The members of the Kring family were certainly explorers and pioneers. Nearly all of George Kring, Jr.'s daughters and their husbands left Somerset Co., PA and went west, settling in Ohio, IN, IL, MI, IA, NE, KS, ID, AZ, CA., and NM.

Just this past week I also heard from another lady who also descends from George Kring, Jr's family. They ended up in FL.

Now I'm anxious to get back to doing Kring research.

Sandra Kring Leonard

Sounds great!!!! Hope to hear from your soon. Good luck with your book.

I may be able to find some pictures of the graveyard in San Marcial. It is all that is left for the most part. A number of Darr's are buried there and I think the family still comes out to keep the area tidy.

W Lee Pelton

However, I have a deadline of six weeks to get a book I am writing to the publisher.

I will make a note of things to do in June.

Pedro Telles was born 20 Jan 1864 in Sabinal, New Mexico and about the same time my great grandfather Pedro Torres was born during the same period and place. Pedro Torres' records will continue but Pedro Telles' records are not found. My question, is Pedro Telles and Pedro Torres the same person? My Pedro Torres was actually a Taylor but a captive by Indians, later he was adopted by a Torres family or maybe even by a Telles family also. I would like a look up on death records of the Belen or Sabinal area to check if Pedro Telles died, thank you and take care, Felix Torres Jr.

I do not recognize either of those names, but I am attaching everything I have on Chavez-Van Wagner. Carl

Charles Van Wagner m. Manuella Barelas (8693)

(9770) SAMUEL SANTIAGO VAN WAGNER, b 7/25/1874 Socorro, New Mexico, d 8/12/1960 San Diego, California, m. ca1899 to (MARIA) REBECA CHAVEZ, b 6/12/1883 New Mexico, d 3/4/1971 San Diego, California, daughter of Victor Venceslao and Pueblita Chavez. In 1900c at Socorro, Socorro County, New Mexico, Samuel was age 25, with wife “Maria C”, age 23, enumerated with his grandparents, Marco and Maria Barelas. This census indicated that they had been married for 1 year and had no children. In 1910c at Town of Cuba, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Samuel age 35, protestant minister, Rebecca age 26, with daughters Eunice age 2 and Ruth age 9 months. On 4/9/1911 the Albuquerque Journal reported “Rev. Sam S. Van Wagner defendant in case, alleged to have illegally secured patent to land in Socorro County belonging to another. On complaint of Juan Montoya of Carthage, New Mexico, represented by attorney Elfego Baca of this city, Rev. Sam S. Van Wagner of Cuba, N.M. was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Juan Mondragon of Precinct No. 1 at Bernalillo, Sandoval County, Friday, charged with perjury in the securing of a patent to a United States Homestead. Van Wagner waived preliminary examination and was held to the grand jury in a bond of $2000 which he was unable to furinish at last accounts, being reported still in custody at Bernalillo yesterday. The specific charge against Van Wagner is that on August 4, 1910, he appeared before Notary Public Aaron Eichwald at Cuba and swore falsely in regard to an affidavit in which he at that time by means of said affidavit was seeking to obtain a patent to land in Socorro County. – the article continues and then – Van Wagner has been for some years past, it is said, a minister at Cuba and recently came into prominence in connection with the charges of fraud in the statehood election filed before the house committee on territories.
Van Wagner stated among other things, that he did not consider his life safe in that section, or words to that effect, and made very serious charges against E.A. Miera of Sandoval County and others with equally strong statements as to fraud, illegal liquor selling and other things in the statehood ratification election”. On 9/12/1918 at age 43 he registered with the draft board, residing at Socorro, a Presbyterian Minister at Socorro, and wife Rebecca Chavez Van Wagner. In 1920c she was enumerated as “Rebeca” at Precinct 24, Socorro, New Mexico, age 36, b New Mexico, wife of S. Van Wagner, age 45, a preacher, with children Eunice, Ruth, Ester, Sam, Charles, and Priscilla. On 12/22/1922 the Alburquerque Journal reported that Sam S. Van Wagner of 214 East Cromwell Street, reported that his home had been entered during the preceeding night and a trunk belonging to Miss Victoria Chavez containing school books and clothing was stolen. In 1930c at C Street, Brawley, Imperial County, California, Samuel age 53, church minister, Rebecca age 46, with 5 children. Samuel was a Presbyterian Minister in New Mexico, Arizona, and California. He attended the Presbyterian Theological College of the Southwest at Del Norte, Colorado prior to 1900.
I don't know much about your branch of the tree but get hold of the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center's Herencia publication Volume 18, Issue 2, April 2010. In it Henrietta M. Christmas has an article about the history of the El Rito land grant which was given to given to Joaquin Garcia de Noriega in about 1800. That branch of the tree evidently settled mostly in Santa Cruz and other points north i.e. Rio Arriba.

Thank you so much and by any chance would you happen to know of what decent we are? My mother says Pueblo but I can't find anything that says we ate native American?

Hmmm. Well God bless you for all this wonderful information. It means so much. Did you find all that on ancestry. Com and are there any pictures you know of?

I live in Las Cruces, NM and am familiar with the Estrada family line. I helped a friend create her family tree. Her ancestors were Jose Estrada and Andrea Montoya. If this Jose is your ancestor then here is his family tree created by me:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&d...
You are welcome-happy that something was useful to your search! NM records are VERY hard to find--prior to 1919 there was no formal system of recording births,deaths,marriages--churches yes-public records not so much. And as records become available-be VERY liberal in how you search for spellings!
What I see:
In the 1930 Mesilla census:
Estrada,Jose P.-36;divorced;farmer-grape vineyard
daughter-Elvira-13
daughter-Elisa-5yrs 10m
daughter-Emma-5
son-Danois-2 1/2
Jojola,Agapita-26;divorced;housekeeper

1940 census,Hot Springs (Now Truth or Consequences)Sierra,NM
Estrada,Jose P.-45;building carpenter
wife-Agapita-36
daughter-Elvira-19
daughter-Alica-17
daughter-Mary Emma-14
son-Danois-11
daughter-Euginia-6m
adopted daughter-Mary Jane-8m

There is a death record for a baby son: Jimmy Estrada, born 1937,died Mar.4,1938 in Hot Springs,Sierra,NM
Father Jose Estrada,mother Agapita Jojola.

Jose Estrada's first wife appears to have been Andrea Montoya-they married on Mar.31,1915 in Mesilla. They are in the 1920 Mesilla census with 1 year old daughter Elvira.
It appears that they lost an infant girl-indexed as "Ganoba Astrada", died on Aug.10,1929 in Las Cruces-born 1929 to Jose "Astrada" and Andrea "Montoyo". (This is what I mean about be liberal with spellings)

Unless one was accounted for on a reservation in NM,Native blood is very difficult to determine. Laws of the times regarding intermarriage etc. rather forced people to "hide" it (some of our own did this)None of the records I SEE account for Native blood, but that certainly doesn't mean it wasn't there. You would probably have to go back one or more generations from these folks to find a record of it--not easy.

Dear Janet, Thank you so much for this information. I am just getting started and it is so frustrating when you get stuck. I knew a lot of this information but you also informed me of a lot I did not have. God Bless you and Thank you again. I don't know if I said but I am Agapita Jojola's grandaughter on my mother's side. The only confusing thing is that My grandfather's name is Joe P. Estrada and that was not one of the names you listed that she was married to so I'll have to do some more searching. This stuff is addictive! I can't wait to find pictures. I only have one of Jesus and Simona I found. Would you happen to know if we are native american, and if so what tribe?

If it may help:
It would appear that the family lived their lives in the little farming communities around Dona Ana County:also, there are MANY entries of "public member trees" on ancestry.com for them with various degrees of information and some photos.

1900 census,Santa Theresa,Dona Ana,NM
Jojola,Jesus-born May 1870;married 3yrs;born NM;parents same
wife-Simona-born May 1875;married 3yrs;2 children born,2 living;born TX,parents same; (after this year she is shown to be born in NM)
son-Elias-born Nov.28,1898;1
son-Vicente-born May 10,1900

1910 census,same place
Jesus-42
Simona-36
Elias-11
Bicente-10
Ramon-7
Agapita-5
Mariano-4
Rumaldo-2
Pablita-4m.
{This census states that this is a second marriage for both Jesus and Simona;married 12 years}

1920 census,Colorado,Dona Ana,NM
Jesus-52
Simona-45
Bicente-19
Ramon-17
Agapita-16
Mariano-13
Paulita-9
Octabiano-6
and Jesus's mother,Paulita,age 75 and widowed.
{Paublita Gallegos Jojola,born Oct.4,1838 in Lemitar,NM; died Dec.7,1925 in Rodey,Dona Ana,NM and is buried,according to the death record,
in Rodey Cemetery. I find no listing for her IN that cemetery,so probably means grave is unmarked. Husband Vicente Jojola,father Manuel Gallegos}

1930 census Jesus and Simona are in Mesilla Park,Dona Ana,NM with only son Octaviano at home. In 1940, they are in the same place.

Jesus Jojola died May 11,1943 in Tortugas,Dona Ana,NM;father Vicente Jojola, mother Paulita Gallegos;wife Simona Alderete. Record says buried in Tortugas cemetey. Other people's entry of family trees on ancestry.com give a death date for Simona as 1947;parents Octaviano Alderete and Maria Ramona Gonzales.
Jesus Jojola looks to be in Las Cruces,Dona Ana, NM in the 1870 census,2 months old, parents Vicente age 21, and "Paula" age 19.

There are marriage records in Dona Ana county here:
http://newmexicoalhn.net/
Agapita Jojola and Eluterio Gonzales on April 28,1924
and
Agapita Jojola and Ramon Martinez on July 25,1946

at that same link is a cemetery record w/photo of headstone for:
Agapita Jojola Martinez; born Nov.20,1903,died Feb.19,1963;buried in Tortugas Cemtery,Tortugas,Dona Ana,NM

I will continue to dig around to find out what happened to M F Hawkins, but it would appear that perhaps he passed away around 1880. Who knows.

The story always was that he moved west from Kansas to some place like California and was never heard from again, but maybe it refers to him moving to NM and his family ending up in CA. Or maybe he died in Kansas. Quite the mystery.

Thank you again! I really appreciate it.

It doesn't get you any closer to Mr.Hawkins but:{I tried the available resources for NM deaths and did not find him-however, NM did not have a formal
system of recording vital records prior to 1919--so anything before that is hit and miss}

W.H.Scott married "M.C.Shelidy" on Aug.20,1866 in Neosho,KS;further digging shows that the wife was
Margaret Christine Shelladay.
They had three kids-Edgar,Oliver and William.
{The 1925 IA census asked parents names: William Scott was in Polk Co. in that year, giving his parents as William Scott and Margaret C.Shelladay; Oliver was
in Wright Co.,IA and his parents names given as William Scott and Margaret Kimber}

Margaret Scott married M.F.Hawkins which you know.

Then, Margaret Hawkins married F.F.Kimber (Frederick) on Oct.26,1880 in Labette Co. He died sometime between 1888 and 1900.

I think that Charles Hawkins became Charles Scott--the 1900 census for Liberty,KS shows Margaret Kimber and her daughters-and Charles Scott.
Charles Scott, born July 29,1875 in KS and died on Aug.11,1941 in Chico,Butte,CA
Mother's surname given as "Kimber". That index should show mother's maiden name, but looks like his
wife did not know it? At any rate: Charles Scott married Cora Barrier Jan.22,1908 in Eureka,KS
They had one daughter,Anna Cora Scott, born Sept.27,1909 in KS,died Nov.29,1997 in Butte Co.,CA
She married Earl Pehrson in 1930 in CA.
Charles Scott was in Butte Co.,CA by 1918,when he registered for the WWI draft.
You might try the various look up resources for Butte Co. for obit help:
http://www.cagenweb.com/butte/

Margaret Shelladay Scott Hawkins Kimber remained in Labette Co.,KS until 1910-she had two daughters with
Frederick Kimber-Margaret and Frances. By 1920 she too is in Butte Co.,CA.
She died on Feb.21,1929 in Bellingham,Whatcom,WA. Record found in the records of the WA archives.
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Home
You can contact the WA archives here and request a look up of obituaries--they are pretty speedy too,if one is found!
http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/AskAnArchivist

There are also memorials on findagrave.com for Charles Scott and his wife Cora in Butte Co.,CA-Chico Cemetery; and for Margaret Kimber and her son Edgar Scott, Bayview Cemetery-Bellingham,Whatcom,WA

Just looking to see if anyone has information on a Margaret Scott or her husband M F Hawkins who lived in Parsons, Labette, Kansas. More specifically, Liberty Township where they were married 16 Mar 1874. I have them on a census for 1875, and then after that I have what I believe to be the same M.F. Hawkins in Placita, Bernalillo, New Mexico in 1880, and then again in Precinct 11, Socorro, New Mexico listed with a 16 year old son (C.F. Hawkins) in 1885.

The family story is that M.F. (Michael I believe is what the "M" stands for) moved to Texas from Kansas around 1870, hated it, moved back to Kansas, got married and then eventually headed west and was never heard from again. It was originally believed to be California where he ended up but the Census' are pointing towards New Mexico.

Trying to get a Death date, location or burial site and trying to figure out in general what became of Michael and/or his son.

This to consider with NM records: No formal system of keeping birth, death, marriage records existed before 1919;census records are often terrible;if the census taker did not speak Spanish or was unfamiliar with Spanish names, the spellings of things can be pretty awful-be very liberal with spellings when searching! Letters are "interchangable"-"B" and "V","S" and "Z"--one must figure it out. Ages, number of children etc. will vary census to census, depending on who gave the information to the census taker and how much they knew, and how well the census taker did his or her job--sometimes I think they just didn't care a whole lot about what they wrote down.
That said-I think the family you are searching for is Timoteo and Concepcion Lopez Garcia.
www.familysearch.org has a few databases of NM records;within those records I see a marriage record for:
Timoteo Garcia, son of Gregorio Garcia and Francisca Sanchez, married on Nov.18,1872 at San Ignacio Mission,Monticello,Sierra Co.,NM to Concepcion Lopez daughter of Jose "Lopes" and Juana "Gonsales".

1900 census Socorro Co.,NM
Garcia-Timoteo-born Apr.1850;NM
wife-Concepcion-born June 1854;NM;married 23 yrs;19 children born,5 living
son-Daniel-born Feb.1878
son-Gregorio-born Oct.1886
son-Procopio=born Nov.1890
son-Jesus Maria-born Dec.1893
daughter-Maria-born Mar.1896
mother-Juanita Lopez-born Jan.1840--{one assumes the mother of Concepcion}

Upon further inspection of the 1910,I think it very likely says "Timoteo".

1885 Socorro Co.,census:
Timoteo,Concepcion,Francisca,Daniel,Virginia,Manuela and an "adopted son" named Melquiades age 12.

1880 census Socorro Co. Timoteo,"Consoncion",with children Francisquita age 5 and Daniel age 1.

Also on familysearch, there is a death record for:
Virginia Barreras: born abt.1881,died Feb.12,1929 in McKinley County;wife of Genaro/Jenaro;daughter of Timoteo Garcia and "Consension" Lopez
{In the 1930 census,Concepcion lives in McKinley county with a nephew,and the children of Virginia Barreras are also in the home.}

Daniel Garcia died on Sept.24,1924 apparently in a mining accident: death place given as "Richards Mine,McKinley Co.,NM",father Timoteo-spelled badly-who was born in San Marcial,NM and Concepcion Lopez-spelled badly-born Lemitar,NM. He is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Gallup-(there is also a memorial to him on findagrave.com and Concepcion is listed there as well, having died Nov. 7,1931 in Gallup-parents on death record given as Jose Lopez and Juanita Concepcion Lopez)

I did not find Concepcion in 1920,nor Timoteo; given that Concepcion was living with extended family in 1930, Timoteo almost certainly had died by that year.
There is a database of Socorro county death certificates on familysearch.org ,but they are not indexed nor in order, so it would take some time to go through one by and one and see if he is there.
There are also a few records of christenings of babies of Timoteo and Concepcion on familysearch--but again-be liberal with spellings!

I am looking for parents of Anitio Garcia and children of Anitio and Conception Garcia, who I believe lived in Socorro Co. in 1910. My grandfather, Jesus Maria Garcia, was their youngest (of 12, 5 surviving in 1910). Jesus was 16 as of the 1910 census.
The census record is not very clear, and it suggests that Anitio may have been Doneteo or some variation.
There is no information in the 1910 census about Jesus' siblings (other than the numbers) which makes sense since he was the last and Concepcion was 40 at his birth.
I see that there was a Garcia de Noriega family in the area, so I am interested to see whether we are part of that family what dropped the de Noriega.

In the town of Socorro try the county clerk's office and the LDS family history center, which according to the LDS website is open only a couple of hours each Wednesday. You might stop by the local newspaper and ask what they might have. Most of my research has been on Socorro County was done out of Albuqueque, when I lived there many years back. In Albuqueque you have more LDS family history centers that are open longer, the UNM Zimmerman library, and the NM Genealogical Society, all with extensive records for Socorro County. I can't give further advice without knowing exactly what records your looking for. Good Luck.

Hello! I will be in Socorro county next week and I am trying to find places to go to research genealogy there. I was hoping someone here would know of some locations to try. I am just starting this whole process and I honestly do not know where to begin - I'm a newbie!

If anyone has any leads, I have info up to 1890 census but with out birth, marriage, death cirts its hard to find the maiden names and I want to be able to actually pull records.

Thanks to everyone and anyone that can help me out. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome!

Thank you!

Don't know if you got your info yet. Information that I have is that Antonio Jose was born in 1790 and died in 1860 but I haven't looked for him in the 1850 and 1860 census'. He married Paula Chavez (Duran y Chavez), had 4 children, Jose Maria, Lorenzo (my gggf), Manuel, and Juana. You can find quite a bit of stuff about them in the Cebolleta Land Grant Aragon Papers. State Records and Archives, Santa Fe. Jose Maria and Lorenzo married sisters, Gertrudes and Cecilia Ortega, daughters of Tomas Ortega and Ana Maria Aragon.

I can not find documentation on Benito Chavez's birth, death, or burial place. He was married to Sixta Trujillo. Their children were Adela (my grandmother), Crucita, Aurora, and Delfina. I have Benito's birth between 1842 and 1851. in Polvadera, NM Marriage to Sita 16 Oct 1871 and death between Feb and March at either Las Vegas, NM or Hillsborro, NM
