Hi Val,
I tried to email you, but I don't have your current email address.

Christiana Keen married Robert Kitts on 13 Apr 1794 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Gloucester Co. It will show up on ancestry.com in the "Pennsylvania, Church and Town Records, 1708-1985" if you search for "Christiana Keen" or "Robert Kitts"

-andrea

16 Feb 1792 . Robert Kitts, Innkeeper of UPN to Andrew Boon, Shallopman of Philadelphia, PA.
Whereas Robert Harbeson sold one acre to Kitts on Oldmans Creek recorded 7 Mar 1786 plus another parcel of land and swamp which Kitts was well assured? by law ( may have bought at Sheriff's sale or perhaps just unrecorded?), 9 July 1787 for L500 gold and silver.
1. Land and swamp, beginning at a corner of lot #7, along same N53*W 5 chains to a stone. Then S37*W 2 chains to a stone. Then S53*E 5 chains to a lane or Street. Containing 33 acres, 1 rood and 9 perches, more or less. Witness Wm. Miller and Jacob Wright. signed Robert Kitts.

Hi Bill,

Sorry, just found this today as I circled back to this particular couple again. My email had changed in the interim, and I guess my attempt to update to the new one didn't work.

I found a Robert Kitts deed yesterday in the Salem county clerk's records, so trying to refresh my own notes, make sure I have it straight myself.

I think Robert Kitts was married three times. But I am trying to look at each piece of the puzzle and make sure everything fits.

Easier to start with Christiana. She married Jonas Keen February 15, 1763. You are correct, they were listed in the Swedish church register as having children from late that same year until 1782.
Jonas d. abt 1791, when Christiana was granted administration of his estate.

The Simpkins/Keen marriage record you see above, confirms her married again to Robert Kitts before 1797, when her daughter with Jonas Keen, Margret Keen, was getting married. Although I have yet to find a record of Christiana's marriage to Kitts, right now I date it between 1791 (death of Jonas Keen) and 1797.

When you look at the church register on Robert Kitts, it is directly stated he had children by his deceased first wife and in his will he names Matilda as his daughter by Mary Gibson. If he was legally married to Gibson or not, I don't know, but I've listed her as the 2nd wife and Christiana Vanneman Keen as his third.

Because the church register had a Mary Lounsbury b. 12 Oct 1757 living with Robert when it was taken, some think she may have been the same as the Mary Gibson he mentioned in his will. I don't have anything proves or disproves that theory.

It would really help to find his marriages, where ever they took place.

"Officers Chosen by the Court" as published in the last section of H. Stanley Craig's, "Salem County Genealogical Data, Vol. II". These names for the most part NOT in the book's index:
.
1775: Constables: LPN Robert Kitts, Joseph Cobner - UPN John Somerlin, William Strimple

That job would probably explain why later he was an innkeeper. I'm told getting a tavern License sort of perk reserved for those who had military service. But it places him in LPN at that time of his life. Though Keen and Vanneman I think were in UPN, hence his holding a tavern and hooking up with her in late life.

Hope this clarifies it for you, that the children of Robert Kitts were not by his last wife. Still don't know who first wife was, but working on it.

Robert Kitts left a will, and died about April of 1799, Christiana died about a year after him and also made a will. Neither of them mention any children between them. Hers are all Keens, his are Kitts. Though Robert does leave something to his wife's dau, Margert Keen, see? Honestly, just judging by her years of marriage and children with Keen, I wouldn't expect them to.

If you haven't seen, here's an abstract of Robert's will:

1796, April 11. Kitts, Robert of Upper Penns Neck, Salem Co., Innkeeper, will of.
Wife Christiana £100 in lieu of her dower; also all silver and household goods she brought to me; and her daughter, Margaret Keen, to have same should wife predecease me.
Grandsons Job and John Kitts (son of son John) each £30, when 21. To my daughter Martilla Kitts (daughter of Mary Gibson) £50. Daughter Ann (wife of Paul Jequatt), plantation in Pilesgrove bought of John Alman. To said Martilla Kitts (daughter of Mary Gibson) house and lot where I now live called the Tavern at Boon Cove from Delaware River up to Halten's line, together with 5 acres of woodland beginning at William Dickey's line and bounding on Catherine Helms' land. Son, Felix, remainder of the said Boon plantation whereon he now lives. To daughter Drucilla (wife of John Fenton) lot of land joining lands late Robert Herbeson's at Wrightstown which I purchased of Doctor McKee.
Residue to be divided between my children aforesaid, i.e, Ann Jequatt, Drucilla Fenton, Felix Kitts, and Martilla Kitts (daughter of Mary Gibson). Executors--son Felix and son-in-law, Paul Jequatt. Witnesses--Artis Seagraves, Charles Holton, Thomas Gibson.

1796, July 6. Codicil. Wife, Christiana to have room next to Delaware and 1/2 of garden. Property left daughter, Martilidia [sic](daughter of Mary Gibson) , to be divided among other children should said daughter die without issue. Witnesses--Artis Seagraves, Thomas Gibson, Thomas Peterson.

Proved April 30, 1799 Lib. 38, p. 398

1799, April 13. Inventory £1158.2.0; made by Thomas Peterson and Moses Wright.
File 2323Q

By Wrightstown he means Auburn. Specifically the lower end and out to the cemetery that still stands. Boon Cove I think would be what we now call Helms Cove, lower part of Pennsgrove, but both UPN in his lifetime. vnc
Hope that clears up your question.

Val

I am looking for information on my gggg grandfather's family. His name was Mathew W. Allen born about 1792 in New Jersey. He married Margaret Wick in Salem County, NJ in 1813. I am looking for information on his parents or any siblings. All of Mathew and Margaret's children were born in Salem County, NJ before the family moved west btwn 1830 and 1840. In 1830, he lived in Pittsgrove, Salem County, NJ next door to a John Allen born in 1797 and two doors down from a Samuel Allen born in 1799. All three were carpenters. Wondering if they were brothers. Any help would be appreciated.
If you get the chance, stop by SCHS and check their death index file. All those based on a scrap book of obits, might find one for her.

The smaller churches couldn't support their own preacher always, so usually shared with another one, or several when the circuit riders were still going. So you could check Sharptown records in the historical society too. My mom's people all were members at Haines Neck, but I found their marriages on the books of Sharptown, and it was probably because they shared a minister at the time.

Auburn's records have been 'lost' by a minister who took them when I was a kid. But I found some of the marriages through familysearch. Sometimes show up under Atlantic county because someone didn't know Sculltown was in Salem county, confused it with Scullville. The name was changed around the time of the Civil war, so they couldn't find it on a map.
OK, now the answers to the questions;
Location
1850-UPN post office Penns Grove
1860-UPN
1870-UPN
1880-Lower PN
1895 NJ Census Lower PN (with other Whitesells. Related?)
Religion would most likely be Methodist, Emily (my gggm) his daughter was married in Emmanuel M.E. Church in Penns Grove I have the wedding certificate. Also Garrett V. SR. born 1818, is buried in that churchs cemetery. The church in Haines Neck and Emmanuel in Penns Grove where somehow associated at one time, I don't think they are now though. Perhaps a traveling minister? Not quite sure. The wedding to Elizabeth Pedrick is in H. Stanley Craigs,CD of Salem Cty.
I have not checked the Salem County Clerks office yet, I have to go over and let Andy Coldren copy some of my Civil War pics of the 12th NJ this week or next maybe I will stop by when I'm over there. Thanks for the pointers.
Perry

The last names are Bishops, and they are Nellie Harris Bishop and Emily Summerill Bishop, my grandmothers sisters. They lived just down the road from your ancestors on the farm right down the road from Haines Neck Methodist Church. Several of them are buried in the front row of the cemetery. Some of my Englishs are buried there along with Whitesells, its a real family affair! If you would like I'll try and forward the pic?
Perry

I don't have an answer so will ask you a few questions to consider. I just saw Garret and Elizabeth on the 1850 census for Upper Pennsneck.

So here are my questions. First is location? I can't say for certain exactly where in UPN they were located from the several pages I scanned. I recognize many of the names on those pages, but doesn't mean much unless you know enough to pin someone directly on the map. Many farmers were tenants when they were young, and might switch to another location each 'moving day', March 1st. And many found it tedious to travel too far to church, might make do with whatever was closest.

Next would be religion. Are you aware of any particular association or burial ground this branch might have used? I ask because I know many folks here in Auburn that followed the Baptist, so show up in Daretown Baptist records. There was a meeting house here for occasional use, but that was still the 'mother' church. Quaker meeting house in Pedricktown was laid down long time ago, but you'd see many of the members in the Pilesgrove (Woodstown) records.

And with a name like Garret V...which I would immediately associate with the Vannemans, could have had a strong affiliation with the Moravian, though earlier Swedish, and later the Methodists. Though you won't find records for all of the early churches, sort of hit or miss. Not always a minister full time, had to depend on supply. And not all ministers reliably sent in their returns, once it was made law to do so. I've read that many felt they owned their record books, took them where ever they went.

Most times it is the bride's home township where the law requires the application for license be made these days. Makes me wonder if it was so back then? Even if they just went to a JP.

Once in a while you'll see locals were married out of state, maybe because of family there or a favored minister or flat out elopement. So you can't rule out Delaware or Philadelphia. Or the ever popular Elkton, Maryland (no waiting).

Pedricks may have originated in Pedricktown, but they were all over the place by this time. The only Butlers in my own files were originally from Salem, later in Woodstown. Though I know of some had a farm on Perkintown Rd in UPN when I was a kid.

Which leads me to ask, where have you already looked? This might boil down to a process of elimination. Always the last place we look, eh? Your best bet, if you haven't already, would be to check with the Salem county clerk's office, see if they have on file. Cover more bases that way. Also the state archives in case they took out a license.

Good luck, let us know if you find them.

Val

Thank you for saying Perry. Glad to be back.

Can you tell me more about the children in the photo? Any names? Haines Neck is sort of ground zero for some of my family, many buried in the churchyard there. Though I was told the earlier generations attended Cranbury school in Mannington, so part of my confusion.

Despite that, three townships converge at Course's Landing (today just south of the blinker on Rt. 40). So not much of a stretch to imagine some going in either direction, depending how close they lived or what route they could take to get there.

Hi, I know this clue comes very late, but unfortunately I was out of the game due to long illness.

I found in my files an index card for the obituary for a Joseph Sharper, published in the Pennsgrove Record July 12, 1934.

Sharper, (colored) Joseph 68 years of Upper Pennsneck Twp. d. July 9, 1934. Lived on 25 acres farm at WRIGHT's school house site, which he inherited from his father, Elisha Sharper. Survived by son, Oswald. Died instantly when hit by a car driven by Bert Mace.

Cannot tell you where I got this now, even the font used on the card I copied a bit unusual. However, with that publication date and some tax maps, should be able to locate the property in modern terms.

I apologize for the false lead in my previous entry on this topic. Long term Lymes that effected my ability to concentrate, I confused the Cranberry school which was in Mannington, with this one.

Not sure you will see this Perry, but hope that the record now stands corrected.

Val

Dear Board,
I am sorry if I posted my info on the wrong county, but the earlier messages seem to imply that Silas of Livingston Co. Mo. was the Silas Jr. of Cumberland Co. NJ and a grand son of William Smith and Abigail Davenport who was in turn a son of Abner who is the subject on this thread... whew..

I am trying to find a connection to Joseph Smith b. 5/14/1794 New Jersey d. 11/16/1875 Pettis County Missouri and married to Catherine Raines probably in North Carolina ca 1832. It would be a huge clue if I could find their marriage record!

Anyway, I appreciate any response and apologize for posting on the wrong county.

Sincerely,
Vic Piper

I have a Silas Smith who was born either on 7 Jul 1801 or simply 1801. He married Salina McCoskrie in 1853 when he was 52 years old. Could he be the same Silas who married Ruhama in 1835 and died the same year?

An interesting story about him is recorded in a newspaper of the time: He was buried in McCoskrie Cemetery, Livingston, Missouri. He owned the grist mill at Dawn ( a town) which he sold on June 23, 1866. Later that day he was murdered and robbed by an unidentified group of men. No suspects were ever brought to trial."

Janice
Garrett V. Whitesell (b Feb 9 1818)seems to have married twice. Once to an Elizabeth Butler, and once to an Elizabeth Pedrick on 10/18/1866. Does anyone know where I can find the marriage and the death date of the first Elizabeth? I believe it to be between 1860 and 1870 by viewing the Fed. Census for those years and the date of the second marrige being 1866. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Perry

Hi Don,
If you are looking for the arrival of James into the (what is now) US, you need to check the two major port cities. Philadelphia and then secondarily New York. It is also possible that he came through Baltimore. It is most likely Philadelphia.

I believe that some of the manifests are transcribed and indexed on Ancestry.com. Here's an example of one of manifests on Ancestry's other site: http://www.progenealogists.com/palproject/pa/1764boston.htm At least two of the people on that list came to Salem county.

Good luck!
-andrea

The pencil marks are just scribbles, not letters, and it is a newspaper. There is part of an ad for men's suits on the back.

Hi again. If that clipping has not been retouched and the paper is actually white, then it is not from a newspaper. Newspaper yellows and turns brittle from the acid inside it. I have seen pictures from a similar time period on white paper like that today, but they were taken from local history books. If that is the case here, there should only be a handful of titles and the Salem Historical Society should have them in their collection.

-andrea

I searched the Bridgeton Evening News for that phrase on genealogy bank. No hits, but it looks like it could be from a Salem County paper. I also noticed some pencil writing on left margin toward the top on the side. Are they stray marks or are they letters?

good luck!
-andrea

I found a newspaper clipping in a family bible. It shows a picture of a man with the caption "A Successful Upper Pittsgrove Farmer". There is no date or any accompanying article.
The surnames from the bible include Frazer, Groff, Hutchinson and Ecrett, but I don't know if he is even related to this family.
Can anyone identify the man in the picture?

I am also descended from Isaac and Mary Luthultz. I have Mary's name as Mary Pauline Minnick born in VA in 1805. I am also descended from the Neff and Eliz..... connection. I had Elizabeth originally but later changed to Eliza. I don't remember the details but convinced myself at the time. There are a lot of Minnicks, Minnichs, Muenchs in Rockingham County Virginia and also some Luthultz but I haven't been able to make the connection yet. I suspect that Mary is possibly a descendant of Mathias Minnick, born in PA in 1779. I also suspect that Luthultz is a corruption of Lutholtz.

However I do have some data on this SMITH family that I found when I was researching in Warren County years ago.
John, I found a death notice for Nancy Smith McIntire from the newspaper in Warrren county Ohio. It states that her parents were James and Jane Smith. I beleive that Jane was Jane Ireland. James' father, James was married to Nancy Paxton. These 4 people are buried in the Hopkinsville cemetery in Warren couty, Ohio.
Does this fit with your family?
Cathy

Just found out my Jeremiah was born in Donegal, Ireland for sure--so that means his parents Stephen and Hannah had to go over there, he was born over there, and they came back here..A friend who is more experienced in genealogy told me the family was back and forth--so I am checking with her to find out where she is getting this info...it is very confusing and I am not that good at genealogy yet, I find conflicting reports that send me this way and that.Elaine
