I am searching for the parents of Cornelis Powelson(Pouwelson, Pauluszen) who is listed as an early settler of Somerset Co., near Pluckamin, before 1700. He was on the list as being Dutch from Long Island. He married Jannetje Andries, daughter of Andries Juriaens and Annetje Praa (Prat), 11 October, 1696 in Flatbush, Kings Co., NY. They had a son Johannes born about 1719 near Somerville, NJ, who married Horemptje Messaler. Any info on these families would be appreciated.

I have much info on decendants of Johannes Powelson and his wife, Haremptje Messelar, should you be interested in them. I have no info on parents of Cornelius, Johannes's father, and am grateful for finding the info that you provided in your posted message. I am in the eighth generation of direct descendants from Johannes. Most of my research concerns descendants who lived and died in and around Bedminster Twp., Somerset County, NJ.

Cornelius Powelson possible parentage

I'm descended from Cornelius's son Powel, came across the following:

Somerset County Historical Quarterly Vol I
The Sarah Powelson ancestry is clearly enough stated by Mr. John A. Powelson, of Pluckemin, in an article in the work on "The Van Doorn Family," p. 718. She was the daughter of Johannes Powelson and Harmpje Messler, first of near Harlingen, and then of near Pluckemin. Johannes was the son of Jacob Hendrick Powelson, first of Long Island and then of Somerset County. Jacob's father was, doubtless, a Hendrick, whose father was believed to be Nicholas, the emigrant, who arrived in 1657 from Ditmarsen, Holland. Of the Clarkson family we have no information. The Messler (originally Metzelaer) family descends from Jan Adamsen Metzelaer, of Worms, Germany, born in 1626, and the descent to Harmpje is fully traced on pp. 624 and 674 of "Joannes Nevius and His Descendants,"

Nicholas Powelson came to New Amsterdam from Ditmarsen, Holland, on the ship "Gilded Otter" in 1657. Presumed to have had a son Hendrick, whose son Jacob Hendrickse came to Somerset Co., settling probably near Harlingen. His son Johannes, of Harlingen, b. 1719, m. Harmptje Messler and settled near Pluckemin in 1767; left a large number of descendants, some of whom spell the surname Poulison, Poulson, Powlison, etc.

I have a Rebecca Powelson born 1706 in Sommerville, Somerset County, NJ. She married Johannes Van Meter / Metre. I believe her father was a Hendrick Powelson / Poulson. I am wondering how this connects into your tree. I am very interested in information on Rebecca's mother.
Thanks,
Samuel
