I see that Justice of the Peace marriages 1773-1828 have been put into book form by Sharon Meeker ("Sussex County, New Jersey marriages from justice-of-the-peace dockets, 1773-1828"). Was that the end of J.P. marriages in Sussex, or did they continue? What agency has the original records, an index, or a transcription?
I'm researching a couple who were married by a Sussex J.P., John McCarter, Esq., in June 1829: Andrew B. Casterline and Eliza Mains. McCarter was a Justice of the Peace in Sparta, but during an unknown time period; after that (by 1830) he moved to Morris County and became Assistant County Clerk of Morris. Could he have performed a marriage ceremony even after leaving the Sussex J.P. post? It wouldn't fly nowadays, but back then? I'm trying to figure out where he might have performed the marriage: Sussex or Morris; and thus where to look for the record.
The State Archives and local Sussex churches have no record of their marriage, births, or deaths. A Sussex Register item in June 1829 reports their marriage, by the said John McCarter, Esq., but says nothing more. Other sources have identified McCarter, as a onetime J.P. in Sparta, but provide no dates, but in 1830 he was living in Washington Twp, Morris County, far away from any Sussex office.
