CSM (Retired) ALFRED (AL) DWAYNE ELDER, age 86, of Las Cruces, New Mexico passed peacefully on October 1, 2017 at his home after a lengthy illness.
Al was born to McDonald and Mary Ophelia Crocker Elder, December 22, 1930 in Seagraves, Texas.
Al joined the US Army in 1952 where he served Honorably before retiring in 1982. During his Military career, he rose to the Honored rank of Command Sargent Major. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts and served duty tours in Japan and Germany. He received numerous Honors and Awards during his military career; most notably the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Joint Services Commendation, Army Commendation Medal 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster and the Good Conduct Medal, Ninth Award.
After retiring from military service, he attended NMSU and worked for the City of Las Cruces until his retirement in 1993.
Al was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Scottish Rite Lodge #1222 of Seagraves, Texas and a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Throughout his life, Al, enjoyed traveling, fishing and spending precious time with family & friends. He was an avid bowler and participated in the New Mexico State Senior Olympics.
Al is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Verneta Faye (Barron) Elder, two children, Cynthia Denise Johnson (Husband, Greg) and Lyntha Darlene Masterson. He also leaves four grandchildren, Justin Johnson, Christopher Masterson, James Masterson & Jacquelyn Masterson as well as four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Getz Funeral Home, 1410 E. Bowman, Las Cruces, NM on Thursday, October 5, 2017, from 5 to 7 pm. With funeral services at Calvary Baptist Church, 1800 S. Locust, Las Cruces, NM 88005, on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 10 am.
Interment with full Military Honors will be held at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, 5200 Fred Wilson, Ft. Bliss, TX 79906 at 10 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 Montana Ave, Las Cruces, NM 88005.
