Mosher (bc1764-1848), hence, my interest in Polly ROE Ellett’s ancestry. Polly may have been a daughter of Joshua Roe (bc1764-aft1839) who was enumerated in Coeymans, 1800.

Thanks for your help.

Paul

Paul,

I do not know Lemuel's middle name. One of my sources for Lemuel was #684, Mary Etta Hunter-"Descendants of Henry Hitt of Woodbury, Connecticut"-Maurice R. Hitt, Jr., C.G.-Windswept Press-Interlaken, NY-1993-ISBN: 1-55787-106-X, Lemuel V. Ellett-pgs 287, 397. However, I now see that on 3 later pages, Maurice used the middle initial "L". Other sources has his name simply as "Lemuel".

I set up a record on Find A Grave with picture for the gravesite of Emma ELLETT Miller and her husband, James Ransom Miller; MILLER being my family interest. I never made the connection but I believe it is very possible that she could be Lemuel's sister Emeline. I lean this way because Russ C. Miller, VA (now deceased) and I exchanged family information. His MILLER family tree includes James Ransom Miller +Emmeline Ellett 1858-1939 with a note "aka: Emma Ellett".

You will note that I originally posted Emma's dates as per the gravestone, but now find in going through my notes that I have the actual dates and have made the changes on Find A Grave. The stone shows her death year to be 1938. I'm not sure why, but it is not unusual for errors. Russ gave me the year 1939 and I have confirmed the date with the records of the Colchester Town Clerk's Office, Downsville, Delaware Co., NY.

James Ransom and Emmeline/Emma (Ellett) Miller were the grandparents of Russ C. Miller. James was a brother to my gg-grandmother.

Pat

I am also tracing distant Wood family who came from Ulster County to Delaware County. I have John Wood, born about 1813 and married to Catherine (last name unknown) born abt 1814 in Sullivan County. The family appears in the 1850 NY Census for Andes, Delaware County, NY. John owned a Hotel and Tavern in Andes, NY (The Andes Hotel that still operates today?) and had the children: Anne, Betsy, Frances, George, John, Lorenzo, Richard, and Selina (also spelled Celina). John is missing from the 1875 census and Catherine is living with her son, Richard's family, so she is likely widowed.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Online sources indicate Daniel Nichols was the son of Ezra and Elizabeth KNAPP Nichols.

Anna ROE was the second wife of Daniel Nichols. Anna and Daniel are believed to have had at least 6 children in the 1824-1835 timeframe. Those children were named Ezra Joshua, Clemon Orlando, Betsey Ann, Hannah Elizabeth, Whitman Bryant, and Hiram Oscar Nichols.

1830 – in the census of Harpersfield, residing next door to Daniel Nichols is a Joshua Roe, born circa 1760-1770. Joshua is the right age to be Anna’s father or uncle. In Joshua’s household are two females, born 1810-1815, and one female, born 1760-1770.

1840 – in the census of Harpersfield, residing next door to Daniel Nichols is likely the same Joshua Roe, born circa 1760-1770.

1850 – the Harpersfield census lists the family of Daniel and Anna ROE Nichols, copied below.

1850 - Harpersfield, Delaware Co., New York lists:
Anna Nichols F 58 New York
Betsey Ann Nichols F 26 New York
Hannah E Nichols F 17 New York
Daniel Nichols M 67 Connecticut
Ezra J Nichols M 24 New York
Clemen O Nichols M 22 New York
Whitman B Nichols M 19 New York
Hiram O Nichols M 15 New York
My note: Residing next door is Daniel S. Nichols.

Any information about the parents or siblings of Anna ROE Nichols would be much appreciated. Also, I am interested in learning more details (town and county) of Anna’s birth.

Paul E. Newell
Ellicott City, MD

In letter he mentions a Tom Reynolds, who had gone bankrupt and was leaving WI. George Reynolds was receiving a Pension of some sort. The letter is orginal and handwritten in pencil. Very hard to read. You are welcome to a copy if you are interested. I have also transcribed letter on my family tree which is public.

Wayne,

Thanks for your reply and for the information you provided; especially, the County of birth data for the family of Nathaniel and Louisa. It is my belief that the majority of their children were born in Schoharie County. I believe I found Nathaniel residing in the Town of Jefferson, in 1830, and in the Town of Summit, in 1840.

Also, thanks for locating Nathaniel and Louisa in the 1875 NYS census at familysearch.org; however, I cannot find that census year offering on their website. For the 1880 Federal census, your help with the spelling of Nathaniel’s surname “Rae” enabled me to locate that record, online.

I located a Louisa A. Roe, wife of Nathaniel, buried in Dugway Cem., Summit, Schoharie County. Her death date is reported to be 1817 and her age is 75 years. If the person reading the gravestone inscription mistook a 1 for a 7 then Louisa’s age and date of death would match the wife of target Nathaniel Roe, of Davenport.

I would like to discover Nathaniel’s date and place of death. Since we know he lived at least to 1880, I may be able to order his death certificate.

I have investigated some of the children of Nathaniel and Louisa, looking for information about their ancestry but nothing remarkable has been revealed to me.

Thanks again for your help.

Paul E.

I have reached a dead end with this branch of my family tree. William (1828-aft 1895) and Prudence (1833-bef 1895) were written about in the Delaware County Biographical Review for Thomas White: "White married Melissa, dauther of Willam and Prudy A (Ingraham) Marshall, who was born March 12, 1849. Mr and Mrs Marshall occupied a farm in Rockland, and were the parents of six children - Melissa, James, Ruth, Frank, Ella and Henry. Mr Marshall is still living, a resident of Meredith; but his wife has passed away." I've also found census records in 1850 and 1860 for Rockland that seem to match up but can't find any information that makes a connection to his parents. Please reply if you have any information to share!

Did some looking around, it appears that Louisa died sometime between 1875 and 1880. In 1875 Davenport, Delaware, E.D. 01, page 13, census at www.familysearch.org Nathaniel, Louisa, Benjamin, Emeline, and Ruanna are living with Lydia and her family. At ancestry.com in 1880 Nathaniel Rae is widowed and again living wth Lydia & family along with Emeline. In the 1875 census it's asked what County you were born, Nathaniel & Louisa show Albany County, for the children it says Schoharie County. At ancestry.com in 1855 Davenport census which I've attached it says they were all born in Albany County.
Have you looked at any of the childrens death, obits, or burial records to see if they mention Louisa's maiden name ?

Wayne

I'm looking for anything I can get on my 2nd great grandfather, Alexander R. McNeilly. I believe he immigrated about 1880 from Northern Ireland. He married Sarah Jane Burnet (daughter of Ambrose Burnet and Sally Ann Wagner) in 1881 in Schoharie County and it looks like he spent the rest of his life in Delaware County. He died in 1934. He was naturalized in Delaware County in 1892. Specifically, I would like his full name, birth place, and the names of his parents.

I am trying to identify the parents of Nathaniel Roe/Rowe, b. circa 1801 in New York; m. Louisa (surname unknown) circa 1823 in New York; d. after 1869.

Louisa (surname unknown), b. circa 1803 in New York; d. after 1869.

Nathaniel and Louisa may have resided in Jefferson, Schoharie Co., New York in the 1830-1840 timeframe. Nathaniel and Louisa are enumerated in Davenport, Delaware Co., New York for the 1850–1870 census records. Jefferson and Davenport, New York are separated by about 13 miles.

Nathaniel and Louisa are believed to have had at least 8 children. Those children are named Emiline, William, Benjamin, Wesley, Lydia, Daniel, Joshua, and Ruanna. There may have been another son named Ezra.

The last known record of Nathaniel and Louisa is the 1870 census of Davenport, as follows:

1870 - Davenport, Delaware Co., New York lists:
Nathaniel Rowe M 67y New York
Louisa Rowe F 68y New York
Timothy Brasee M 31y New York
Lydia A Brasee F 32y New York
Frank W Brasee M 3y New York
Emiline Rowe F 42y New York

Any information about the parentage of Nathaniel Roe/Rowe, his siblings, or his place of death and burial would be much appreciated.

Paul E.
Mary Dimpsey (Dempsey) appears in the 1875 Census of Tompkins, Delaware County. It says she owned some property, and two sons (Thomas and John) were listed as farmers and farm laborers. Would there be records of land ownership from 1875? The property must have been sold, because she shows up in the 1880 census in Cannonsville.

She is my dead end as far as my research goes.
