I am chasing another local myth in the form of Thomas Ballard. The 1922 Kern's History of Port Byron states that Thomas Ballard, the famous counterfeiter from NYC, lived in PB for a while. All I can find is that Ballard "lived" in an Auburn jail circa 1874, after being captured in Buffalo after a jail break in NYC three years prior. Ballard may have escaped while here. Maybe Ballard ran to PB to get on a train after his escape? Can anyone help?
