Seeking information for Loammi COWDEN who appears in the 1825 state census index for the town of Chautuaqua, and in the 1845 state census in Ripley, Chautuaqua County. He served with the 19th regiment, NY militia during the war of 1812 and was a shoemaker. He resided in Yates Co before moving to Chautuaqua Co. He then lived in Northeast Twp, Erie, PA from 1830-1860. I am trying to discover if he is the father of Ephraim COWDEN, married in 1843 to Cornelia Dickson, daughter of Forgus Dickson and Harriet Nash. (Ephraim went with the Dickson's to IL about 1845) Any information is appreciated and will gladly share and exchange information I have with you! Thank you much.

I do not believe that Ephraim Cowden is related to Laommi Cowden. Laommi, born in 1793 at Rome,NY had a large family but there is no record of a child with the name of Ephraim. Laommi lived his later years in Jackson Co., MI, returning to Chautauqua Co,, NY to die at the home of his daughter in 1877. I am not sure but I think your Epraim Cowden changed his name to Cowden as a young man and was not born a Cowden.

Ephraim Cowdin

Thank you for responding, I can now eliminate Loammi of Chautuaqua as a possibility. However, do you have anything to support the posibility that my Ephraim was not born a Cowdin? I do have some conflicting information that he may have been born a CARDER and an oral history that he changed his name at some point in time for some unknown reason but absolutely no details are known. I assumed the change was merely the spelling of Cowden from EN to IN, but it seems I reached a rather hasty conclusion! I'd appreciate any information that might help clarify this little mystery. Again, thank you very much for your time and help.

He did not get convicted of murder but did get convicted of manslaughter. George Cowden is a son of Laommi and brother of Charlie. George's wife, Lura, was called as a witness at the trial. I would be interested in the newspaper accounts of the trial. Charlie had a son named Willie. Both Willie and Ida were in the Erie (PA) Home for the Friendless in the 1880 Census.

As for Loami Cowden, The Chautauqua Genealogist, Vol. 18, No. 2, page 48 indicates he was born 8 April 1793, died 31 March 1877 and is buried in the Sherman Cemetery, although they have no record of his burial there. He was married to Lydia Packer. There is a daughter, Lucretia Cowden Wing, born 18 November 1818, died 26 April 1904 and is buried in Sherman Cemetery. She was born in Batavia, according to the article, and married Ichabod Wing on 11 October 1835.
RIchard;

** My notes
This is Ichabod WING III whom I just tracked for another data base;
there are no Cowden any spelling in 1870 census so he must have come to Lucretia when he was ready to die;
he may be buried in North East too, there was nothing on him in the burial books or I would have posted it;
COWDEN
Alice Amelia, 1870-6-28
John I. 1852-9-22
William H. 1848-10-10
are the only KNOWN Cowden in Sherman cemetery who are THEY? dates are DEATH or burial dates
