Oliver - Maybe Daniel - Sussex County, New Jersey

Hi,
I'm looking for information about the husband of Sarah Mann; she was born Oct. 1768 in Philadelphia, daughter of Ernest and Mary Mann of Oxford Twp, Sussex, NJ. Sarah is listed in her father's will, written in 1804, as Sary Oliver. The will was proved in 1813 after Ernest died. In 1826 there was a petition to the Warren County Orphan's Court by Daniel Oliver, an heir-at-law of Sarah, listing other heirs-at-law as John Oliver, Mary Oliver Cleaver (wife of Nathaniel Cleaver), and Peter Oliver, a minor under 20 years old. It would appear from this document that both parents are gone at this point (1826). We don't know when Sarah died, and we don't know but suspect her husband's name was also Daniel. There was a Daniel Oliver in the 1793 tax list of Oxford Twp. and a Daniel Oliver who served in the Pennsylvania Insurrection in 1794 (found in the Records of officers and Men of NJ in wars from 1791-1815).

Does anybody have any information about a Daniel Oliver or any other Oliver from Oxford or surrounding townships in Sussex County? I would appreciate any feedback or leads.

thanks,
Mary Ann

Knowing the origins of names, I would venture that it is a Scandinavian Name. The name in the US is mostly used as a Surname. She may have been named that after a relative with the last name of Inza. There is an alternate spelling of Enza. I might also suggest a possibility that it could be misspelled Inza in place of Inga. Don't know whether you've explored that or not. Just a suggestion.

William Watson, b NJ 1794, d IL 1874

I am looking for parents’ names and a hometown for William Weldon Watson, born Apr 1, 1794 in New Jersey. One source gives his county of birth as Sussex. He left NJ about 1817 and traveled to Lexington, KY where he married Maria Cape Humrickhouse. They moved to Nashville, TN and had five children: Benjamin, Abigail, Ann Maria, Hester Cape, and Cordelia before the first wife died in 1834. He moved his family to St. Louis and then to Springfield, IL by 1836 where they remained. He later married Sarah Wiley Mottashed in 1842.
The only other clue I have for his family in NJ is relatives in Springfield – a nephew, James LaForest King (son of James and Charity Watson King). So, William may have had a sister named Charity. Another apparent relative in Springfield was Watson King (relationship unknown) also born in NJ.
Some ancestry trees give his father as Samuel Watson, son of Benjamin Watson and Martha Roberts Evans. These trees state this Samuel married Elizabeth Weldon who died in 1794, the year our William was born. But, no sources are given for this info in any of these trees and I have not been able to confirm it. I have found other NJ marriage records for a Samuel Watson in that time period, but none to an Elizabeth Weldon.
Can anyone help?
Thanks, Beth
Very glad I could help. It just so happens that the 3 sources that I provided links to are FREE. (New York Times articles are free up to 1922.)

FamilySearch is a great free resource. I think you'll find more on your Ogdens there.

If you do not have a paid membership to Ancestry, you may still be able to use it at your local library for free. And from occasionally Ancestry has free databases for a specific period of time.

Good luck with your search.

Sharon

Sharon,

I thank you so much for answering my inquiry so quickly! I also got your message. I posted my question here because I did a Google search for Ogden, and this came up. I didn't know they had this broken down into counties, and so forth. I will be more careful about that in the future.

I am grateful for the links you supplied! I am doing this for my son's homeschool, and I cannot afford to pay to access all the birth certificates I would need. It is great for me that places like this exist. I am now doing a genealogy on Mary Ogden, and enjoying all the history immensely. Your reply prompted this in a way, so I thank you for that, too!

Family trees, compiled genealogies, and other "lists" etc. are often wrong. Your best bet is to concentrate on contemporary sources: census records, births, marriages, deaths, etc., etc.

I started with the marriage record for Charles Francis Adams and Mary Ogden. Index entry is here:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F8VL-P1W

Her father is E. and her mother is C. The marriage took place in Newport, Rhode Island. I would get the actual marriage record, as there may be more information. Note that her name is just given as Mary, not Mary Elizabeth on this record.

Here is the New York Times announcement for their marriage. Her father was listed as Edward.

http://www.nytimes.com/1865/11/16/news/married.html

Edward and Caroline are buried in Newport.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=og...;

They both died in France in 1872. Edward applied for a passport in 1869, which you will find on Ancestry. His gravestone notes that he was born in New York City.

I located Edward and his family in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana in 1850. There is no "Mary" listed, but there is a Minnie, age 7. (c. 1843).

Good luck with your search.

Sharon

PS: Don't take birth dates too seriously. The day/month may be right, but the year wrong. And of course, women got younger as they got older -- just as they do now.

I am finding so much conflicting information on this wife of Charles Francis Adams. I am wondering if anyone here knows what is correct about her. Just this morning, I saw her listed as Mary Elizabeth Ogden, born February 23, 1843, daughter of Abram Ogden of New York and his wife Caroline Callender. Caroline was the daughter of Thomas Callender and Anna Maria Smith, who were American Descendants of Royalty, as also was Charles Francis Adams. Then I saw her listed as Mary Elizabeth Ogden, same birth date, daughter of Edward Ogden of Rhode Island and his wife Caroline Callender (descended from Magna Charta ancestors, along with Charles Francis Adams). This book did not have the page with Caroline's parents. Yesterday, I saw listed as descendants of John Witherspoon Thomas Callender and Anna Maria Smith, parents of William N. Callender, who married Genevieve Anthon, with no mention of Caroline Callender, mother of Mary Elizabeth, as his sister. I have also seen Mary Elizabeth Ogden's birth date listed as February 23, 1845.

I knew my grandmother as Susie but one of her daughters was named Anna,so that might have been her name also. She never learned to speak English. She died in 1969. They had 2 sons Joseph and Martin. Joseph changed his last name during WWII. I would be interested in any info you have. Thanks for info. Look at my tree and you can see what I have found so far.

Hi,

If you still need a project, I have family, Crawford, who lived in Montague Sussex Co. right after the revolution. The family owned a few Sussex properties. The Delaware bridge property, a house on the dam property across from the old schoolhouse. In-laws were Cole, Westbrook, Depue, Sly and Dennis. There are recorded events in the Dutch Reformed Church, a will in 1815 Sussex Co, land deeds at the court house. They are not recorded in any history books written about Sussex Co. Relatives lived nearby in Orange Co. NY, (Port Jervis) and Milford, Pike,PA.

Ed

Kithcart in Sussex or Morris County NJ

I have a Charlotte Kithcart who married Charles Lewis Trowbridge in Randolph, Morris County, NJ on 2/18/1854. The Francis Bacon Trowbridge genealogy book shows her parents as Joseph Kithcart and Mary ________.

The only Charlotte Kithcart I can find in NJ around that time is the daughter of Jesse and Hannah in Sussex County, but it looks like she married a James Groover. I see their marriage in 1852, then the birth of their twins in 1853, but nothing about them after that.

Does anyone know anything about another Charlotte Kithcart in that area? Or perhaps Charlotte's marriage to James Groover didn't last and she then married Charles Trowbridge.

Her marriage record shows her being from Morris County, but I only see one household of Kithcarts in Morris County, a young couple.

Thanks for anything you can tell me!
Of all the Dalrymples who emigrated to America one family is unique in its DNA - and that is the Dalrymple family in New Jersey in the 18th Century. All other Dalrymples in America are DNA related to some degree but not us ! Our Dalrymple family emigrated from the Townland of Dunamore in Northern Ireland between 1684 and 1737 to New Jersey. The Dalrymple's of Stair were active legally - and as land owners in New Jersey also from 1684 to 1747 through their attorney ! We are searching for male Dalrymples in America as well as in Scotland and Northern Ireland for free Y-DNA testing in order to promote research on our Dalrymple / Walker families of New Jersey. Also looking for the related Walker family who went to Loudoun Co., VA before 1757. Please respond to: DalrympleWalkerDNAResearch@yahoo.com
George B. Lummis was listed in the Catalog of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1855/6.

There was a Newtown in Gloucester County, NJ at one time. There were Lummis families who lived in Gloucester County in the mid-1800's. Salem and Cumberland also had Lummis families.

This area is a lot closer to Philly than Newton in Sussex County, so you might want to check out NJ counties that border Philadelphia.

Sharon

Anyone ever run across the surname Lummis or Loomis in Sussex County?

I am trying to track down the grave of Dr. George B. Lummis/Loomis who died 12/4/1866 in Philadelphia, PA. He was supposed to have been buried in Newtown or possibly Newton, NJ.

He was born ~1828 in New Jersey.

OK. I understand. Looks like they were married about 1901. There are no marriage records online for this date as far as I know. The only suggestion I can make is that this record can be gotten from the NJ Archives. However, they will not answer mail requests for any record after 1900. So you will have to engage someone to get the record for you from the Archives. You may want to put together a "wish list" for vital records from the Archives. That might make hiring someone more cost effective.

Sharon
