I remember my grandfather talking about his homestead in NJ. He used to skate on the canal to school in the winter. He attended Griggstown Dutch Reformed Church.
His name was Frederic Earle Staats. His father was Frederic Staats. Any infomation about the family would be appreciated. If I am not mistakened Griggstown is in Somerset

My father also skated on the canal and also attends the Griggstown Dutch Reformed church in Somerset county. I will ask him if he knew your grandfather. (The Staats family has lived in the area for a long time.)

,just read your 1999 query on the Somerset Co. N.J. group of Staats. I imagine by now that you have made some progress. I am from the Staats of early Long Island who finally got down to Dalaware, and ultimately to W.Va. but I did reaearch on the Dr. Abraham Staats Who settled in Albany, N.Y. and his descendants. They are the ones who swttled in N.J. I will be glad to share with you, if you haven't come up with them by now. I am sure that they were related in Holland. I live in San Antonio, Tx. Betty,

I am researching the CONINE/CONYN family of NY and NJ. I have reason to believe that some of my CONINE ancestors may have went from NY to NJ and DE. I see where your STAATS family went to DE, wondered if you knew what county in DE they went to? I think I've seen a connection with CONINE and STAATS, don't think it's my direct line, but this Delaware thing has caught my attention, since I have strong reasons to believe my direct line went to DE from NJ.

Would appreciate any help.

CONINE/CONYN may be the same as Connick which is King, My ancestors were Abraham Staat and Anna King. Here is some of what I have:
Anna KING (1755-1811) married Abraham STAATS (1750-1826). This information is from the OLD tombstones.

Abe and Anna are buried in the STAATS Sayre cemetery in Evans, Jackson Co. WV...Previously Mason County,VA.

According to an interview with their grandson, George W. STAATS. (Abraham, Elijah) Abe and Anna were from Delaware. He also said they went to Dutch Station, in Western Ohio in 1797 before they came to present day Jackson Coo, WV about 1799. Dutch Station is in present day Staunton near Troy, Ohio.

There are a number of documents which place them in Harrison county, VA (now WV) prior to that.

Anna's KING family MAY BE (NOT PROVEN) the same as the DECONNINCK (sp?) or DEKONIG family of Delaware. There is a book on this family, but, alas, Anna is missing from it.

Actually Brittain and George W. CONINE were brothers, not father and son. I have lots of information on these families, would love to share. Brittain and George W. were two of thirteen brothers and sisters and I have researched all of them.
