Greenwich!

Township in Sussex County in 1765. Now in Warren County.

The original "Grinnige" Township was huge, encompassing a substantial portion of what is now Warren County.

Prior to 1753, all of what is now Sussex and Warren County was part of Morris County. Greenwich Township was part of Morris County when it was formed in 1738. Prior to that the area was in Hunterdon Co. Prior to 1714 it was in Burlington Co. So keep all this in mind when looking for your family.

Sharon Meeker
Do you just happen to have any information on the Maxwell family that moved from Morris Co. to Sussex Co. sometime in the late 1700's. Capt. John Maxwell married Eunice Osborn. One of their daughters was Elizabeth Maxwell who married Luke Van Buskirk. Luke Van Buskirk and Elizabeth Maxwell had a daughter Eunice Phebe who married Horace S. Cooper somewhere in N. J. @ 1825 time frame. This line migrated to La Grange Co., Ind. The basic source of our information came from the book "The First Settlers of Passaic Valley" by John Littell. Does the book mentions any information on these family lines?

Thank you very much for your time and effort.

Beth

Good afternoon Laurae,

Here is what I found in the book:

1. Ezekiel Dennis, of Sussex County, bought 182 acres of land from Elizabeth Sharpe on March 20, 1775

2. Samuel Dennis, Jr. owned the Pepo-Cotton lands, near Roy's Station on the PP&B Railroad. [The PP&B Railroad appears to be the Pennsylvania, Poughkeepsie and Boston Railroad]

Good luck with your research!

Randy
Webster, Texas

Good afternoon Margaret,

Here is what I found in the book:

1. Johannis Westphael, baptised June 21, 1711, married Apollonia Kortrecht

2. Margaret Decker married Hendrick Hendrickson Kortrecht. [No date was given but likely this would have been in the mid-1700s]

3. John (or Jan) Cortright was one of the six settlers of the old Minisink village. The Cortright name was derived from the low Dutch word Kort (short) and recht (right). He erected a stone house about one mile below the "present" Montague Church in which his son, Hendrick, lived. During the Revolutionary War Hendrick Kortrecht kept hotel there. It had been "recently" torn down. The descendants of his family are very numerous in Sussex

4. On January 30, 1772, Johannes Cortrecht, along with five other surveyors of highways, met at the house of Peter Decker to lay out a road

5. Jan Cortright owned at least one lot of land on Big Minisink Island, which was surveyed in April, 1725

6. Hendrick Johnson Cartright was a Captain in the Minisink Miltia in 1789

Hope this is useful. Good luck with your research!

Randy
Webster, Texas

Ok, I'm searching for any information on the Leepers of Sussex county going back to the civil war. My great grandfather's father & mother, (how's that, ha) were William Leeper b 1798? & Elizabeth Dickson, born & died in Warwick, Ny. They had 13 children, one of whom was Samuel W Leeper, b 1834, Vernon, Sussex, died 1918 Boonton NJ & is buried in Fairview Cemetary, Hamburg, Sussex, NJ. I wish I could find out if there is an actual gravestone for him there, perhaps with his first wife's name. He had 4 sons, only found 3 with first wife, then married Jeannette Scott & had a son Fred Martin & a daughter, Bessie. Fred is my grandfather. ANYHOW, what I would REALLY like to find out is more information on the civil war records of Samuel & his brothers, Robert, John & Daniel who also went to war with him. & what has happened to all the descendents since then. They joined the civil war out of Warwick, NY, that much I know. I guess they went back & forth between NJ & Ny. please email me rdwlfswmn@aol.com if you find out anything. thank you so much!
Aelfwyn,

I was at the Morristown Library today in the North New Jersey Genealogy Ctr. They have a big fat file on Day but I can't find a connection with your Hamburg/Hardyston/Paradise Days. Can I ask you, what proof do you have that Jehiel Day married Sarah Perry? I know there is a Family Tree on Ancesty that shows that, but it is unsourced. I know also that it looks as if they are married on the 1850 Census. However, that year census did not specify relationships to the Head of the Household and you cannot be sure that they were married. They could be a widower and widow living together, for one thing. I found a letter from someone written in 1983 that said Sarah Perry was married to JOHN Day, both born in Stockholm (another place very near to those I mentioned above). She cited no source...but just wondering.
Please e-mail me at Wolawol@gmail.com.

Valerie
I am working on a couple of other peoples' families right now and the holidays are coming up. However, if you tell me specifically what you are looking to find, I can do some side research when I am at the right facilities. I can look for deeds from 1810 and marriages from 1790. I also see that the Sussex county Historical Society has a "flat file" on the name Perry. They are only open two mornings a week but I may possibly be able to go next Friday and see what they have. Not making any promises until January, though, as I am going away for a week at Christmas!

Valerie

Valerie

Hi! If you are still in need of practice, I'd be most grateful for family info (particularly anything beyond simple birth and death dates). Most of the basics have been posted online here in Ancestry for the descendents of Jehile (Jehiel) P DAY born about 1798 and married Sarah PERRY on 7 Aug 1815 in Sussex. She was also born about 1798. While a group of us have pieced together the bare facts on their descendents, we have no real clues on the familes either of these ancestors came from. If you are interested, I'd be happy to answer any questions I can to help in your research. Many thanks from Maine!
Aelfwyn

Hi,

If you still need a project, I have family who lived in Sussex Co. right after the revolution, a soldier in the revolution captured at Ft Washington, the family owned a few Sussex properties, some famous, the first Delaware bridge property?, a possible existing house on the defunct dam property?. In-laws were Cole, Westbrook, Depue, Sly and Dennis. There are recorded events in the Dutch Reformed Church, a will in 1815 Sussex Co, land deeds at the court house. Not recorded in any history written about Sussex Co. Family lived nearby in Orange Co and Bucks Co. Port Jervis and Milford. In later years some family moved to Michigan territory, Iowa (territory?), Nebraska (territory?), Oregon (territory?) Missing much. We live in Missouri via NJ.

Let me know Ed foredsemaiL123@yahoo.com

My gggg-grandfather, Samuel Mattix, lived in Sussex County. He left a Will dated July 14, 1807 which was proved in Sussex County on September 28, 1807. He names each of his children in his Will. His wife's name was Mary, last name unknown but, perhaps, Schouwers. After Samuel's death, his children and widow went to Butler County, Ohio. Samuel's father's name was, allegedly, Giles Mattix who came from Holland - I have no proof of this. I would be most grateful for a report on Samuel and his ancestors, siblings (if any), etc. The surname "Mattix" is found spelled in many different ways.

I live in Illinois, and it would be difficult for me to get to New Jersey to do my own research. Your help would be most appreciated, and I would enjoy working with you.

Bob Barr
barrbob@comcast.net

We are lucky that there aren’t more than 2 Andrew J Conklin’s and I have no idea what the J stands for in either case, but Andrew Jackson was a common name then. It is pretty obvious from the censuses that we are talking about 2 different families

This is Elias and Martha in Stillwater. (Note the name is Conkelton in these early censuses and Conklin in the later ones.) I am actually thinking that Andrew may not have survived infancy because he is not in any census.

1860 > NEW JERSEY > SUSSEX > STILLWATER TWP
Series: M653 Roll: 709 Page: 279
67 73 CONKELTON, Elias 25 m Farm laborer
Metilda M. 27 f
Elias J. 3 m
Chancis A. 2 m
Margaret O. 3/12f 50
-------------------------
1870 > NEW JERSEY > SUSSEX > STILLWATER TWP
Series: M593 Roll: 889 Page: 207
CONKLETON ELIAS 36 M W NJ NJ SUSSEX STILLWATER TWP 1870
Martha 37 keeping house
Series: M593 Roll: 889 Page: 208
CONKLETON CHAUNCEY 12 M W NJ NJ SUSSEX STILLWATER TWP 1870
Margaret 10
Sarah E. 8
Emma D. 4
John W. 1
-------------------------------
1880

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
Elias CONELETON Self M Male W 46 NJ Laborer NJ NJ
Matilda CONELETON Wife M Female W 48 NJ Keeping House NJ NJ
Delphina CONELETON Dau S Female W 14 NJ At School NJ NJ
Lillie A.
So there were 2 Andrew J Conklins both born about 1858?

I am guessing one was Andrew Jackson. I think the other was Andrew John going by the 1920 Census.

1920 United States Federal Census
Home in 1920: East Main St., Sussex, Sussex, New Jersey
Image: 1045
Household Members: Name Age
John Conklin 64 head
Clarette Conklin 57 wife
Clarette Conklin 11 grandaughter
Rottelwin R Gunderman 73 step father

I am throwing this out because now I am lost as to who is who!

I am saying that the Margaret Conklin who married Jacob Talmadge is not the daughter of Elias and Martha. She, and the other Conklins listed as brother and sister in law, are the children of Samuel Conklin.
