Hi,

I saw your messages. My 2nd great uncle was treated at Fort Baynard in 1910 for TB. For what I understand, there are no personal patient records? I just have his pension records that list the hospital.

Is there a way to get a copy of the hospital before it is gone?

Thanks,
Dawn

I would love a present day picture of the old hospital. I am a physician and medical historian. My area of interest is the Civil War but now that I have rads the history of the hospital, I will be writing to the people led below the article on your site. The fact that it was the first military sanitarium is incredibly medically historically significant.
There has got to be other options including the development of. Coalition to buy it from the county ad turn it into a mixed use area with preservation of the most important buildings.
Valerie

In the time frame you seek, Fort Bayard was a VA hospital.
If you've not been there, www.fortbayard.org has information about the history and the efforts to save it.
If you wish a present day photo of the place, I will be glad to take one for you before it comes down! Not to be confused with the NEW hospital, which was a built a few years ago, OFF the grounds of Fort Bayard.

No luck with Bright. Records don't go back that far. Was Fort Bayard still an active military hospital in 1942? If so there might be medical records with Army medical command or NARA or the VA

Is there a way to make a donation? Additionally is there a way to get a picture of the hospital? Where exactly is the hospital located? Is it in Albequerque or somewhere else?
I have the handwritten note that Harry's brother wrote probably in 1950. He called it Fort Baird and I have been searching for it under that name..
Thanks so much for all your help.
Valerie

Sadly, once the military turned it over to the state, and then the state turned it over to the county-interest in the history was lost. The preservation society fights a daily battle to save ANY part of it, and in the here and now, preservation of "Officer's Row" looks to be the only possibilty-and a minute possibility at that. However, it's ALL going to ruin with no maintance and it's heart breaking.

Thank you so so much. I saw that Fort Bayard might be destroyed. Any way that that will not happen? Would the Army having a historical interest in it help prevent he destruction?

It does not help you, but: county records only show his birth date, death date, that he is buried in OK,City and that Cox Mortuary handled the arrangements. State records only give dates, parents names. Odds are good he died of TB,as that was the main function of Ft.Bayard in that time. The Fort Bayard Hospital is slated for demoliton,sadly-another bit of history gone.
I have been told that Bright Funeral Home holds the Cox Mortuary records--you might contact them and see if that is so, in which case those records would have much information.
hbrightfuneral@yahoo.com

I have an ancestor who apparently died t Fort Bayard in 1942. He is not buried in the national cemetery but is buried in Oklahoma City. Is there any way to find out more about him? His name was Harry Francis Green.
Thank you
Valerie Reese
Thank you to the Doctors at Fort Bayard Hospital

Hello my father was a patient in Fort Bayard 1949-1950,

He was honorably discharged from the Navy. Dad contracted TB while stationed in Hawaii during his service.

He was first sent to Tom Green Sanatorium in San Angelo and then transferred to Fort Bayard.

The doctor at Fort Bayard wanted to treat dad's TB by removing half a lung. My dad would not let the dr. do surgery on him.

Dad had dated my mother in 1946. They were still dating when he was sent to Hawaii. While based in Hawaii, Billie my mother went to the Sanatorium in San Angelo, Tx for TB.
Mom spent a year in the Sanatorium getting well. While there, they tried a new drug on her called Streptomycin. Because of the care she received at the Sanatorium and the Streptomycin, mom fully recovered from her tb and is still alive today at the age of 92.

Dad knew about the medication mom had received from the Sanatorium, so he told his doctors at Fort Bayard they were not cutting on him until they at least tried the Streptomycin. The Fort Bayard doctors used the Streptomycin, my dad got well with both lungs fully intact, got out of the hospital, married my mom and the rest as they say is history.

I wish I could thank the Fort Bayard doctor who listened to my dad and gave him the medicine he needed to save his life, I would love to thank him.

Sincerely,

Kathy Mills
Midland,TX
