If you are planning a visit to the Camden County Historical Society anytime soon would you mind looking up the burial place for Dr. George B. Lummis who died in Philadelphia, PA on 12/4/1866.

According to his Philadelphia death certificate he was interred in Newtown (now Haddon, Camden, Collingswood, Audubon, Haddonfield or Pennsauken), New Jersey.

I do not require any document copies just the name and town of the cemetery.

Bob

There are two deeds in Oswego County which, I believe, narrow the locations of these men in a given place and time.

G. William and Abraham Britton "of the township of Chatham County of Morris and state of new Jersey" purchased property on Lot 81 in the military tract, town of Hannibal, Oswego County, New York on 3 January 1820. (Deeds B:348-9, image 515 in images at FamilySearch.org)

On 1 July 1826 Samuel Britton "of the town of Onondaga" [no county or state given, but the grantor was from Pompey, another town in Onondaga County.] purchased land in township no. 24 in the "Scribas patent" in the county of Oswego and State of New York.

Hope this helps someone sorting out Brittons.

Patti Hobbs

The more I think about this I don't think Mary ENGLISH and Mary TURNPAUGH are the same "Mary."

It seems more likely to me that the Mary TURNPAUGH who married the HEPNER could be a daughter of Mathias TURNPAUGH who is on the 1820 census in Warren County, Ohio and his wife who I believe was the Mary TURNPAW mentioned in her father, William SMITH's 1823 Salem County, NJ, will. The time period would fit better and so would the location.

Pretty obvious that the TURNPAWs and the HEPNERs involved here migrated to Ohio from Salem County, NJ at a fairly early date.

Not proof positive but a likely conclusion unless anyone has a better idea.

Joan

It looks as if Matthias TURNPAW was living in Warren County, Ohio in the 1820 census...so he is likely your Mary's father.

I found the following Salem County, NJ, marriages for TURNPAWs:

Simon TURNPAW married Mary English 9 Aug. 1796
Simon TURNPAW married Catharine WRIGHT on 5 Dec. 1800
Susan TURNPAW married John CARMAN on 29 Jan. 1825
Henry TURNPAW married Lalah MINK on 27 Feb. 1800.

A Mary TURNPAW is included in her father, William SMITH's will of 22 Aug 1823.

Hope this helps.

Joan

Cohansey Lutheran Church records (Salem County, NJ) show Mathias HEPNER son of Johann and Anna Maria born July 12, 1791. Perhaps this is your Matthias/Mathias?

The children of Christian THURNBACH and Susanna Catharine GEIGER are listed in the records of Old St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Philadelphia. The Priest from Old St. Joseph's would come to Salem County, NJ, and perform Catholic ceremonies there...this family were members of the NJ Mission. The children are:

Henry born 9 July 1761
Adam and Mary Catharine (twins) born 25 Nov. 1763
Mary Anna born 10 Oct. 1765
Margaret born 16 Dec. 1767
Simon born 6 May 1770
John born 4 Aug. 1772
Elizabeth born 3 Aug. 1775
Mathias born 27 Nov 1778

Mary's father is most likely among the children listed above.

Joan

Since the Salem County Christian THURNBACH would have been born somewhere around 1740ish and since I've seen the Berks County and Lancaster County records for those DORNBACH families -- I'm not finding Christian among those families.

If there is a relationship between Christopher of Baltimore (also found in the York County, PA, records) and Christian THURNBACH of Salem County, NJ, documentation would be needed to prove it.

Joan

Here are some DORNBACH records from PA:
The Rev. Lischy (Reformed minister ordained by the Moravians) baptisms in York County for the two children of Christophel ---he is the same person as Christopher in Baltimore --- same time frame and same wife.

I have not yet found evidence to support that he was born in Lancaster County PA to Johannes as one tree claims...because Johannes immigrated in 1744 and Christophel was born before his arrival in Cocalico Twp. SO...if indeed he is the son of Johannes/John of Lancaster County he was born in Germany and immigrated with his father as a minor who wouldn't appear on the ship records.

I can establish a connection to a Conrad DORNBACH in York County sponsor at one of the baptisms.

Let's say I make the leap and assume that much is accurate (that Johannes is Christophel's father). By the time I add together all the children of Christopher/Christophel in Baltimore and York (obviously one husband and wife Anna Catharina), I don't have space or time to connect them to Christian in Salem County as being the same person. He'd have to have been a bigamist and would have to do an awful lot of traveling back and forth between Baltimore and Salem maintaining two households and having children in both places at the same time.

I see no evidence of connections between the DORNBACHs of Berks County, PA, and Cocalico Twp., Lancaster County and Christopher of Baltimore; to Christian THURNBACH in NJ without seeing additional evidence of a connection. Since Christian and Susanna THURNBACH married in 1760 and the Westerwald book covers the 3 DORNBACHs who immigrated in 1744 and the early Berks and Lancaster County records...and there is no listed connection to Christian in Salem County in any of the Lancaster or Berks records I've looked at.

Joan

The direct line of descent for the Ohio TURNPAWs would appear to be through Christian and Susannah (GEIGER) THURNBACH. The given names: Simon, Matthias, Henry and Adam all originated within the THURNBACH/GEIGER line in NJ. Had Christian THURNBACH been a Proetstant marrying the Catholic Susanna Catharina GEIGER there would have been a notation to that effect in the Catholic records...and there was none indicating Christian was also Catholic.

While I have not studied the THURNBACH origins I have read Annette BURGERT's book on the DORNBACHs, Johann Henrich, Johann Theiss, and Johannes who immigrated to PA on the Aurora in 1744. Nothing in the Westerwald records or those in Bern Twp., Berks Co. PA. prove a connection to Christian THURNBACH in Salem County.

Joan

What are your sources?

Joan

There are two reasons why neither myself nor the other researcher with whom I am working are no longer willing to share our work with you. First, is your intention to make public shared thoughts and findings when it had been made clear to you that we had intended to publish the history of this family and had worked many years in compiling it. The second is a particular tacky email I received when I thoughtfully send you photos I had taken at the Mannington property of Simon Turnpaugh. Rather than simply saying thank you, I received a response that questioned my work. The price to pay for working together with you outweighs what advantages there might be, I regret to say.

Actually, it was a foregone conclusion that the individual on the New Jersey tax list as Christian Turnbock was the father of Henry, Mathias, Simon, and others. As for Christian being the "ancestor of the Ohio TURNPAWs" TURNPAUGHs and TURNBAUGHSs - there are further variant spellings within Henry, Mathias, Simon, AND ADAM's lines, you are completely uninformed and wrong, based on well documented facts. That is where having done the research into this family becomes valuable.

Have you considered that this family was NOT originally Lutheran, the name was NOT THURNBACH and Christian didn't just pop out of nowhere in 1760? From here on, you are on your own. I can't spend my time and energy training someone. Sorry.

My research is academic in nature and I choose not to share my sources and the results of the bulk of my work until I am ready to publish. I still stand behind what I said that you don't know what to look for. Limiting yourself to the Catholic records and the Catholic Historical Society in Philadelphia is your first problem. Your second is not being aware that a child under the age of 16 was more than likely not included in the immigration records of 1744. You say yourself that the marriage occurred in 1760. How old was Christian at that time? No, I am not going to pass on the fruits of years of academic and professional experience, and you are wrong to expect me to do so.

Kate

If you don't know what you are looking for, you won't know the reference to the Catholic Church. Second, you won't know what you are looking for or not finding in the Westerwald records if you don't know the immigration process in 1744. I've noticed that you have done minimal research on this family, and none beyond the marriage record of Christian Thurnbach and Susanna Catherine Kiger. If you have more on this family, please share. If not, there is no basis to "reserve judgment." I am not seeking your approval or validation of my findings. I know what I have in my hands. I know that Johannes settled in Cocalico Township. I have been to the farm, walked the cemetery, met the present owners and the neighbors who care for the cemetery. It's on Furnace Hills Road a little ways off Cocalico. Go past the pond, look for the cornfields and don't miss the driveway.

John, there appear to be several branches of this family having settled in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Baltimore County in the mid 1700's. It appears that they can be traced back to the same family and parish in Germany. I am presently going over the original records which I photographed last weekend, and with a bit of luck, the fruits of my research along with that of another dear cousin will be published next year. I can say that at this point, that I have been able to document the colonial and post-Revolution Baltimore and New Jersey lines of this family and will soon be able to tell their story; not simply names, dates, and places, but how they lived within their communities and where they went to at the close of the Revolution. It is an interesting story and with some unexpected twists. I am very excited to be coming so close to the answers all of the Turnpaugh and Turnpaw cousins have been seeking.
Regards,
Kate Wagner
Great Granddaughter of George Washington Turnpaw
Baltimore, MD

Joan, you aren't aware of the connection because you haven't studied the family, do not know the variant spellings of the last names, nor the history and emigration from Europe. I tried to explain much of this to you. You've focused on the Geiger/Kiger line but have done no work on the Thurnbach line. I am backing up what I claim with many years of research on this family.

Tedious yes, but you might get lucky! Good Luck!

Hi.

Yes, Delaware is certainly possible - I figured if she were hospitalized, Jersey would be the next most likely since James and Bridget McCarthy Martin lived relatively close to Camden (they lived in the gate house of Strawberry Mansion in Fairmount Park). Since Bridget was only 70, I suppose she could have been traveling - she had a sister in Johnstown, PA but that would have shown up in the PA death records. Also, I have what amounts to a written diary of one of that sister's children that would have likely recorded such an event.

It is possible she was further afield visiting a friend or relation. I suppose she could have even been someplace warm as it was mid February. So, I think my next step is to try and investigate as much of the Eastern seaboard as I can, and possibly out a bit West.

There was no hint in her burial record that the body had been transported from out of state but as long as she didn't die of something contagious, there might not be a reason for such a record.

I will find dear Bridget's paper trail! Her genealogy has had a few bumps in the road, so this quandary is icing on her cupcake.

Thanks - any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Joann

I know of no connection to Baltimore, but Simon THURNBACH (later TURNPAW) was born 6 May 1770 and was baptized in Salem County, NJ, by the Priest from Old St. Joseph's RC Church in Philadelphia. He is the son of Christian (not Christopher) THURNBACH and Susanna Catharine GEIGER. Susanna Catharine in the daughter of Matthias GEIGER (this surname later evolved to KIGER in Salem County) and Anna Mary (HALTER) GEIGER who immigrated to Salem County in 1738 from Lembach, Alsace, France. Simon was named for Susanna's maternal grandfather back in Alsace: Simon HALTER, a master glassblower at the Mattshall, Alsace Glasshutte.

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~geiger/webpages/henr...

Joan

William Watson, b NJ 1794, d IL 1874

I am looking for parents’ names and a hometown for William Weldon Watson, born Apr 1, 1794 in New Jersey. One source gives his county of birth as Sussex. He left NJ about 1817 and traveled to Lexington, KY where he married Maria Cape Humrickhouse. They moved to Nashville, TN and had five children: Benjamin, Abigail, Ann Maria, Hester Cape, and Cordelia before the first wife died in 1834. He moved his family to St. Louis and then to Springfield, IL by 1836 where they remained. He later married Sarah Wiley Mottashed in 1842.
The only other clue I have for his family in NJ is relatives in Springfield – a nephew, James LaForest King (son of James and Charity Watson King). So, William may have had a sister named Charity. Another apparent relative in Springfield was Watson King (relationship unknown) also born in NJ.
Some ancestry trees give his father as Samuel Watson, son of Benjamin Watson and Martha Roberts Evans. These trees state this Samuel married Elizabeth Weldon who died in 1794, the year our William was born. But, no sources are given for this info in any of these trees and I have not been able to confirm it. I have found other NJ marriage records for a Samuel Watson in that time period, but none to an Elizabeth Weldon.
Can anyone help?
Thanks, Beth
Help with death record access in Trenton

Hi.

I am wondering if there is anyone who visits the Vital Records office with any regularity who might be willing to check on something for me?

I am trying to determine if the death of a relative took place in NJ - her records cannot be found in PA and I suspect she may have died in New Jersey with burial occurring in PA. There was a six day lag between the death and burial, so a longer transport of the body seems plausible.

I understand that the Archives holds microfilm copies of deaths from 1901-1940. I live in OR, so popping into the office is not an option.

Here are the relevant details:

Deceased:
Bridget Martin (nee McCarthy)
DOD: 21 Feb 1936
Born in Ireland: Sometime around 1865 - give or take...
Address in PA - Strawberry Mansion
Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, PA. (27 Feb 1936)

Husband's name: James Martin

My sincere gratitude to anyone who might be able to help.

Joann Taylor

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

Need - 1st names, race, DOB's and birthplaces in order to search.

Sorry for being so slow to read this. I'm very interested in this article. Do you happen to know the name of the paper it was in or where all of this happened. I wrote the first message while recoving from sever illness and now noticed I made several mistakes in it. Irt just might be possible that tghis Lucas Van Buskirk Sn. could be the father of my Luke Van Buskirk. We have no other information on our Luke and Lucas that we can verify that is why I am so very interested in any information that we may obtain. My cousin's daughter is now taking over this side of our family history. I'm willing to share what I do have descending down from Luke and Elizabeth (Maxwell) Van Buskirk. Beth

Here's the article on Naomi Riker.

I can't find any death info on her -- It's POSSIBLE that she's still alive, at age 100!
