Re: I will lookup Warren County Marriages 1824-1855

The book and page numbers you provided indicate that these are STATE marriage records (which began in 1848) that you found on the New Jersey Archives web site. I do not have access to the State records. You need to contact the State Archives for copies of these records. Or you can engage an independent researcher or RAOGK person to get them for you in Trenton. Or you can order microfilm through LDS. For your information, some marriage records for the 1848-1878 period have parents' names, but many do not. The later the record, the more likely it is to have parents' names.

The records I have indexed are COUNTY records. Starting in 1795 (or whenever the county was founded), marriages were recorded by the County Clerk in Marriage books. In 1848 the State took over marriage recording, however many counties continued to record what was reported to them. So after 1848, the record may be recorded by the State, the County, both, or neither.

I checked the NJ Archives site and see that the records you requested are all listed there. The only one that was also recorded in Warren County book is the one for John F. Hughes.

John F. Hughes of Harmony to Elmira Hixon of Greenwich on 2 Sept 1851 by Rev. Skinner. Warren County Marriage Book 1 page 311.

The records I indexed/transcribed contain ALL the information listed in the marriage book and the original marriage slips. Typical information for county records includes only couple's names, towns, date, and official. Occasionally there is more info.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Sharon Meeker

I have a great uncle that was named Jesse Jennings Scott, son of John Calvin Scott and Margrett G. McDuffie. John was born 1864 MS and died in Yell, AR. I have wondered why they named a son Jesse Jennings Scott and when I saw your post I thought we might have the same Scott ancestors. My John Calvin Scott's parents were John Scott b. 1824 AL and Virginia Wait b. 1830-1836 SC. They lived in Pontotoc, MS in 1860. John b. 1824 had a possible brother named Benjamin born about 1814 KY that might be the one you are looking for. This Benjamin married Eliza Campbell in Fayette, TN in the 1830's. They moved to St. Francis Co, AR after that and Benjamin disappeared after the 1850 census. Hope to hear from you. Thanks, Iris

Robert Baumle Meyner Ancestry

Robert Baumle Meyner’s mother Maria Sophia Bäumle was born in Birsfelden, Canton Basel-Land, Switzerland, where her parents Robert Bäumle and Franziska Oliva Thüring lived for a while and for a job. A couple of years ago I received a letter from local authorities in Birsfelden which says that Robert Bäumle of Harpolingen, Baden, Germany and his wife Franziska Oliva Thüring didn't became Swiss. They still where of German nationality when they moved to America in the 1880's. The births of their children which where born in Birsfelden, Switzerland was recorded there, but also in Harpolingen, Baden (their original hometown). Thus far this letter is the proof that Robert Bäumle and family where "Bürger" of Harpolingen, Baden and German when they emigrated to America. All other official and non-official sources, which say they were of Swiss origin are in error.
Andreas in Baden (1/2 Bäumle with roots in Harpolingen)
I think you are right about coroner's signature.

I now live in KY, but used to live in Warren Co. Hackettstown Hist. Soc. used to be pretty accomodating when it came to a quick search like what you need. You might even be able to call them and get them to look while you are on the phone.

You can also see if you can get a phone # for Phillipsburg Cemetery. I don't know what their protocol is. You can try calling them and just ask for the section #/location for the graves for John and also for his wife. That might be a way of confirming location. Also, if you want to ask someone to take a photo of the gravestone, it would help a lot to have the grave #.

Good luck. Let me know if you think there is anything else I can do.

Sharon

Phillipsburg Cemetery is on Filmore St.

Hackettstown Historical Society has books for this cemetery. You could ask them to check for your names. They also have a huge card index, which I think indexes names in many/most cemeteries.

I have the NJ death cert dated 03.01.1898 for the brother of my great grandmother. His name is John F. (Franklin) Palsgrove. (The last name is often misspelled Polsgrove or Paulsgrove.) The certificate is written with a scratchy dip pen, and I am unable to discern its name. I have checked various sites listing Warren County cemeteries and Findagrave, and I cannot seem to make a match. The cert states the place of burial is Phillipsburg. It appears the cemetery name (at least in 1898) started with a "K" and consists of two words. It looks to me something along the lines of "Kravy" or "Krany" Cor. or Cor. But then again what I see as a "y" may just be a stray pen stroke. The first word that I think begins with a "K" appears as though there was some trouble spelling it because some letters look written over on the copy.

The name of the funeral home appears to be P ? Hagerty.

Does anybody from the area know what this name may be?

(I think his religion was the German Reformed Church.)

Hello Rick:

I see that you live in Ocean County. Probably your best bet is to go to the State Archives in Trenton yourself. If you cannot do this, you may be able to get what you want by mail from a professional genealogist who works at the NJ Archives.

You can order the original inventory from the NJ Archives by mail:

See under Wills and Estate Inventories here:

http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/reference.html

All you need is the name, county and year to order the file.

HOWEVER, what the Archives will send you is the original inventory, a cover page or two and that is it. After the individual county (Hunterdon in this case) was finished with the original inventory or will, THOSE PAPERS ONLY were sent to Trenton. This is what the Archives will send you.

BUT, WAIT! THERE'S MORE ...

The county created much more paperwork on each estate. A log or book record was kept of every action on the estate. This may be just a mention of the appointment of an adminstrator (possibly his wife or maybe a male relative of hers), or there may be much, much more. In the case of a man who died with a wife and young children (as I assume you believe is the case with this Richard Dilley), there may be an appointment of a guardian for the children. Children may be named. If he owned real estate, there was some plan for what would happen to it. The court may have ordered it sold or divided. There may be deeds associated with these transactions. It's hard to tell exactly what there is; every estate was different. A hand-copied inventory for the estate was also kept in the County record books. So ALL the information related to the estate is available from County records, in one way or another.

If the estate was handled by Hunterdon County Orphan's Court or there was a division of the real estate, the estate will probably be abstracted in the following book:

Somerset and Hunterdon Counties, New Jersey : heirs to estates : abstracted from partitions and divisions, 1809-1904
Author: Virginia Alleman Brown
Publisher: Lambertville, N.J. : V.A. Brown, 1986.

This is a paperback book. Your county library or historical society may have it. It may give you a outline and references for what is available on the Dilley estate in County records. NJ Archives Room and/or State Library certainly have it.

Whether or not you find information on the estate in Virginia Brown's book, you will still want to investigate the Hunterdon County files. There are several places you or your hired researcher can do this.

1. The Hunterdon County Surrogate's Office in Flemington. The last time I was there, they didn't let you see the original books anymore, just photocopied books. So there is no particular advantage to going there. Plus, they used to charge pretty stiff fees for photocopies.

2. The Hunterdon County Historical Society in Flemington. I know they have microfilm of the original inventories. You would have to check with them about what Surrogate's records they have on microfilm. This is the place for Hunterdon County research. They have card indexes to many manuscript items, family files, Bible records, etc. kept in back rooms. The place is very organized, and they have an immense amount of material, but their hours are limited.

3. NJ Archives in Trenton. In addition to the original inventories and will mentioned above, the NJ Archives has (more or less) microfilm of all COUNTY records up to about 1900. The Archives staff will not search these records for you; you have to do it yourself or have a paid researcher do it.

This is probably the best place to go. There is one or more file cabinets for each county's records. Each county has a list of records that are on microfilm. There used to be guide books on top of the cabinets, but someone can probably point you in the right direction. Start with Surrogate's records. Look for an estate index. The first page or inside cover of the microfilmed book will explain how the name index works. If you run into trouble, ask the Archives staff for help. There are lots of different indexing systems -- some more sensible than others. That index will give you books and pages for all the related estate transactions. (i.e. LA1 - 173 - Letters of Administration, Book 1, page 173) You can then find those records on microfilm and print pages from them.

If you want a copy of the original inventory too, you can have the Archives staff make you a copy. It should be a lot less than $10.

Of course, the Archives also has birth, marriage and death records for the whole state from 1848 to about 1940 and lots of other goodies.

If you really like hands-on research, you may want to go to the County Clerk's Office in Flemington someday. It's been several years since I've been there and they may have moved some stuff, so you might want to check with them. The County Clerk's office has deeds, mortgages, maps and mostly land-related transactions. If Richard Dilley owned land, tthe records would be here. The County Clerk's office is (or at least was) located next door to the Historic Courthouse where Hauptmann was tried.

In the basement of the County Clerk's Office, there is a treasure trove of information. Much of it indexed on 3x5 cards. After I saw this room (which I don't think many people even know exists), I was thoroughly convinced that Hunterdon County has not thrown out a single piece of paper since the formation of the county in 1714.

There is always the possibility that "the vault" will provide you with some information that you could not have found anywhere else.

Well, that's the short course on NJ County estate records. If there is anything else I can do for you (from 800 miles away), let me know. If you need a list of possible researchers, I can email one to you.

Boy, I just wish I was close enough to tear into those records myself for you!

Have a great Thanksgiving.

Sharon Meeker
(formerly NJ, now KY)

sharonmeeker@bellsouth.net

I checked Warren Marriages 1824-1855 for Job Johnson, Richard Dilly/ey and Sarah Farlee/ey. There were no entries of any of these names.

I also checked Somerset Marriages and Hunterdon Marriages, both of which date back to 1795. None of these people were listed.

Since Warren was set off from Sussex in 1825, I suggest you also post on the Sussex board. A marriage before 1825 (presumably Sarah's first to Dilley) might be found in Sussex Co.

You might also consider Northhampton County, PA as a possible marriage location.

In my search I found a Richard Dilly in Knowlton Township (then Sussex Co, now Warren Co.) in 1773/4 tax list.

I also note that there was an inventory in 1830 for a Richard Dilley in Hunterdon County. The date looks possible to be your man. If you do not already have this record, I can tell you how to get it.

I wish I could have turned up more for you. Unfortunately, I no longer live in Warren County, NJ and have very few sources available to me here.

Sharon Meeker

I have been raised with the last name Herr. It is of great urgency I find out who I am because I went to do a family tree and when I asked my family why I couldn't find me they got extremely upset abd started calling me crazy etc...I have now came to TX where im staying at my deceased future father in law Connie Ray Mcclures home. As i've been here I have found so many interesting things that have my name on them things similar to your picture so im hoping im going in the right direction.

I checked all Sellers/Sollars and all Cyphers/Sifers, etc. No marriage between these two names was found in any year. I also checked Hunterdon County. No such marriage in any year. I looked at index online for church records for Northhampton County (Easton), Pennsylvania. This is an index only, but I did not find a likely entry.

I found about 8 Cyphers marriages in Warren County. Most of these people were from Oxford Township.

I suggest you post on the Sussex County, NJ board for someone to check Sussex marriages. Also try Northhampton County PA board.

Good luck in your search.

Sharon Meeker

I have prepared a full indexed record of Warren County Marriages Book 1. The information in the Marriage Book was cross-checked with the original marriage slips turned in by the minister/JP. I will look up by groom or bride and provide all the info in the record. I will also provide the page number in the original book. This book has been microfilmed and is available at NJ State Archives in Trenton, and LDS Family History Centers. I believe that I have captured all the information from the record, but if you wish to view the microfilmed original, you will have the reference you need to find the record.

The usual information includes bride and groom names, their town or township, date of marriage and the name of the person who performed marriage (minister or JP). A few records have additional information such as where the marriage took place, names of witnesses. If one party was underage, the name of the father or other male relative may be given.

If the marriage you need was performed between 1848 and 1855, you should also check NJ state marriage records which are indexed here:

https://wwwnet1.state.nj.us/DOS/Admin/ArchivesDBPortal/Marri...

Please limit your requests to a reasonable number of names.

Sharon Meeker

Re: John West and Elizabeth Casly? I guess she is the one who died 28 December 1885, buried at Moravian in Hope. Her age was listed as 68 years, but I looked at the photo of the stone and it looks more like 88 to me. That would make her born c. 1797. This same woman was age 63 apparently next door to John and Rebecca West in 1860 and also next door to Henry Nulton and Barbary (b. 1801) West. If this is the woman you want you can get her death certificate.

http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/databases.html

I could not read gravestone for John. Don't know what church might have on burial records or what they might tell you. You can try Warren County Historical Society in Belvidere. They have a good collection. Don't know now if there is anyone who would be willing to search records for you.

Be sure to check this site.

There is good info here and compiler has WEST ancestors, apparently including John and Rebecca.

Sharon

Sharon,

A miscellaneous question. I have been researching some Ohio ancestors from the mid 19th century and the following names comes up- Welcome, Pleasant, and Francis. I feel without knowing why that Pleasant would be a man and Welcome a woman, and Francis spelled that way is masculine and that Frances is feminine. In your opinion, am I right about Welcome and Pleasant?

I have not located any more marriage records, but have found better dates for some of your couples.

John C. West b. c. 1822, Maria b. c. 1828. marr c. 1842, both buried at Green Chapel Cemetery in Knowlton. (find-a-grave)
Thomas West 1790-1845 and Mary Vankirk 1800-1876 also buried at Green Chapel. Probably would have married before 1825. Check Sussex Co.

Joseph West (b. c. 1817) and Rachel (b. c. 1825) Not sure from census, but might have been married as early as 1838, but in any case by 1850.

John West and Elizabeth Casly? Don't know. Need better date estimates.

Nathan Cooke b. c. 1808 and Barbara West (died 21 June 1847 age 29, b. c. 1819). Buried at Marksboro. This is right on Sussex Co. line, so try there. prob marr in 1830's.

Check out the links that I gave to Neil on this same thread for more info on these families. The one site has Warren Co. newpapers, births, cemeteries etc.

Also check out Easton Library site I mentioned to him for church records/marriages. These couples might have married in Pennsylvania.

If you have any more info on any of these couples, I'll see what else I can do.

Sharon Meeker
Oh and I should have said I looked at the New Jersey site and found a civil birth record for Susan Ludwig, daughter of Jacob Ludwig and Ester (though the name was spelled LUDIING) on 13 July 1849. There were no other children listed for Jacob or Esther after that. I hope I didnt miss any. They must have moved back to Northampton after that and maybe some were born there but I dont think they kept civil records. yes, and too bad there was no Jacob to be found in the 1860 census. Oh well, maybe they were out for a walk when the census taker came.

Neil

Hi Neil:

Here is the web site for the Marx Room, Easton Library. Note online indexes.

http://www.eastonpl.org/MarxRoom.htm

Here is link for Warren Co. Library Local History. I found an entry for obit for Mrs. Ludwig in 1855. Don't know if this is connected to your family.

http://www.warrenlib.com/warrenlib/local_history/localhome.h...

You can get a copy of this by requesting it (and perhaps sending SASE and/or $1.00 or 2.00 donation.)

I checked my Warren Co. marriages book. No Lud* or Lod* tha might be Ludwig/Lodwick, etc.

Found the following records online. I imagine you have all of this, but just in case --

1870 Lafayette Ludwig in Harmony Township, Warren Co.
1880 "" "" in Allen Township, Northhampton Co.
1890 "" "" "" "" veterans census. Served in 90th PA Inf. Co. G
Find-a-grave, Greenwood Cemetery, Howertown, PA graves for Lafayette and his wife (with her maiden name). Lafayette: 13 March 1840 - 26 May 1896. Includes picture of gravestone.

I have been to that cemetery several times. Very nice and quiet.

I also tried to find Lafayette in 1860, so far without success. Since he joined PA CW unit in 1862, he was probably living on PA side then, but even that is not certain.

Lots of families moved back and forth across the Delaware River. Easton was a big town compared with what was nearby in NJ.

Although I used to live in Warren Co., I moved to KY a few years ago. So I remember some of the sources etc., but no longer have hands-on access.

Remember that if you are looking for anything in Warren Co. before 1825, it was part of Sussex Co.

If there is anything else you think I can help you with (long-distance!), let me know.

Sharon Meeker
KY

A second e mail will answer your questions more fully. No, Im not from Warren or Easton but Little Rock, Arkansas. And the only marriages that probalby took place in Warren Co would be the oldest children of Jacob and Ester named William born 1835 and Anna Mariah born 1839. If the family stayed in Warren Co long after the 1850 census they could have been married between 1855 and 1859.

Thanks again,

Neil

Thank you so much. The family crossed the border every now and then and Im interested in the years 1841 to 1858 in Warren County. They were in Plainfield, Northampton County which was thie county or origin and home base and they are listed there in the 1840 census and in Knowlton, Warren Co, NJ for the 1850 census. I have not been able to find them in the 1860 census. The family was LUDWIG and the head was Jacob and wife Esther, both born in Pennsylvania in 1808 and 1809 respectively. Your site did have the birth of their youngest daughter Susan in Knowlton July 13, 1849, for which I thank you. She was only listed as as 0 years in the 1850 census. Lol

The speeling of such a common name is alwasy different. The parents were listed as Ludiing in the birth of daughter Susan and in the 1850 census Ludewig and Ludwich in 1840 census. Maybe under the 1860 he has a spelling permutation that I havent used. groan.....

As I said Im mainly interested in the births of any more children for Jacob and Sether LUDWIG in Knowlton in the 1850's and finding his whereabouts and that of his son(my ancestor) Lafayette in 1860.

Thanks again for the info. Ill take time now to go thourgh it more thoroughly.

Neil
