Marjorie Dee Bender Little, 86, of Las Cruces, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2017, after a short illness. She was born in Milliken, Colorado in 1930 to Clark and Delia Stocking Bender. After graduating from Johnstown, CO in 1948, she received her Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado A&M College at Ft. Collins, CO, a Master of Science degree from Ohio State University, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley, CO.
Her professional career began in 1953 when she accepted the position of Assistant Administrative Dietitian at Weld County Hospital in Greeley, CO, followed by becoming their Chief Dietitian in 1955. In 1957 she accepted a position as a Staff Dietitian at Ellis Hall, a men's dorm at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, CO. A career change took her out of kitchens geared for large quantity cooking into the classroom. In 1969 she began a long career as an English teacher at schools scattered across New Mexico, with the final schools in Las Cruces. She taught at Las Cruces High School for 17 years and added another two at Holy Cross School after her retirement from public education. Always interested in local community affairs, she was active in the GFWC Progress Club, Las Cruces Retired Teachers, and her church, St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Special interests included wildlife preservation, travel and photography.
She was preceded in death by Ralph G. Little who she married in 1955. She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Jay Little of Santa Fe, NM and his wife Viola, and Jerald Clark Little of Las Cruces and his wife Amy. Grandchildren include Amber Sanchez and Jeamy, Shylo and Nicolas Carrera-Little with Great grandchildren Brianna and Abby Sanchez and Xavier Zavala. Other family members include a brother, E. James Bender and his wife Rachel of Boulder, CO, a sister-in-law Phyllis Bender of Denver, CO and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a viewing on Tuesday July 25, 2017 from 4-8 pm at Getz Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at St. Paul's Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 26,2017 at 10:00am with a burial to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
