Can any one tell me where the Saums\Danberry Farm Cemetery would be located. I have Sourland,Somerset county. Cannot find Sourland on map. Also does this cemetary still exist?? My GGgrandfather,Richard Garmo, was buried there in 1897.

The Saums Cemetery is located off of Zion Road in Hillsborough. It is deep in the woods and very difficult to find. I am a Social Worker who does community service projects with kids and we started cleaning the Saums Cemetery this past fall. I hope to have it cleaned up by summer depending on the weather. It is located in the Sourland Mountains but is very secluded and overgrown. Unless you are shown exactly where it is you would probably never find it. Email me at ADuncan282@aol.com and I'll give you more info and if you would ever like to go out there I will take you. Allan P. Duncan

The transcriptions are on file at the Hillsborough Library and were printed in a newspaper, but it doesn't state WHICH paper, just the date (May 22, 1936). From the newspaper clipping:

" OLD CEMETERIES
-------
Saums Cemetery
Old Danberry Farm
(now Fontana) Sour-
land Mountain, Som-
erset County
-------
Copied by
Warren Patten Coon
(...several transcriptions in alphabetical order)
Garmo, Richard--"Co. A., 35 Regt.,

1897; wf. Ann VanLieu, d. 2.17.1900,
ae. 78 yrs."

Hope this helps!

On the north side of Zion-Wertsville Road just east of where it intersects with Spring Hill Road (near the crook in the road). I have NOT had an easy time with MapQuest since they made changes to their site, but any map of the streets should make life easy for you. Shouldn't be too far off the road, but I haven't physically visited it yet.

I'm putting the transcriptions up on my site over the next week or two... there aren't many--just busy. You'll be able to get to them through www.jonesgenes.com or by going to the cemetery page at www.rootsweb.com/~njsomers

Thanks again Heather. Allan Duncan said it is pretty hard to find. Way out in the woods. He is working on a cleanup of that cemetary. Now part of the Sourlands Mountain Preserve.

Roberta! Just saw your e-mail query re. the Saums/Danberry Cemetary. My ancestors are the Danberrys who lived there, and my Grandmother's sister, Cora, who died in 1908 at age 17, is buried there. My sister, cousin and I have visited it about four times in the last few years, but it is not easy to find. It is back off Zion and Long Hill Road, and our access in was from Zion Road. I use a stand of pines as the marker once you get into the wooded area. My Great, Great Grandfather, Theodore Gray, is also buried there, along with many other families from the late 1700's to the early 1900's, It is on the west end of the Somerset County Park, and I talked to the head ranger at one point about restoring it, but she said that it may well be vandalized if its presence became common knowledge. The wilderness was certainly taking over when we last viewed it, so hopefully it is being restored. We'll have to visit it again this spring. We did take some photos of some of the old headstones. If I can be of any more help, let me know at jeannieg@ptd.net. Jeannie Geremia P.S. I'm on my daughter-in-law's site now (Sunny).

There's a program for kids in Somerset Co. where they clean up old cemeteries. None of them have been disturbed or vandalized afterward--which is odd given that it's kids MAKING trouble that are cleaning up the cemetery.

I can ask him if he's still running this program. They've done EXCELLENT work.

Jeannie and Heather, I am very interested in getting a list of the names of the people buried there. My GGgrandfather and GGgrandmother are both there I think. Ricard and Anne (Van Liew) Garmo.
My sister and I were both there last august. It is very hard to find and very overgrown.Hank Smith Sr. from the Somerset Historical Society took us there. We could only find about 5 headstones visible. None that we related to.
Alan Duncan used to run a program to take kids out there to fix it up. He had back surgery last spring I believe and could not help us at the time.
Hank said that he had a list of the people there but I have not heard back from him.
Would love to hear from both of you. Write me at robertapastor@msn.com.
