I have published a novel about Abraham Clark. It is very thorough, and follows his life and his family throughout the Revolutionary War. The title is A FOUNDER FOR ALL, by Barb Baltrinic. It is available on Amazon. I am already writing a second book about his son, Andrew.

If you read the novel, I would love to hear your reaction, or have you post a review on Amazon. Thank you!

I'm not aware of any obituaries that Ancestry has for NJ for that period. I checked Genealogy Bank and they don't seem to have anything for Union County for that time frame either.

I don't know of any death indexes online for NJ after about 1900. Perhaps someone more familiar with Union Co resources could suggest whether there is a library that might have obit indexes and would be able to help you out.

Or perhaps some local volunteer could help.

Other than that, the only solution I see is to slog through a couple of major Union Co. newspapers for the period, probably on microfilm at a local library or at the NJ Archives or NJ State Library.

Generally speaking, there really isn't very much online for NJ after the 1940 census -- up until obits from perhaps the last 10 years that you might find for certain areas or funeral homes, or indexed on Obituary Daily Times.

Your profile doesn't indicate whether or not you live in NJ.

Sharon

Helen died last month just short of her 100th birthday. You may not see this because you were looking so long ago, but if you do, I would love to talk with you.
The New Jersey Archives in Trenton has death records on microfilm up to 1955. Henry would have been 91 in 1955 and Ella 87 so there is a good chance you will find them.

The marriage license for Alexander Annen/Annin and Ellen Burns stated they were both residents of Rahway, NJ. They married in Elizabeth, Essex Co NY on 11 Aug 1846. I cannot place him in any Annen/Annin family. He died 1 April, 1854 in NYC (not to be confused with another Alexander Annin who d there on 31 March, 1854 age 55).

The Green-Wood Cemetery records in Brooklyn, NY show Alexander Annin was age 35 yrs, 2 mo, and 9 days which would make his birth date be 23 Jan 1819.

Alexander Annin and Ellen Burns had 2 sons: Alexander B Annin b 1847 NJ and Cornelius Annin b 1850 St Louis MO.
Cornelius apparently died young. Alexander B. stated that after his father died, he and his mother resided in NJ and NY until he was 18, that she then took him to live with relatives in Illinois.

There are many listings for men named Alexander Annen in early NJ records. Perhaps one was his father or grandfather. I do not have any idea where to research next to find the name of his parents. DO YOU ?
Regards, Bettye

I am in Minnesota. What a difference in the availability of records by state. I am truly spoiled here. I have a death date on their son, Arthur, and have written to a library in New Jersey to see if they can provide an obituary on the son. Hopefully that may give me funeral home, burial, etc. Hopefully.....hopefully....

Unfortunately, there is no quick and dirty method for finding death dates during the period you mention. NJ Archives now has deaths on microfilm up to 1946, I believe. So start there first. If you can find one of them during that period, you will find the cemetery where he/she is buried. Also, get an obit which should give you more info. For that matter, death certificates and/or obits for any children, siblings, etc. which you probably already have, should give you a cemetery name. Contacting the cemetery may give you the information you need on the Battens.

Your member profile does not indicate where you live. If you are not in NJ, you may need to engage someone in NJ to find the information you need. A Union County researcher should be able to check probate files, deeds, local obit and cemetery indexes for you. (I checked the Union County Probate Index on FamilySearch. It goes up to 1949 only and there is no Batten listed between 1940 and 1949.)

Good luck with your search.
Thanks for the reply but "been there...done that". Been doing this for over 30 years. They are not on Find A Grave. They are not on Family Search, Ancestry, etc. I have all of their census records. I included the maiden name so as to identify the correct Mrs. Arthur Batten.

I am looking for information on how to find documentation in Union County, New Jersey. I find New Jersey very protective of their records.
I am trying to find any families who may be connected to my 4xGr-grandmother Anna MAXWELL (maiden name unknown) who was born in 1772-1775 and who died in Plainfield, NJ in July 1866, age 94. I do not know her husband's name.
In the 1830 Census Anna MAXWELL is between 50-60 years old, living in Westfield, NJ with one unnamed male between 20-30 years of age.
In the 1850 Census she is living with some of her children in Plainfield.
Her daughter was Elsie MAXWELL (born c. 1801 - died Nov. 26, 1880 in Plainfield NJ).
Elsie Maxwell was married to Alex HAMMEAL. Their children are:
William HAMMEAL (born c. 1830) who married Bridget TULLY
Clarkson HAMMEAL (born c. 1837) who married Jane SCHENCK
Mary Jane HAMMEAL (born c. 1821) who married Jacob HOAGLAND.

William HAMMEAL later lived in Brooklyn, NY and I am descended from that line.

The name HAMMEAL later became, in some instances, HAMMELL, HAMMEL, etc.
The first name CLARKSON was carried through several generations and I am wondering if it could be a family name, so there could be a connection to a CLARKSON family.
I have come across several possibilities but nothing that connects definitely with any other MAXWELL family.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks. -PJ
Dear Teach456,

I don't know if you'll see this since this thread was started a few years ago, but I'm very interested in the topic of Thomas Mitchell.

Our stories are somewhat similar. My grandfather, William Mitchell (no middle name) was born in Bellshill Lanarkshire Scotland. His father, who was of Scottish-Irish descent was also named Thomas Mitchell, and the story goes that he was named after his uncle, the actor Thomas Mitchell.

My grandfather never really talked much about his family history, and we don't have a lot of hard evidence about his lineage, but in the last few years of his life, we were all watching Gone With The Wind, and when Gerald O'Hara came on screen, my grandfather immediately told the story of how we were related to him. He also told of how he and his family went to see him while he was in a show on broadway, and he and his family went backstage to meet him. My grandfather was very young at the time to remember all the details.

You said in your post that he looks like the Mitchells. That is the case with my family is. Thomas Mitchell (the actor), bares such an unmistakeable family resemblance to my my great grandfather - the other Thomas Mitchell. So, who knows, we might be related.

I thinks this thread is awesome. Its really the first decent amount of information that I've been able to find about Thomas Mitchell's background. Thank you for sharing your information. Please take care and God Bless.

I am searching for a tombstone, cemetery record, obituary or any other form of death record for William H Pett, born 24 Dec 1854 in England. He married Lois B Drysdale on 26 Oct 1878. He died in 1938 in Union, NJ, although he and his wife lived across the river in New York near Greenwich Village for more than 20 years. Lois B Pett died in 1946, possibly in Leonia, NJ. Any information on either death record would be greatly appreciated.

The Public Library in Elizabeth has the Daily Journal on microfilm from the 1700's to the 1990's. They will search them for a fee.

See: http://www.elizpl.org/home.html

Bob

I am a great-grand-son of Philip Kreis. My grandfather Frederick E. Kreiss added the second "s" to his name during the first world war. I have a copy of his book and have spent considerable time, and some money trying to confirm his story. It is likely a fabrication. His wife was denighed a pension.
He had only two grandsons with the Kreis/Kreiss surname. I'm the last great-grandson, and have no male children. Being 79, I'm not expecting any more. His male line will end here.
Please feel free to reply.
