Hi Eric,
The child living with the Dunnewold family in 1855 was Orpha, not Oscar. Orpha was a girl. I did some re-checking on her birthday. Gravestone says born 1848. Death record in French Creek, NY, where she died stated that she died 4 March 1911 at the age of 62 years, 5 months, 15 days, which computes to a birthdate of 19 September 1848, which would have been after the family arrived in the U.S. In the 1900 census for French Creek her birth date is given as October 1847 and it says she was born in New York. Both of those could not be correct. I am inclined to think that 1848 was her birth year and October was her birth month.
Orpha married 20 March 1873 with Gerrit Jan (Garrett John) Legters, born 2 August 1848 Winterswijk, Gelderland, Netherlands. They were the parents of six children: Benjamin Franklin (Frank), b. 7 Apr 1874, died 28 Apr 1919; Charles, b.20 Feb 1877, d.23 Feb 1877; Alice Anna, b.15 Mar 1878, d.25 Sep 1903; Emma Angeline, b.19 Nov 1882, d.2 Oct 1903; Bertha, b.11 Oct 1886, d.26 Oct 1873; George Henry, b.9 May 1891, d.6 Dec 1960.
The gravestone for Frances has her birth year as 1845 and the 1900 census says she was born in November 1845 in Holland.
In the 1855 census Frank was listed as being 12, which computes to a birth year of about 1843, In 1860 he was working as a farmhand for the Steward family in French Creek, NY, at age 17, which also computes to a birth year of 1843. It says he was born in Holland. In the 1900 census he says he was born in April 1848 in New York. It also says that both of his parents were born in New York, so I don't have much confidence in that data. I didn't find any date of birth for him in his pension record. He enlisted in the army in 1862, which indicates he probably was born no later than 1844.
