A2h mitochondrial ancestry - NM geographical cluster

Hi there,

I have been wanting to investigate my maternal line ever since genetic testing helped me find my birth family (I'm an adoptee in reunion).

With one of the utilities here I was able to view a map of the "earliest known maternal line ancestor" for people with my haplotype, and I was interested to see that there is a definite cluster in northern New Mexico.

In my case this helped me with my adoption search, as I was able to pair this information with a genealogy I received from a second cousin that I found via the Relative Finder at 23andme, and traced my aunt in Albuquerque by following the line of that genealogy that moved to New Mexico. My aunt put me in touch with my birth mother, and I have also been reunited with my Hispanic relatives who have lived in northern New Mexico for hundreds of years.

I have learned how lucky I was to have this kind of clear-cut information, particularly the obvious geographical localization. I am not a genealogist or a geneticist but it seems like that h-mutation of the A2 haplotype might have been relatively recent (whatever that might mean) for that cluster to still be visible.

I thought it would be fun to try to track down the A2h "Eve." If you're A2h or if your roots are northern New Mexico and you share some of the surnames listed here, would you post here? I'm using Ancestry.com conventions and only listing names for the deceased (besides myself). My tree is public, the Gilbert Nelson Romo family tree.

My maternal line:

Alice Toler 1974 -
Mom 1955 -
Grandma 1933 -
Great grandma Delia Romero 1907 - 1948
Great great grandma Antonia (perhaps her maiden name was Labadie?) 1884 - 1976

after this I'm not sure, but Ancestry.com hints suggest:

Vidalita Cordova b 1858
Maria Peralta ?
Antonia Martinez ?
Viviana Apodaca b 1813

Thanks!

They have family related to the Chavez, Baca and others in New Mexico. I'm searching but starting without much, just leads to speculation, guessing and production time going down. ANY information wil be appreicated. RE: Sam & Shannon Martinez were the parents and good family friends. Thank you, HAPPY NEW YEAR !!

Chuck

Re: George W., Charles W. Lewis

Update:

George W. Lewis married Marcelina Salas (b. Apr 1820)

Their Son Charles W. Lewis married Jessie Evans (of St. Louis), but she died after giving birth to children, and Charles remarried to a Candelaria Ynivari (b. nov 1865) in 1896.

Charles and Jessie's Children are:

George E. Lewis (b. Oct 1869)
Jessie D. Lewis (b. Oct 1873)
John W. Lewis (b. 1877)
Charles V. Lewis (b. 1879)

Charles and Candelaria had:

Manny Lewis (b. 1900)

John W. Lewis married Enriqueta Castelo (b. 1899) and had:

James Lewis (b. 1921)
Anita Lewis (1923-1985. Judge in the state of AZ, Married to Gustave V Chavez)
Hector F. Lewis (b.1924)
Johnny Lewis (b.1927)
Oscar Lewis (b.1928)

So I have discovered quite a bit, but every new branch discovered only raises more question, so here goes:

a- I would like to keep digging into the Lewis Family
b- Still searching for the missing Jessie Evans of St. Louis
c- Curious about Candelaria Ynivari and her Family
d- Interested in Enriqueta Castelo and her family.
I know her mother Juana Rojo Vida de Castelo lived with her family for many years, and her maiden name was Rojo. I have no info on her husband except his nmae: Bartollo Rojo.
e- Interested in investigating the Chavez Family

I am trying to break through a brick wall I have faced. It looks like past my grand mother, Ive got nothing except a piece of paper typed up from probably about 80 years ago stating:

George W. Lewis b. 1795 Kentucky.
Married to: Marcalena Salas de Ortiz

son

Charles W. Lewis b. 16 Jul 1844 Peralta, Valencia Country NM.
Married to: Miss Jessie Evans of St. Louis.

children:

George E. Lewis,
Jessie Lewis
Charles B. Lewis,
John W. Lewis -son->Oscar Lewis.

Aside from the genealogical information, there is a paragraph on George W. Lewis and his heroic life events, and a one page biography on Charles W. Lewis written in 1895 I believe, which talks mainly about his business affairs; mainly how many acres of land he owned and how many sheep and cattle he had, as well as his business and political affiliations.

Any information on these people would be especially helpful, as I need to tie this document and these people back to my grandmother: Anita Lewis, who was born in 1921, and was a judge in the state of Arizona.

Searching for information on death certificate/burial information for Audrey Curling. B. ~1925 in VA or NC, D. in NM. Son and daughter-in-law, Hal Curling Jr. and Rebecca. Audrey was divorced from Harold Leon Curling Sr. in VA and moved to NM to be near her son. She was in poor health for several years. Our best guess is she died in the 1990s or early 2000s. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Gold and silver mining were major occupations and attractions in that period, especially around Silver City, Grant County, NM. The boom included Pinos Altos, Hanover, Georgetown and dozens more. Lots of the activity continued into the teens and twentys.
The state of New Mexico was established from the Territory in 1912, so 1900 archives might be a good place to start narrowing down your search. Some of the towns are no longer populated, such as Lake Valley. Some are semi-touristy places, but with a solid foundation in mining, such as Magdalena, Winston, Mogollon, Kingston and White Oaks. I have probably forgotten some important ones, but check with the NM State History site. Remember to note how HUGE the counties in NM were, and when they were divided.
Cheers!

Royal died in 1959 in Howard Co.,NE.
Bessie Bagley remarried to Albert Saffell in IA abt 1920 and had a son and a daughter with him. I see that he was born in Iowa, abt. 1867 there are allot of Thorpe's in that state past on or before 1920 any advice for me where to look?

Say can you direct me in the right direction for Lucy Mabel Luman's obit? I can't seem to find it in google. Too Funny
Again thank you

It was not uncommon back in the day, to marry "an older man". The 1930 census shows Pearl as married, but whether she divorced or Thomas Tharp died in that time frame, who knows. I do not find the man after the 1920 census, nor in any database of death records I know of in NM,CA or states in between.
There are SO many descendants in the Luman family,SOMEWHERE is someone who knows about Thomas Tharp. Lucy Mabel Luman's obit is online if you "google" her,and she had 33 grandkids,59 great grandkids and 2 great great grandkids at the time of her death in 1955. Her children are given as Lavetta Ireland(-her obit is online too, with scads of grand and great grandkids);Elsie Walkup,Bertha Moore and Karl Luman. And of course it says her daughter Pearl Beaver died before she did.

Thank you for your help, verry cool of you to do this for me.

say I see that thomas J Thorpe was 53 years old in 1920 which make him born around 1867 and it looks like he married Pearl if I read this right. Because I needed to find out the father of Thomas Jean Tharp born 2 nov 1921 New Mexico 1930 Census of california that does not have a father listed as head of house hold just the grandmother Mabel. I belive it also has her listed as a widowed. was it common to marry an older man back then? and is it a possibility that he may be the father to the three childern for tharp?

Looks to me to be all be the same family. I figure go with what you know on surnames unless something proves otherwise. As records get transcribed from handwritten sources, "interpretation" of handwriting produces odd results, or it gets "heard" differently by a record keeper and they write it down as they THINK they heard it. "Tharp" appears to be correct, and then shows up as "Thorp" or "Thorpe" here and there. Be liberal with that sort of thing when searching! For example: At some point between 1930 and 1932,Pearl married Oscar Beaver, and had two children with him. The birth record of their daughter gives Pearl's maiden name as "Leiman",and the birth record of their son gives "Luman". It's all a puzzle to be put together on piece at a time!

If it may help:
The 1920 census shows Pearl, indexed as "Thorpe",living with her maternal grandparents in Farmington,San Juan,NM-with daughter Ethel Fay,and looks like her husband was indexed as grandson of the same couple as opposed to "grandson in law"; he was given as "Thomas Thorpe" age 53,born in IA.

In 1910,Pearl, with mother and siblings lived in Montrose Co.,CO

So,given those places are "near state lines",I took a look in CO for a marriage and:
http://www.colorado.gov/dpa/doit/archives/hrd/

Colorado State Archives marriage license records- Pearl Luman and "Thomas J.
I, too, have been searching for the father of Yolanda Madeline Gonzalez because she is my second cousin. I don't know if you have the answer yet but Vera Padilla told me many years ago that it was a Max Gonzalez. However, I can't find any birth, marriage or death record for a Max Gonzalez married to a Herminia Chacon. It is a mystery. I suspect that there was no marriage to Max Gonzalez or any marriage for that fact. Vera is still alive and living in Los Lunas or Belen if you want to pursue the matter with her. I am the daughter of Ernest Chacon who was a first cousin to Vera Padilla; they were close as kids in Albuquerque.
Re: Hilary Dickens, Belva Lockwood St Clair, Livonia Joyce Beach

Bottom Line First: I looked at many family trees of this family, partial information at best, speculation at most. There was little to really confirm any of the information about Hilary and his family, Belva was identified but there was really NO confirmation of information. There was highly conflicting information (her being married to Travis J. Wellborn, living with him and being married to H.B (Hilary B. Dickens) before she is shown living with this Travis J). There "could" be two different Belva St. Clair and records have joined them, especially in the family trees. There are SOOOO MANY errors posted in family trees, I'm constantly writing to tree owners to tell them their facts don't fit with actual records.
--You identified your Grandfather as born in 1933 (Full DOB and POB would help), but there is another Edwin E found in New Mexico. You wrote your grandfather was the second child of Hilary...but who was the mother, where was he born, etc.
--I would strongly suggest beginning with your mother, then obtaining the full DOB/POB/DOD of Edwin. The "family lore" of Belva being half Cherokee, half french, etc, is "family lore" and family lore is OFTEN wrong. I would obtain the obit or Edwin, then if possible the obit of Hilary to see just what was written about him and who was identified as family.
---As I wrote, there is SOOOO MUCH conflicting information about this family, you need to basically begin from scratch and document actual records. Obits are "usually" accurate, death certificates are not always. You need local records, birth certificates, probate, US Census, etc.

--------------Research-------------
I see this is your first posting on Rootsweb (at least under this user name). When you post, stick to the facts and provide some critical information about the persons you seek. In this case the DOB of Hilary Dickens (identify him in the body of the message would help) would help, also any DOB/POB of Belva (appears to be your principal target). If you have already checked the US Census or have obits, or other information that helps, include that.

A family tree owned by James Hamilton Carroll:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/39469583/person/19375031777?s...=
posted on Ancestry.com, accessible by membership or at a local library if they have the library version (using their computers and your library card)
Shows: Hillary(sic) Burton Dickens, born 27 July 1889 in Batesville, Panola County, Mississippi. Married to Livona Joyce Beach 6 July 1909. Son of Eddie Dickens and Mary Pearl Berry. The tree shows all four wives, but nothing other than the name. Another tree shows the same and limited data. BUT, having his DOB helps in research.

Under the spelling Hilary, there are a number of trees.
-One identified Belva St. Clair, born March 8, 1912 in Arkansas, died Oct 1987, Dau of George St. Clair, born 24 Dec 1872 in Missouri, died 13 Mar 1964 in Arkansas, married Liney Poteet 3 Nov 1900. Liney died 1944, no location identified.
--Hilary shown as born 27Jul 1889in Batesville, Panola Co, MS, died Nov 1981 in Socorro, Socorro County, New Mexico.
--Another tree identifies Belva died in 1968..no further information.
--Livonia Joyce Beach shown as born 14 Sep 1889 in Llano River, Sutton Co, TX, died 3 Aug 1957 in Searchlight, Clark County, Nevada.

The 1920 Census of Batson, Johnson County, AR
George St. Clair, age 47, farmer; wife Linee, age 47, born in AR; Eunice, daughter, age 18. Belva would have been about eight in age, census enumerated January 1920.
--The 1920 Census of Justice precinct 3, Morris County, TX, Travis J. Wellborn, born about 1909 in Texas, living with parents James D and Mary L.
--In 1930 Census, Travis J Wellborn, age 21, living with family in Dawson Co, TX, shown as single. Enumerated April 18.
--Seems somewhat difficult to be married to TJ Wellborn on 22 March 1930 and then be in the 1030 Census (below) married to H.B. Dickens in the next month. It appears there are more than one Belva St. Clair..

The 1930 Census shows "H.B. Dickens," age 40; wife Belva, 18, born in AR to both parents born in AR. He was a plumber. They were living in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas. Census enumerated April 9.
--This census shows Belva, age 18, so she would have been born between April 10, 1911 and April 9, 1912... IF, IF, the age is correct. OFTEN Census information is WRONG. This occurs for many reasons. The enumerator made a mistake in math, transcribing notes, etc. The person providing the information was wrong by mistake, or didn't know, OR they guessed or lied. A woman shown as "widow" back in the census documents were sometimes actually separated or divorced. A "naturalized" citizen were still sometimes an alien. Citizenship shown as "Pa" (means papers, indicating the person had filed the Declaration of Intention to become a citizen) was often a lie, the person was still illegal. SO...her actual birth record

You identified your grandfather, Edwin Earl Dickens, was born in 1933. There is an Edwin E. Dickens born 10/27/1925, died April 6 1980, that is buried in the Grants Memorial Park, Grants, Cibola County, NM.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=di...;
Records show he was living with a Shirley R. Dickens, born 1954 and an Eva D. Dickens. This person appears to be the son of a Duncan Dickens and an Anna Wersebe, so probably the wrong person, but this shows the need to fully identify.
If it may help: Firstly, be very liberal with spellings and usage of names--Spanish names got written down rather badly most of the time. With usage, Charles will be Carlos,John will be Juan, etc. Women were often counted in census by maiden name,as was Marcelina Salas Lewis in the 1900 census.
That said, if you will go here:
http://genealogy.az.gov/
You will find birth certificates for children of John Lewis and Enriqueta Castelo in Arizona;Ana in 1923,Hector Frank in 1924,John W.in 1927(died in 1947-death certificate there, birth date differs)and Oscar in 1928. And the death certificate of John Woods Lewis, died Aug.18,1960 in Phoenix.

An obit for John Lewis was printed on:
http://www.mesarfhc.org/search/azobits.htm
LEWIS, JOHN WOODS 83 Arizona Republic 47 20-Aug-1960
{name,age,newspaper,page,date}
A copy can be requested here:
http://www.lib.az.us/archives/email.aspx

Enriqueta Castelo Lewis died on Nov.24,2001 at the age of 102-obit printed Nov.28 in the Arizona Republic.

You might also wander about in the NM records on familysearch.org
There are a few records there-(anything prior to the creation of the NM system of recording vitals in 1919 is tricky to find and time consuming): marriage of Jesse D.Lewis to Emilia Candelaria in 1900;his parents given as Carlos Lewis and Jessie A.Evans; Julian Lewis to Leonor Otero in 1866-his parents given as father-Lewis,mother Marcelina Salas.(He I think, was counted as William Lewis, wife Lenore,in the 1870 Socorro Co.,NM census).
There is a memorial to Jessie Evans Lewis on findagrave.com, died Mar.16,1896 in Bernalillo Co. buried in Fairview Memorial Park-Albuquerque.

Hilary Dickens, Belva Lockwood St Clair, Livonia Joyce Beach

My great grandfather had three children with my great grandmother, "Belva Lockwood St Clair. But it turns out he was married before(we only recently discovered this on accident) and had three more children with Livonia Joyce BEACH, marrying her in 1909. I guess he was married four different times, with Grace Low and Mae Hardy. My grandfather was his second child, I believe, Edwin Earl Dickens, born in 1933. Edwin had 4 children, the first of them being my mother.

Interested in knowing if I have any second cousins out there in New Mexico or somewhere else? Edwin moved to Iowa, but my mom and I now live in California. (I have found we can trace our family history of the Dickens back to Colonel Robert Dickins, of North Carolina. The family then moved to Tennessee, then Mississippi, and then finally New Mexico with Hilary.)

But does anyone know anything more about Belva and her parents? I know she was born in 1912 Arkansas, but I can't find where. My grandfather says she was half Cherokee half French. He said her mother was a Medicine Woman and father being a fur trader from France. Years ago I found a website that claimed her mother's name was "Curly".

I beleive his Father's name is James but I'm not positive.

They are Peanut Farmers and Real Estate Investors. I don't know much, only know this because I date Shannon for a very short time about 8 years ago.

Hi Dan,

Births weren't officially recorded in New Mexico until 1919 and then at the county level. First you need to know which county to search in.

Do you know when and where they were married? Her birth info MIGHT be on that document.

Do you have a copy of her death certificate? Her birth info will be on that document if the Informant was knowledgeable about that info.

Do you have a copy of her obituary? The birth info might be in it.

If she was Catholic, you can trace her birth through the church. However, you need to know more about where she was born in New Mexico to find out which archdiocese will have the info. Successful Searching!

This is a tough one... I learned that the Catholic Church in Hoehne, CO was The Holy Family Cath. Church established in 1890. The records should be available on microfilm at the Family History Center through the LDS church and may offer a baptismal record. Denver is the archdiocese.

The 1930 census indicates that Rafael is divorced. Perhaps, if there is a divorce record from Colfax County it might offer some more clues.

Both census records state that Rafael was a coal miner. The 1940 census should be searchable by name in a short while, perhaps Rafael or Elize will show up there. I did check the Colorado 1940 and did not find him. NM is about 78% indexed and it won't be too long before it's index is also searchable at Family Search.org.

Good luck
Martha

The info I do know is that her name is Eliza Garcia born at Hoehne, Colorado in the month of October in 1901. I do know her fathers name was Jose F. Garcia. She married my Great-Grandfather Rafael Huerta at Raton, New Mexico in the year 1917. Soon after they had a little girl whose name I've never pin pointed. Once census had her as Blasita another Flossie, then a little boy two years later. He was my grandfather. Manuel. As far as Eliza I have only found her in the 1910 census under Lizzie. I did visit Raton once. I found a land deed with both their names & marriage certificate. I lost the trail there.

For the past eighteen years I have been in search of this elusive women who gave birth to my grandfather 90 years ago. In the years since I've started I've come to a wall. I know when and where she married my great-grandfather and where they bought a house. But as for where she comes from or where she went I don't know. Her maiden name was Garcia and she married young to Raphael Huerta. They lived in Raton, NM. But where she went four years after they bought the house I do not know. I do know that three months prior to my Great-grandfather committing suicide she reappeared and sold their home in Raton, NM. If anyone know anything. Please, I am one of her many descendents. We all crave to know about her life and where we all come from. Thank you and may you travel well in life.
