Abraham Konings, born 22 January 1793 in Woold, Winterswijk, Gelderland, The Netherlands, son of Jan Konings and Enneken ten Damme, married in Winterswijk on 18 May 1825 with Hinders/Henders Nijenhuis, born 6 January 1800, daughter of Jan Nijenhuis & Enneken te Kulve. Abraham and Hinders and their children came to America in 1846 aboard the ship "Caledonia," which reached port in New York City on 21 July 1846. The family came to Chautauqua County and settled in Clymer and French Creek. Here the family name was changed from Konings to King. Abraham died 12 September 1871; Hinders (known here as Henrietta) died 29 June 1878. Both died in Clymer and are buried in the Clymer Hill Cemetery.

Their children, all born in Winterswijk, were Berendina (Delia), b.29 October 1825, married Henry Cady; Jan Willem (John), b.13 Feb 1828, married Aleida Willemina Mensink; Gerrit Jan, b.6 April 1830, married Willemina Mensink; Derk (Derrick), b.28 January 1834, married Frederika (Fanny) Hesselink; Elizabeth (Betty), b.30 January 1836, married Nathan P. Wilbur; Jan Hendrik, b.26 November 1838, married (1)Polly Farnsworth and (2) Percis Barlow Baker; Wessel (Westley/Wesley), b.25 January 1841, married Alta Wilbur.

With the exception of Elizabeth and Wessel, the children remained in the Clymer-French Creek area. Wessel moved to Minnesota and later to Wisconsin. Where Elizabeth went is unknown to me. There are several sites on the internet that record Derk marrying and living in Holland, Sheboygan County, WI, but they are incorrect.

Hi Dee,
You were close! Frank Evert Kniphuisen was born in 1843 (I don't know the month and day) in Zoutkamp, Groningen, The Netherlands, son of Evert Freerks Kniphuisen and Annegien (Anna) Pieters van Dyke. In 1848 the family left Zoutkamp to come to America. They sailed from Amsterdam on the ship "Katherine Jackson," which reached port in New York City 17 May 1848. They traveled across NYS with a group of Hollanders who went on to Michigan, while the Kniphuisens came from Buffalo to Clymer.

Frank's father died in Clymer in 1851; Frank's mother remarried with a Nijenhuis and moved with him and her children to Sheboygan, WI. In 1855, just before she died, she urged her children to return to Clymer. The five children, ranging in age from five to fourteen came back to Clymer and each child found a home with a Clymer family.

In the Civil War, Frank was with Co. D of the 112th Regt. NY Volunteers and was discharged for disability, at hospital, 22 November 1863. After the war he moved west. On 12 October 1869, in Livingston, Davies County, MO, he married Amanda Melvina Davis. They were the parents of three: Edmund M., b. 20 August 1873; Orpha F., b.10 May 1876; Robert Nicolas, b.13 November 1883. Frank's second marriage, 12 April 1886 in Leadville, CO, was to Emma J.Strathman. Frank died in Leadville on 12 June 1907. At some time in his life Frank changed his name from Kniphuisen to Kniphausen.

appreciated your data.
Doing research on the Wassink clan who also left Winterswijk in 1873 for Clymer.
My grandfather was Albert John (A.J.) son of Jan Berend Wassink and Theodora Wiggers. Jan Berend was son of Hendrick Willem Wassink and Johanna Ten Damme.
My grandmother was Minnie Vanderkooi daughter of Ryner Vanderkooi and Hannah VanderSchaff. I believe they were all from the Clymer area but have very little information.
I am going to Winterswijk next month.

Thank you.
As you said, the Wassinks and the Vanderkoois were/are from the Clymer area. Your grandmother Minnie was a daughter of Rynder/Reinder VanderKooi and Hannah (Hendrika Johanna) Damkot. Hannah, born 17 Oct 1856 in Clymer, was a daughter of Wander Damkot and Gertrude (Janna Geertruida) Oonk. Hannah's stepfather was Frederick VanderSchaaff. Reinder, born 11 Feb 1855, was a son of Tyce (Tijs) van der Kooi and Aleida Geerts Kooi. The van der Kooi family came to Clymer from Groningen Province, NL; the van der Schaaff family came from Dokkum, Friesland, NL; the rest were, as you probably knew, were from Winterswijk, Gelderland, NL.
I have a bit more information about the ancestors of Albert John Wassink and quite a lot about Minnie's ancestors. Also have Wassink and VanderKooi descendants. If you would like me to send what I have to you, please let me know.
Have a great trip to Winterswijk.
Thelma

would you happen to know if Abraham might have been the ancestor of Jennings Bryan King (born 1894) also of the Clymer area? I have been trying to get more information about my father's side of my family tree, but King is a common name. I know he was married twice: first to Florence G. Goodwill, then to Milia M. Gilbert. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am quite sure that Abraham Konings/King was not an ancestor of Jennings Bryan King.
When Jennings registered for the WWI draft on June 2, 1917, he was living in Jamestown, NY, and stated that he was born May 4, 1894, in Spring Creek, PA. In the 1900 census he was found living in Sheffield, Warren County, PA, with his parents, George W. and Nellie M. King.
Postings on Family Trees at Ancestry.com list Jennings as a son of George W. King and Nellie M. Ford. Those postings also note that Jennings was married to Florence G. Goodwill and LEAH M. Gilbert.
In 1920 Jennings and Florence and their two sons were living in Wayne Township, Erie County, PA. In 1930 Jennings and Leah and five children were living in Chautauqua, Chautauqua County, NY.

Hi Thelma,

My name is Eric Hatch and I was born and raised in Corry, PA. I have several dutch ancestors from the Clymer area, particularly on my paternal grandmother's side. Her maiden name was Schurman, and her mother's maiden name was Kniphuisen. I'm also related to the Meerdinks and Lammers', and some others.

I saw the post you left regarding Frank Kniphuisen. His brother Peter was my Great Great Grandfather. What I am most interested in learning is if you have any information on his younger brother Oscar. I had heard that he changed the spelling of his name somehow and moved to the Chicago area. I would be interested in learning more if you know what happened to him.

Thanks.

Eric Hatch

Hello, Eric! What was your mother's first name? Do you know her father's name? My husband is related to Schurmans in Clymer, as well as to Meerdinks and Lammers'.
