"Looking for the parents and ancestors of John Nichols (b. 1823) married to Abby T. (Carpenter)"

Family & Local Histories > A Biographical record of Chemung County, New York pg 392

Please allow for typing mistakes ...
"A Biographical record of Chemung County, New York
Date of Publication: 1902
John Nichols, who is now spending the closing years of a useful and well spent life
in ease and retirement at his pleasant home
in Horseheads, Ny, was born on the 10th of October, 1824, at Long Meadow,
Hampden county, Mass, and is of English lineage. His parents were Carlos
and Fanny (Combs) Nichols, the former a native of Ct and the latter of Mass
and his paternal grandparents were Colonel Ebenezer and Olive Bacon
Nichols. The grandfather aided the colonies in their struggle for independence, serving
with distinction as colonel in the Revolutionary war. The father, Carlos Nichols,
was a millwright by trade, and being a thorough mechanic was able to do everything in
connection with the building of a mill from converting the trees into timbers for the
structure and the unquarried stone into grinders. He made his home in Long
Meadow, Mass, up to within four months of his death, when he removed to
Wisconsin, where he passed away in 1846 at the age of fifty-six years. His wife died
in 1850, at the age of sixty, and both were buried in the town of Windsor, Dane coun-
ty, Wisconsin. They were consistent and faithful members of the Baptist church, and
he was a Democrat in politics. In their family were eleven children, three sons and
eight daughters, namely: Olive and Caroline, both now deceased; Carlos, Jr; Eme-
line, Dolly And and Mary, all three deceased; Susan, deceased; John, our subject;
Edwin, a resident of Iowa; Amanda, deceased; and Harriet, a resident of Minnesota.

Mr. Nichols, of this review, was born upon the banks of the Connecticut River three miles
below the city of Springfield, in the town of Long Meadow, Massachusetts, in 1824, and
there he was reared until he had reached the age of twelve years. Up to that time he
attended school a mile and a half from his home during the summer and winter months
to a greater or less extent. At that early day steamboats ran up and down the river and
also flat-bottomed freight boats made their way from Hartford to Springfield. Two steam
passenger and two steam tug boats were also upon the river. Every spring the shad made
their way up the river where they were caught with long seines called "shad nets," the
season continuing through April and May. Mr Nichols ferried people back and forth across
the river to purchase shad. At the time of the spring freshets the family secured enough
floatwood to keep up their fires throughout the year. In summer he worked by the day at
planting, haying and harvesting. At the age of twelve years he drove horse carts at the
brick yard; at the age of thirteen years he drove ox carts used in hauling clay and sand.
The following year he drove two and sometimes four-horse teams drawing brick and
wood. He carted brick at that time all over the town of Springfield. At fifteen years of age
he went to live with his brother-in-law, Fred Mills. There he learned the blacksmith's trade,
which he followed for five years, working for his board and clothes. During that time he
also attended school for two winters. When young he joined the Presbyterian church, and
rang the bell for church services and tolled it for deaths and funerals. He swept and
cared for the house of worship for three years during the term of his apprenticeship
at the blacksmith's trade. Upon his return home he secured employment at twenty dollars
a month and board, working for Potter Parsons, of Enfield Connecticut, at which place he
was employed two years. He then left there for Wisconsin, which was still a territory, this
being in the year 1846. Leaving his native state, he went by railroad from Springfield,
Mass, to Albany, NY; by the Erie canal to Buffalo, and the Great Lakes to Milwaukee,
arriving in that city in October after a stormy voyage of ten days. After visiting his mother
for a short time he made his way to McHenry county, Illinois, where he lived for three
years, working ay his trade and farming.
In the meantime Mr Nichols was married Mar 9 1848 to Miss Abby T Carpenter,
a daughter of Thomas and Kittie (Fisher) Carpenter, who were natives of Chemung county,
New York By this union were born eleven children as follows:
1)Eliza Jane
2)Thomas C a resident of Elmira wedded Mary Hall and has 4 children
Maude, Charles, Robert and Ella
3)John W who is conducting a bakery at Horseheads, married Alice Loomis and has one
child, Rho
4) Elizabeth
5) Julia
6 Ella
7) Henry C is represented on another page of this volume
8) Catherine F
9) George T makes his home in Nebraska
10) Frederick M a resident of the town of Veteran, this county, married Carrie Frazer, and they have one child, Lola
11) Joseph R who is living in Connecticut, married Ella Taylor and they have two sons Alfred & Carlos".
In the steele memorial library in Elmira, NY they have the Newspapers including Star-Gazette on microfilm going back to 1800s. Good chance obit is in the paper there. Unfortunitely I live about 4.5 hours from Elmira so don't go there too often. Maybe you can get someone else to check the papers. I agree with the other persons response to check http://www.joycetice.com/jmtindex.htm. Also www.fultonhistory.com has newspapers of NY State online (not elmira papers as of yet though). The Binghamton papers are there and might yield some information. I did a search on Fulton History web site for Lawrence Brooks using exact phrase and it gave me 457 hits in different papers (no hits for Lawrence Lee Brooks and 6 hits for Lawrence L Brooks). So good chance it will have what you are looking for.

Angela,
In your searches, have you ever come across Lawrence Lee Brooks, who died in Elmira, NY on 8 Jan 1946 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Industry, Beaver, PA. He is part of my wife's family, which I am researching. He was born in East Liverpool OH 18 Nov 1892 and married Maryette Lucile Rollin in Lorain County around 1919. He is listed in the 1920 census, but in 1930 his wife and their son were living with his father-in-law in North Ridgeville OH. I've seen his tombstone (buried with his father, mother and brother).
Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This would have been c1812. Rebecca was born c 1794. Joseph and Rebecca moved to Springfield Twp., Williams Co.,OH.
James died, at age 37, in the Battle of Spotsylvania on 10 May 1864 and war records listed him as missing in action. He was from the Town of Catlin and was the son of Gideon and Mary Masters Gould. There is a monument to him in the Martin Hill Cemetery in Catlin. Does anyone know if he was definitely buried in this cemetery or is it possible he was buried as an unknown in Spotsylvania?
His family was related to the Oldfields, Ferenbaughs and Backers by marriage.

The address I think they lived at, 554 Battery St., was not in the census. It was there however in 1930. No matter what combination of anything I try I cannot find them anywhere in the United States in 1920 and yet I know they were here. Is it possibly that 554 Battery St. was overlooked?

They lived in Veteran, Chemung County NY.
I know from the census his father was from England and Mother from New York. What has been difficult is that there was another William Scott born the same year in the same town, but his wifes name is Minnie. I know for sure there are two different Williams because they each have a census for the same years and the other Williams parents were born in NY.
I assume that you have seen this since your 1999 posting but, if not, it will be helpful. Your 1999 posting does appear to be incorrect as to death dates of Mary's Parents:

Mary Kathryn Passed away at her Elmira Heights apartment that she so lovingly cared for on Sunday morning, February 18, 2007 at the age of 82 with her loving family by her side. Born in Millport, NY on March 9, 1924, Mary was the daughter of Hazel MacDougal Caywood. She was married to John R. Rice in 1945 and he predeceased her in 1950. Mary was a homemaker, devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and close friend to many. Very social, she enjoyed round and square dancing, bingo, and bowling. Mary was a good friend to many of her neighbors at the Villa Serene where she resided. Surviving her are her loving daughters and son-in-law, Rosalie & Mark Polovick, Elmira; and Connie Weale, Elsegundo, CA; sisters-in-law Montene Caywood, Wellsburg, NY; Betty Morgan, Millport, NY; four grandchildren Robbie (Anne) Polovick, Chad Polovick, Hope Buell and Tammy Grosch; seven great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many family friends. In addition to her mother and husband, Mary was predeceased by her son, James Rice; a sister, Joyce Fielder; three brothers, James Caywood; Harold Morgan and Arthur Caywood. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport on Thursday, February 22, 2007 between the hours of 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will take place privately at the families convenience with the Reverend Donald Rockwell officiating. Mary will be buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery beside her husband, John Richard Rice following her funeral services. Mary's family would like to extend their appreciation to the physicians, health care professionals, Southern Tier Hospice and the many friends who have made her final days so comfortable and memorable. May God truly bless each of you.
*******************

Looking for the parents of William Albert Jones born Aug 1830 Elmira Chemung County New York. Wm left not long after becoming of age. Traveled to Missouri where he met the McKee family, and married their daughter. He then left Missouri with the McKee family and by wagon train traveled to Oregon between 1853 and 1856. Diaries written at the time of the wagon train called him "Albert" or "Al".

I believe he is the grandson of Elijah Jones who died 1818 Elmira New York. Philo Jones researchers list a son by the name of Albert, unknown if this is my Wm Albert.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Carol

C61 - - try the Steele Memorial Library at Elmira, NY -go to www.steele.lib.ny.us and ask the Librarian for assistance and/or possible leads - my bet is you will wind up dealing w/ the State of New York Department of Corrections & trying to satisfy and convince them w/ your "need to know" and/or relation to the prisoners PLUS the Privacy Act Things, but good hunting and don't give up in your search - best of luck, Resp GJ Messmer

C61 - - also found this in 1860 US Census for Boston, Mass:
Edward Delaney, age 30, a Gilder(gold leaf applyer), his wife Emeline age 27, both born in Massachusettes - they were living in the 5th Ward of Boston with their three children: Edward age 6; Julia age 4; and Harry age 2 - -they were the only Delaney family I could find in Boston that year who registered in the Census that had a family that closely fits your Delaneys - - in the 1880 US Census for the Elmira, NY Reformatory I found that Henry had reported he was born in Boston, Mass. & had been a school janitor, that he was 22 yrs old; Edward reported he was 26, born in Boston, Mass. & had been a storage inspector --hope this may help, Resp GJ Messmer

Davenport family (Samuel, William) of Erin, Chemung, NY

Two of my grandmother's cousins in Iowa married men named Davenport. I always suspected these men were related. I traced each of them back to two Davenport families in Erin, Chemung, NY: Samuel Davenport, b. c. 1806 (married Ann Unknown) and William Davenport, b. c. 1816 who lived a few farms away (married Harriet Losee or Losse). These two men were almost certainly brothers. They named children after each other, their descendants rented rooms from each other, attended each other's weddings, etc. William left Chemung County around 1852, living in De Kalb Co, IL where most of his children were born. Samuel and was reunited with William's son William Henry Davenport (1843-1928) when both moved to Humboldt Co, IA by 1870 (Samuel appeared to move there directly from Erin).

Can anyone identify the common ancestor of Samuel and William Davenport?

Thanks, Tim Hall
